I wonder how many of those TV manufacturers also sell HDMI switchers on the side.

But yeah, I'm probably looking to buy a new TV in the next couple of years and I don't think I'm going to find something with like, five HDMI ports for a reasonable price. Let alone finding a proper dumb TV.

The two rules of being president: Bed Keith David, and f**k cancer. (Or COVID.)

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53276/nintendo-downloads-march-26-2020

Aside from the presidential simulation of Saints Row IV: Re-Elected, the headliner releases this week in terms of price are One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 (the latest misadventures of the manga/anime that started running when I was in high school), and Railway Empire which is probably coming out at a bad time, all things considered.

If you prefer your sci-fi a little odder, there's Deep Sky Derelicts or the "Oregon Trail IN SPACE" of the Hyperspace Delivery Service, and if you're into vampire fiction there's a game based on White Wolf's Vampire: The Masquerade series. (Look for a review on that tomorrow.) Children of Zodiarcs is out from the good folks at Humble Bundle, and One Step from Eden is Mega Man Battle Network gone roguelike which sounds like a recipe for being as hard as balls.

The oddities of the week come in Europe which gets a week-late release of the thoroughly replacement level RBI Baseball 20, and a (checks) 18 months late release of the Ubisoft-published Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy games.

TalkBack / R.B.I. Baseball 20 (Switch) Review
« on: March 19, 2020, 02:07:25 PM »

All told, MLB handled game development slightly better than they handled the Houston Asterisks.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/53247/rbi-baseball-20-switch-review

RBI Baseball has always been a middling franchise on Switch since its 2017 debut, and it certainly doesn’t help that it has two bits of competition coming up to take its job. Between Super Mega Baseball 3 next month and MLB The Show from Sony next year, I’d be surprised if we see an RBI 21. And for what is in all likelihood the final entry, it goes out just slightly better than it came in but still isn’t fully recommendable unless you need a MLB fix right now and don’t want to splash out for a PS4 and this year’s MLB The Show.

Since it’s officially developed and published by MLB Advanced Media, RBI does have all of the current MLB players/teams/stadiums you’d want in a sim. There are also a collection of “legends” teams, divided into a selection of baseball Hall of Fame players and a “Classics” group who would mostly fit into a “Let’s Remember Some Guys” column if Deadspin still existed. Each team is rated out of 99 in three offensive stats: contact, power, and speed, and three defensive stats: rotation/starting pitching, bullpen/relief pitching, and fielding to give an idea of their relative strengths, but I have to cast doubt on some of these ratings. I’m as big of a Toronto Blue Jays fan as is possible when they’re 17 hours away by car, and I know their bullpen isn’t a 92. Among regular teams, that puts them in a multi-way tie for third, and only two points below the New York Yankees who are roundly considered the best bullpen in the game. And why does a game published by the sport's governing body still not know how to score a play as basic as a sacrifice fly?

The batter should be 1-1 with a run batted in.

The various play modes are similar to what RBI 19 offered: one-off exhibition games, a tournament mode modeled after the Major League postseason (with forced Wild Card play in game), a franchise mode that runs for ten seasons, and a Home Run Derby that also borrows the most recent tournament format. A typical game will usually run about 30-40 minutes depending on how often the players swing at the ball. The controls are once again defaulted to “modern” controls, which involve using the analog stick to select a pitch or swing location, though it can be set to “classic” controls which simplifies things to just a B button press. Fielding can be set to the user’s preference for manual or automatic control of the closest player. I found the manual controls worked well, but in testing the automatic controls it had a lot of issues with play in the infield: a ball hit in between the pitcher’s mound and 3rd that I expected the pitcher to field saw him sprint to first. There were also more than a few plays where a ball would be hit to the first baseman and the pitcher would try to cover first base, but would fail to complete the out by stepping on the bag.

I found the best combination of difficulty and control options for me was Normal difficulty, with the classic controls. I lost pretty badly with the modern controls on Normal, but putting the game to Easy made things laughable regardless of what control method I used. Notably, I would routinely threaten to or actually trigger a ten run mercy rule playing on Easy mode - and there was no way to disable it. Maybe MLB will implement it for the shortened 2020 season, but I’m not holding my breath about a season happening. Even during my postseason test, I managed to trigger it when winning the World Series:

Technically, the game is mostly fine - though the above video does show some odd movement for the ball: it stops dead in its tracks about ten feet behind the third baseman like it hit a wall. I saw a similar effect when hitting a home run. (The Skydome/Rogers Centre doesn’t have a catwalk, or that ball was going to end up somewhere around Buffalo before its hard right turn.) Other versions of RBI have online play, so its omission from the Switch version is perplexing. The load times are frequent, and the framerate of video clips such as the start of the game can drop dramatically. Players with trademark features (such as the prescription glasses worn by the Blue Jays regular catcher) don’t appear on Switch, which did detract from the presentation slightly. Blessedly, they have added a licensed soundtrack since I last played RBI, and there’s a decent variety of tunes there.

We may not have a season this year, but lolmets is eternal.

