I doubt 20 GB. Seems a bit like overkill. Most games don't even reach the max 8.5GB of DVDs.

Just how big are these games for the xbox 360, PS3 and wii?

I figure the average size of the games for these consoles are:

Wii: 8 GB
PS3: 30 to 50 GB
360: 20 to 40 GB

Just my guess. Does anyone else have a rough figure?

I was at Wal-mart a few days ago and noticed that they were selling   4 GB flash drives for $10. Not a bad deal, but it is a sign that the prices are coming down on the technology. What is to say that necy year it is 8GB in the $10 range?

How big are the average wii games? Are they 8 GB? I forsee wii 2 games being in the the 20 GB range?

I'm wagering that Nintendo will use some sort of cartridge/card format. It would suit their needs more than any type of optical medium.

Cartridges are so 1990s, Mop It Up. Do you really want to go back to those days? I mean optical media is a pain to deal with thanks to the its fragility, but I never want to return to cartridges.

Random complaint, but why does Jonny keep reversing the numbers in Kytim89's user name when he reads his letters on RFN?  It's Kytim89, not Kytim98.  I think this is the second time this has happened.

Three times actually.

Doesn't Nintendo have a movie channel or something like that in Japan?

Yes, and it is called "Wii no ma." There were rumors that it was coming to America, but from what I have seen of it, it does not look very impressive.

That would work were it true, but Avatar wasn't the first 3d movie.

The first high profile, big budgeted 3D movie.

What I meant was that Avatar was a ground breaking film in regards to 3D and there is no doubt that the 3DS will be a success with 3D gaming. Why not pare the two together? They seem like the perfect couple, right?

If the 3DS does have the ability to play movies, Nintendo should allow the movie Avatar to be advertised along with the 3DS and its movie player to symbolize that the first 3D movie is playable on the first true 3D console.

Why? The current system is still selling great (and is still at $200) and shows no sign of slowing down. There is no reason or incentive for Nintendo to release a new system anytime soon.
TJ is exactly right. With the 3DS approaching release that will be the system to hold you over until the Wii 2 is released.

Nintendo's R & D budget reportedly tripled since the launch of the Wii in 2006, suggesting that a new console could be in an advanced stage of pre-production. With the Wii still enjoying phenomenal success, it would be unlikely that Nintendo would want to launch the Wii 2 anytime soon. Let's not forget Nintendo's launch history with delays factored in either.
Oh, hah... I didn't mean bring out the next console right now. I meant by the end of next year.  I just hope the Vitality Sensor doesn't take precedence over a new console possibly getting released by the end of next year -- causing it to get pushed back.

And yeah, the 3DS will definitely tide me over until the next console's release. No prob there.

Nintendo can still sell a crapton of Wiis even after a new console launches.  Sony's PS2 is proof of that.  Don't even tell me that you can only have ONE console out on the shelf... I'm not gonna believe that for one second. Casuals will continue to eat up the Wii a couple of years after the release of a new console -- especially if it's geared a little more back at the traditional crowd.

If the wii 2 i revealed while the wii is going strong, sales and interested in the wii will plummet and the wii 2 will be the new console of interest. The PS2 sold well because no one could afford a PS3 at the time and Nintendo will make the wii 2 affordable so that people can buy it up quickly.

Could the online capabilities of the 3DS accomodate something like an MMO? This might sound dumb, but I like the idea of taking something like Final Fantasy 11 or Star Wars: The Old Republic on the go.

This may well be possible, but we won't know until at least the September announcement with final hardware features, pricing, and a release date for Japan. I agree that a true portable MMO makes sense and would seem to be one of the most obvious untapped areas in all of gaming right now.

Bioware has recently expressed interest in treating the 3DS like the PS360 if the internet connectivity is good enough. I really like Bioware games, but I would really like them better on the go. This is why I like Sonic Chronicles so much.

I read an article recently where an interview was conducted with Greg Zeschuck of Bioware and he basically stated that his company is ready to develop heavily for the 3DS if the internet connectivity is good. This has got me thinking of a portable Mass Effect game where DLC is administered via wi-fi hot spots. It seems all the major HD franchises are getting handheld titles and I would rather see this happen to the 3DS than the PSP or the PSP 2.

How would a portable MMO work? I agree with you that this type of market has not really been viable in the past and we might be seeing the birth of a new form of game play.

I know that I am out of mind for saying this, but since Microsoft  is not in the handheld market yet maybe they could allow 3DS iterations of Halo, Perfect Dark, Crack Down, Fable, Gears of War and maybe Conker with heavy emphasis on both gameplay and portable internet connectivity.

You might ask why do I want them on 3DS when I can just buy an xbox? Yes, i could buy and xbox, but I want these series on the go with the 3DS.

I am actually stuck in Super Mario Galaxy 2 where I have to complete a bunch of time trials and races to get stars and beat world 4. I am also stuck in the chain chomp factory where Mario must put on a spring suit and make it across the level without running into wrolling chain chomps. This level is literally making me tear my hair out.

