Is Microsoft importing the same model they have used for years with, for example, their Office products? If not already pre-installed, you buy the software on a disc (or, in the old days, several floppy discs) and, once installed, you have to activate your licence for the software by entering a key or registering online. You can't then sell your used copy of Microsoft Office to someone else because the copy on the disc is registered and licensed only to you. It looks to me like it's just a standard software licencing model applied now to X-Box game software.
I get that it limits the used game market and I wholeheartedly agree that it completely sucks balls. What I am asking is if there is something particularly novel in the model that I am missing.

@Ian, the article mentioned they'll have a list of which stores have demos and which game demos are available at each store, so I wouldn't worry. They had very clear info on which Best Buys had Wii U demo stations prior to the launch, so should be good this time too.

I think more games will keep the Wii U generally afloat.
It will be interesting to see what happens when the Sony and Microsoft consoles come out. They will get a decent splash of sales off the top, I am sure. But those rising dev costs could mean that, instead of going bankrupt, some mid-tier devs will make "current gen", reasonably costed games that can run on all 3 systems. Or not. I'm no Nostradamus.
As long as Nintendo keeps putting out the occasional/quarterly good game and there are some interesting e-shop or other releases in the gaps, I'll be fine. I really like the Wii U and don't yet have a yen to pick up anything else. We'll see. If awesome Star Wars games start showing up for other platforms, I may be forced to bite.
