Nobody's going to have a problem discerning the games, because nobody thinks Street Fighter and Tekken play the same.

Gameplay clips 3, 4 & 5 make me hope that Nintendo has forced a control fix by allowing nunchuck support. Why constantly flip the controller around when I can just hold it that way the entire time?

Because if you're holding it like you would with the nunchuk, you could very easily just happen to point at the screen which would stick you in first-person when you didn't want to be.

As for third-parties, they aren't going to favour the 3DS over Wii any more than they favour the current DS over Wii.

Because there are a lot of Resident Evil games on the DS. Or, you know, any of the other major games that third parties have announced for the 3DS.

Also platypus.

Don't forget platypus.

I wouldn't say that. After all, it's only people "like us" who even know what Noir or 2099 are. ;-)

Average fans do not.

Average fans of what? Of the movies? Because your "average" Spider-Man comic book fan sure as hell knows 2099 at the very least.

After all, nothing says "skills" like memorizing a string of button combinations.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: The Future of RPGs on Nintendo Consoles
« on: July 20, 2010, 10:15:59 PM »
Well really I'm just wondering when people are going to realize that the currently accepted conventions for "RPGs" only exist because the hardware and software back in the day wasn't advanced enough to handle the true ruleset for say, Dungeons and Dragons, from which all video RPGs have stemmed. The games weren't able to be in-depth enough to encompass all of what a pen and paper RPG was able to offer, so they did their best to emulate the experience, by severely limiting it out of necessity.

It blows my mind that Deus Ex came out ten years ago, and games are JUST NOW starting to catch up to what was laid forth in that game.

The thing about RPGs in Nintendo consoles is that, like Ian said, Nintendo doesn't make RPGs.

Yes they do: the Paper Mario series, the Mario & Luigi series, Xenoblade. They also make the Fire Emblem and Advance Wars series (which are tactical RPG's), so it is a bald-face lie to say that Nintendo doesn't make RPGs.

Point taken. But you know what I mean. They make those, but they are not 100% behind them.

And with the exception of Xenoblade, they're only RPGs in the vaguest of senses.

Also, I don't want to start and east vs. west debate or anything, but when do you suppose people will stop being satisfied with the "interactive stat block" RPGs, and realize that there's much more to be offered in terms of "role-playing" than just upgrading your skills?

This game is so far from really being 3D I seriously can't believe you guys are complaining about the D-Pad.

I recently replayed King's Quest VI and it was super easy and only like three hours long MAYBE.

There was a SINGLE controller for the 5200 that used a non-centering analog stick, and it sucked.

The Atari and the Vectrex don't even count. It was the first real and successful attempt at integrating an analog stick into a home game controller.

Somehow I don't think that an article in which Miyamoto questions the superiority of the analog stick over the D-Pad lends a whole lot to the argument that controllers are too complicated.

and it would have been easier to grasp and play.

There's a reason the standard has changed. It's easier to push a button to sprint than it is to try and measure how far you're pushing on an analog stick with a grand total of about an inch of flexibility.

Hurr I know everything there is to know about this game and how hard it is and even how long the full game is even though it was announced less than a month ago, and there's literally no way I could ever possibly know that

Oh no, don't worry. I'm sure that this full-length platformer, made by Nintendo for one of their HOME consoles, is going to take two hours to beat.

After all, Super Mario Galaxy 2 only takes that long, right?

And PS: "Educated guess" suggests that there's something educated about it. Why would you compare this to previous kirby games when there hasn't been a kirby game on the home consoles since the Nintendo 64 TEN YEARS AGO, and you said yourself, the gameplay looks to be completely changed up, so really, you have no basis for anything you're saying about the game.

there were only 3 real clones...Ganondorf

No. Are you serious? The whole Fox crew is WAY more clone-y than G-dorf. Ganondorf plays COMPLETELY differently than Captain Falcon. He's on the complete opposite end of the weight/speed spectrum.

the Source engine is a resources hungry monster

Um... No?

Yeah I think it is, asked wayy to much of the CPU.

I ran Half-Life 2 at max settings on a computer with a 2.0GHz Pentium 4, a 256MB Radeon X800GT, and a single gig of DDR1 RAM.

I would hardly call that "asking too much of the CPU" especially when my CPU was my major bottleneck at that point.

1. Stick together
2. Move fast
3. Shoot zombies

That order, you'll win.

Collecting stupid bull**** is that one part of Rare's Donkey Kong that everyone makes fun of.

You are literally the only person I've ever heard complain about that. It's not even like you had to do it.

You might as well put the DK64 rap in while you're at it

And much like a lot of other things, people joke about it, but everybody secretly loves it.

He also revealed that water stages are nowhere to be found in Donkey Kong's new adventure, stating that they felt too slow

That's the point! They're there to break up the fast-paced flow of the ENTIRE REST OF THE GAME. Still probably gonna buy, but HATE.

Dirk, how could you NOT find the d-pad easily accessible on the Wii Remote? Unless your hands are freaky small (like the size of a 4-year old), then your thumb EASILY can reach the d-pad without moving your hand. Even the + and - buttons can be reached without too much effort.

With your hand in an ergonomic grasping position (ie: not the way most men hold beer cans) excepting the possibility that you have mutant thumbs, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to reach any buttons on the D-Pad besides the bottom one without moving your grip, and while you don't have to move your grip to access + or -, they're still well out of the way of being "easily accessible," which is why they have been relegated to pause/menu features. And 1 and 2 are completely non-existent if you're using the nunchuk.

Gonna need some numbers.

EDIT: Just checked, I guess it makes sense. If you added up the different games in the other series it would come out differently.