If Nintendo does a third installment of this series, I wish that they would make these trials optional, or something on the side where you are not constrained by your inability to complete them. Basically where I am at in the game I am stuck there until I complete these trials. This takes me away from the game itself and is really frustrating.

Overall, this is one of the best games that I have ever played and Nintendo was on their A game(no pun intended) when producing this title.

Andy and I said our Wiis have been acting strangely.
Hmm, could the early Wiis be starting to fail?  Mine has always had some problems, but it's worse now -- it freezes up, especially at the Health screen.

I bought my wii in the fall of 2008, so I should not have anything to worry about, right? I hope so because I take good care of my wii.

3087
How does the the vitality sensor play into the wii 2? I think Nintendo will probably push it back to the time of the wii 2 so that it have one more gimmick.

I find it ironic that this guy's name is "Treadwell" considering that he was hanging around a bunch of bears. This guy was asking to be eaten by the bears.

Andy and I said our Wiis have been acting strangely.

This is the first time a Newscast thread has hit two pages (I think). What's sad is that a genuine discussion is not being had. Rather, we're somehow debating whether or not the Game Boy Advance, a ten year old handheld, had the same kind of market penetration that the Wii did and continues to have.

Here's the answer: It did not, and my word is law.

Now, let's discuss other things. Like daffodils and lemon drops.

Which games of this holiday season is everyone looking to buy?

I have a one hundred dollar budget this year and I want Metroid: Other M. I am still on the fence for the second game, but I am interested in the following:

Epic Mickey
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Conduit 2
Golden Eye 007

I should do some kind of elimination contest to determine which one of these four will be the final contestant.

No, I want to know how you noticed that your Wii feels slightly warmer after using it. Do you routinely feel it after use?

I put my wiimote and nunchuck on top of my wii when I am finished playing and I noticed that every time that the wii is warm. In fact, the area around the fan is really warm, too.

Neal mentioned that his wii malfunctioned and this reminded me that my wii is strangely warmer than usual after playing games. It might be nothing, but it gor  really hot on top.

Do you mind me asking how you noticed this?

Neal was the one who said that his wii was freezing up and he was debating on whether to ship the wii to Nintendo for repairs, right?

I was lost when the Game Boy Advance was supposed to be comparable to the Wii. I don't get how there is any stretch of logic where a conservative follow-up to (at the time) the most successful handheld device ever is at all similar to the gamble that was the launch of the Wii.

I got a little over my head with this argument but I knwo what I want to say but I am having trouble explaining it clearly.

While I don't want to encourage the Rare name drops, 3DS Rare titles are entirely possible and most likely probable since Microsoft likes making money and 3DS will undoubtedly be successful.

Anyway, I read that the 3DS D-Pad at E3 wasn't final. I don't recall any hands-on impressions complaining about it. It certainly looks comfortable to use though I expect most games to use the slider over the D-Pad (touchscreen/motion controls notwithstanding).

This is why I brought the subject up and those two games are ones that I would really like to have on the go. I couldn't care less any other way.

I know that Rare games will never come to the virtual console, but I would not mind seeing 3D enhanced remakes of Conker and Perfect Dark for the 3DS. Viva Pinata came over to the DS, so these two games would be pretty nice on the go.

You do see how your whole analogy contradicts itself, right?

And that me giving up and running in circles was a reference to cyclical logic

Looking back I realized that the PSP was never really a threat to the DS. Just like the move and kinect will not be a threat to the wii 2.

Perhaps my analogy is not as much contradictory as much as I am having trouble explaining it clearly.

@kytim
I understand your analogy, I just think that it doesn't apply very well.
The GBA was doing well enough, and Nintendo released the DS around the same time as the PSP. Where the analogy goes sour for me is that the PSP wasn't aping the GBA, it was trying to be something much more.

Quote
really did not pay off in the long run
Quote
GBA had stood alone against the PSP, it would have been squashed like a mosquito
These two quotes directly oppose each other.

What would the handheld market have been like if the DS had never emerged and the GBA was alone to compete against the PSP? Chances are that the PSP would have dominated the market. However, the DS did keep the PSP down in the last five years though.

As for the PSP not paying off in the long run, it is true that the PSP is not the success story that Sony wanted it be. I remember back in 2005 sitting with my DS thinking about how the DS was going to beat the PSP since the PSP was basically a handheld PS2. The PSP Go did not get a warm welcome and people have been complaining since day one that the PSP is not good simply because it has only one analog nub.

This is my analogy and I am sticking to it. History is repeating itself with motion controls the same the GBA-PSP-DS went down in the early 2000s.

Basically Nintendo has motion controlled games in their pocket. Sony and Microsoft and will release their own motion controls with move and natal and eventually Nintendo will reveal the Wii 2 that has motion controls that put both move and natal in their place.

The bottom line is that move and kinect will not put up much of a threat to the wii or the wii 2. If this were 2006 then I would be very worried, but Nintendo knows what they are doing in regards to motion controls.