When we didn’t have many options for baseball games on Switch, I put way more time into RBI Baseball than would be considered sane. But with the arcade realm owned by the two Super Mega Baseball games and the Arcade Archives, and the best in the business arriving next year, RBI Baseball is probably going to end up as a talking head on a team’s postgame show.

TalkBack / The Things I Played In Self-Isolation
« on: March 19, 2020, 06:59:00 AM »

Snappy thoughts on the games of a lost quarter of someone’s life.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/53243/the-things-i-played-in-self-isolation

Recent events have brought the concept of self-isolation to the forefront for many people. Various states of emergency make it impossible to do much of anything social in public, and based on Verizon network traffic, a lot of people are turning to video games to kill the time. However, because of an ongoing medical issue that hospitalized me for a week and a half in December and kept me out of work since, I’ve been self-isolating with very limited exceptions since a week before Christmas.

With the “off work” portion of the recovery about to come to an end, I figured it was time to take stock of the stuff that I played in the last three months. Maybe it’ll give someone inspiration for things that don’t involve Tom Nook this week.

Review games

Aside from the one expansion review which will be addressed later, I did review Puzzle and Dragons Gold and Code: Realize ~Guardian of Rebirth~. P&D Gold didn’t really last long, while I got a solid week+ out of Code: Realize and hope to pick up the fan disc when it comes out next month (and maybe Wintertide Blessings if it gets localized later this year?)

Pokémon Sword and Shield

I didn’t really start Pokémon until I got in the hospital because of general malaise in the weeks leading up to the release, but when I did I managed to accomplish my goal of a living Galardex with a few, uh, HOURS to spare before Pokémon Home launched. Happiness evolutions never cease to drive me crazy.

As part of the process and not really trusting the internet (especially Surprise Trade because this is when the game-crashing trades that were recently patched were at their worst), I had to also beat Shield including its postgame. Thankfully, the second run saw me use less than a full box since it was Galarian forms only, so it took about half the time to reach first credits. And the announcement of the Expansion Pass means I’ll get to hopefully do something with my staycation in June.

Yoshi’s Crafted World

I got a LOT of eShop credit for Christmas, so I went in a bit heavy on catching up on games that I had passed by due to lack of time. One of the things I picked up was Yoshi’s Crafted World, because as Zach will tell us, getting IVs and being on a drip is nothing but stress and I wanted something breezy. It was a good selection for that, as Mellow Mode let me try and find everything in the levels without worrying about pesky things like death.

I didn’t end up beating it, but I might have a stress relief game for when work starts up again.

The Jackbox Party Pack(s)

This covers Packs 2-5, as between my roommate/myself/a mutual friend, those were the ones we busted out for New Year’s Eve. I was kind of disappointed that they didn’t appreciate my PhD in Robotic Thuganomics in 5’s Mad Verse City, and Monster Seeking Monster from the 4th doesn’t work with someone suffering from depression who’s also aromantic. But Quiplash and Fibbage never get old. Bomb Corp (from 2) ended up being the biggest time sink of them all, and even prompted our mutual friend to come over later and see if we could try to get past Wednesday of the in-game work week. (We succeeded, but discovered that my roommate needs to upgrade their phone soonish.)

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore

I didn’t end up reviewing this one—Daan handled that for us—but had I reviewed it I might have talked myself into the full monty. It’s the same game that was robbed from our Game of the Decade top 20 by a bad Super Nintendo game, but with more fun and WAY less loading. I even managed to complete the one major thing I missed in my Wii U run by getting Itsuki and Tsubasa’s Duo Art.

And because of the shorter load times (and moving full time onto Easy St) I managed to clear the game in 45 hours compared to the 70 it took me on the Wii U. And it’s the closest we’ll ever get to having Persona 5 on Switch because you can play as Joker in a turn-based RPG (Port Royal to Switch you cowards, or I’m not playing it until the PlayStation 5 Slim comes out. If then.)

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

When this isolation period started, my save clock for Three Houses was at 85 hours. I was in chapter 8 of a Blue Lions run (my second), and not really feeling the urge to continue. Admittedly, Pokémon was part of the problem here.

As of March 18, I am sitting with nearly 300 hours on the clock, having finished three runs (Cindered Shadows, Blue Lions, Golden Deer) and being 80% of the way through my second Black Eagles run so I can hook up with the character who only got added after I beat it the first time. My goal is now to get every single female Byleth support conversation into the ingame log, so I will have to do one more full run—but honestly, I look forward to it. I’ve learned that just because the class is a Master class doesn’t make it good, and that Ignatz makes a decent dancer if it comes down to it.

And as a side effect, I might be able to get all the DLC characters to finish their supports, and have figured out how to get enough Renown to choke a horse when starting new runs. (If you’re wondering, the solution is to grind cash with the DLC maps at every opportunity then use the money to buy the 1 and 2 star seeds and trade them at the Abyss altar. 49500g gets 4990 renown, roughly.)

So what’s to come? If my time off gets extended—I can’t really go to the office in my condition and am locked out so I can’t work from home yet—what are my plans besides finishing 3H once and for all?

