General Gaming / Re: Do you still buy games for dead consoles ?

I bought a couple of SNES games a few months back at a retro game shop. Wing Commander was one of them and some Star Trek TNG game was the other. I figure chances are slim to none those would show up on VC (maybe Wing Commander as the PSOne WCIV is available on PSN, but I digress).

Also, I really want to pick up Dragon Quest 8 for PS2. I can order it for $7 (plus shipping) through Amazon and it will be sent lovingly to me by the Goodwill store in Tacoma, Washington! The internet is such a weird place.

Sin and Punishment 3D (new game OR a high-res, high-poly remake of the 1st game!)
You'll be getting this. Its called Kid Icarus Uprising.

Is this a reference to Overclocked or an actual sequel? Is it for 3DS or just ds?

All these rumours about crazy controller functionality (it has Everything a Fanboy could possibly want!! And More!!) make me think of that Simpson's episode where Homer's long lost brother has Homer design a car.

Cleaning a screen is easier than fumbling with a stylus, and stylus control is definitely NOT the scheme intended for games like Ocarina of Time 3D.
Nor for SSFIV 3DS

So, I am on the Silver missions in Pilotwings Resort and many are now to difficult for me to complete with two stars, let alone three.
I am somewhat disappointed by this, I must say.

Everything old is new again, a.k.a., Nintendo never throws anything out.

This from the Wikipedia article about the Wii
"The Nintendo DS is said to have influenced the Wii design. Designer Ken'ichiro Ashida noted, "We had the DS on our minds as we worked on the Wii. We thought about copying the DS's touch-panel interface and even came up with a prototype.""

Wii controller prototype = Wii2 controller (maybe)

I am guessing the pointer replaced the touch screen functionality and for Wii2, it may be the reverse.

EDIT - apparently the quote above is cited to an old Newsweek article. So, slightly more credible than Wikipedia  ;D

IGN now reporting new console is called "project cafe" and has a gamecube-like controller with a built in 6 inch touchscreen that can stream content from the console

Boy, rumours sure are neato.

Hmm, if I start putting away $10 a week, I should have more than enough by the time this thing comes out. I did the same kind of thing with 3DS.
As for the name, how about capitalizing on the 2012 world-ending prophecies? The nintendo Nostradamus? The Wii Oracle?

(Those are really terrible names, aren't they)

Well that settles it. A copy should be on its way through the mail to you within the week. Along with someone else's shoes.

you're welcome  :cool;

Ceric, you make good points.

Its a tough call but I actually think, on balance, I would prefer Last Story and DQX come out on 3DS. I have been able to slowly sink over 74 hours into DQIX but don't nearly have that kind of time to dedicate to any particular console game. Its just the way it has worked out for me so far. So, though I'd like the grandeur of playing involved RPGs on my big TV, I'd probably get more out of the titles if they were portable.

I was thinking specifically of you, James. This game seems right up your alley. I know it ain't "Tales" but would you consider giving the title a spin? I'd love to hear your feedback.

I like this review. With all the buzz lately about Xenoblade (Monado?) and The Last Story and DQX, I wonder why this game hasn't come up. I guess nobody really played it? It has come down in price now (of course) and I must say it looks pretty decent.

I'd get rid of the fantasy/rural setting. Set it a modern day city. Dungeons could be office towers or warehouses or abandoned theatres or mansions in the suburbs. You could wander the streets talking to NPC's like hobos or fruit stand or newspaper stand merchants, or office workers on their lunch hours. You could ride a mtorbike instead of Epona or drive a car or maybe get a chauffeur instead of a fairy companion. Just shake the damn thing up.
(p.s., I haven't read the artcle yet, sorry)

Nemo, re Street Fighter figurine battles: after you set your team you have to take the additional step of enabling the Street Pass functionality in the game. Its near the top of the "figurine" screen, I think I was momentarily tripped up by this requirement. Hope that helps.

Also, re the SpotPass discussion, Capcom pushed me a code for unlockable Street Fighter figurine yesterday. That's clearly a SpotPass right there.

I think SpotPass is enabled though there's likely nothing much to push our way as yet. After I did the firmware update I got a message from Capcom abiout Street Fighter via spotpass. It just said they would update me occasionally unless I opted out. I dunno if that message was connected to the firmware update in some way or not.

I also got a 3D music video pushed with the firmware update which I thought was cool. I guess that's the kind of thing SpotPass notifies you about or maybe even pushes to you if the file is small enough.

Walked through the ginormous local mall for a few hours yesterday with the 3DS in my pocket and picked up 6 hits. Was very suprised. Before that had only two (on separate days).

I love the wee RPG that you can play with StreetPass hits. I wish there was some other way to actually interact though. Like, message back, maybe add as friends. but I suppose Nintendo is just protecting me from bad peple, God bless them  ::)

Anyone know how the 3DS version compares to the console (actually, PS3) version in terms of content? Does the portable have the same number of levels or only a subset?

RazorKid, thanks for the heads up about Rayman. I had mentally dismissed this title due to a couple of awful reviews but I never played the original. I think I'll put Rayman back on my radar. Sounds good.

I am really loving Pilotwings Resort. It has a decent amount of challenge but its not impossible and the controls are perfectly responsive. The 3D is excellent and I like the graphics and music. I also love all the little Nintendo polish touches. The presentation aspects are numerous and they are so subtle that sometimes you hardly notice just how good they are until you pick up a non-Nintendo game...

...like Street Fighter. It has a wicked amount of customizations but you are definitely on your own figuring them out. It just throws you in to menus and let's you fiddle. I wish it provided you the option of being led through some of its myriad choices (like Pilotwings does). Would it be so bad if it asked you "would you like me to tell you about this?" But no, it just kind of barfs everything up at you at once. Oh well, it has a nice thick manual and luckily, I can read!

That's not to say I hate Street Fighter. Its fantastic. I have been jumping in to CPU battles and having at it. They are sometimes hard but experimentation is paying off slowly. Can't wait to get into an online battle for maximum personal humiliation. The 3D is again fabulous, the graphics are amazing and the music and sound effects are well suited. The touchpad combos seem to "work" most but not all of the time but when they do, it sure looks cool. My biggest complaint with the game is that I think Capcom assumed you have played the game a lot before. Its a bit uninviting for the newcomer, like me.

I'm in the middle of the podcast and am not having any problem with the background trivia music. I thought it worked fine. Of course it will sound slightly chaotic to someone who wasn't there but its more than tolerable; entertaining even. Congrats to all.

Just curious how many folk showed up in the audience? Last year was a bit sparse. Was attendance up this time?