Review games: I put myself down for four games coming out over the next couple of weeks. Without spoiling what they are aside from the one that’s out (RBI Baseball 20), the others are in the genres of RPG, adventure, and anime.

Doom 64: As mentioned in the downloads article this week, I’m glad I can play this for longer than ten minutes at a friend’s house in 1997.

Dragon Quest XI S: This one is chief among the stuff I bought in late 2019 but didn’t get around to. See also: Luigi’s Mansion 3, Daemon X Machina (my New Year’s gift to myself was a Split Pad Pro, to boot).

Final Fantasy X: I still want to beat Penance, but I just have so many HP Spheres to grind...  maybe I don’t need 99,999 HP on the trio for that six creature tag?

Divinity Original Sin II: My roommate wants to try co-op with me, and it is a game we gave a 10 to, but I feel like I missed my opportunity to grab it.

TalkBack / Nintendo Online Services Recovering From Extended Outage
« on: March 17, 2020, 05:14:56 AM »

At least it wasn't on Thursday or Friday.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53209/nintendo-online-services-recovering-from-extended-outage

The eShop and all active Nintendo online games are in the process of recovering from an extended outage.

Currently online games are functioning, though users are unable to access the eShop either on the web or on a system. Nintendo of America has acknowledged the errors:

A common error message appears to be related to the Domain Name Service (DNS) information for the eShop: depending on the end user's provider of DNS services, a fix can take up to 48 hours to propogate.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53206/nintendo-ny-store-closes-for-forseeable-future-due-to-covid-19

The COVID-19 virus has forced Nintendo's flagship store in New York to close.

The store made the announcement tonight following the close of business that the store would shut down for the "forseeable future".

The state of New York has issued executive orders barring gatherings of more than 50 people and closing movie theaters and gyms while restricting restaurants to take-out and delivery to limit the virus's spread. Non-complying event organizers could face disorderly conduct citations and even arrest.

I can't support Animal Crossing because we're supposed to be self-isolating right now.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53198/nintendo-downloads-march-19-2020

A historic, long-awaited game is finally coming out on the Switch on Friday, and I for one look forward to blasting cacodemons into ludicrous gibs because frankly, it'd be easier than putting up with Tom Nook's crap. While most of the world downloads Animal Crossing: New Horizons, I'm going to get my ripping and tearing on with the return of Doom 64, a game I always wanted to pick up but couldn't find once I had a job as opposed to an allowance. (My parents bought me Final Doom for my 12th birthday, that was not going to be an obstacle.)

Other things to look forward to this week include Ittle Dew 2+ achieving its freedom and returning to the eShop, while friend of the site ClexYoshi will soon be haranguing everyone to play the La Mulana collection coming out on Tuesday/Friday. In a world where all sports are shut down, we can maybe enjoy the final season of RBI Baseball before a hot prospect comes over from AAA Sony for the 2021 season.

Japan is giving me the emotional bends in particular this week, as the joy of Sen no Kiseki/Trails of Cold Steel III is HIGHLY tempered by the launch of another goddamn game from the series that will not be named.

The only reason they haven't cancelled Wrestlemania yet is because they're trying to push the host region into cancelling it so they get a major insurance payout. Though Vince McMahon would probably rather die than move the show: he continued running a show after Owen Hart DIED IN THE RING, and ran a show two days after the 9/11 attacks.

In regards to the Raptors I did see that they were going to get tested while they self quarantine.  It very well of could of been the Raptors that had it first but that really doesn't matter. What matters is that people on different organizations self quarantine and get tested.

Raptors tests come back almost entirely negative, but will continue to quarantine.

I run a Galaxy Note 9 currently. Due to upgrade around Black Friday, though I wonder what my options are that involve not having courage (having a standard headphone jack). I'm so paranoid I bought an honest-to-Naga MP3 player.

We have a pretty robust employment insurance plan up here and they're expediting claims for it, so that is an option. Source

TalkBack / Ittle Dew 2+ Returning To Switch eShop Next Week
« on: March 13, 2020, 07:07:28 AM »

Freed from a toxic publishing environment, the Zelda-like will be available again.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53177/ittle-dew-2-returning-to-switch-eshop-next-week

After several months on the sidelines, a controversially delisted game will be back on the eShop on Thursday.

Ittle Dew 2+, originally developed by Ludosity, was published on Switch in November of 2017 by Nicalis. Following an unspecified breach of contract the publishing rights were set to revert to Ludosity, but Nicalis pulled the game from the eShop on September 19. Ludosity has now reclaimed the rights and will publish the game effective on March 19 - six months to the day of the original delisting.

I think Soren retweeted something showing how every team in the league can be traced back to the Jazz in the two weeks prior to Wednesday (either playing them, or playing an opponent who might have transmitted it).

1319
Thread title continues to be justified. Sayeth Woj: Donovan Mitchell has tested positive because Gobert was touching other players and their belongings.

Dude might be out of the league before this is all over.

This wasn't written by a Replicant. As far as we know...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53175/1997-pc-title-blade-runner-reverse-engineered-for-switch-release

A classic PC game thought to have lost source code is going to come to Switch this year.

Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition, a 1997 point-and-click PC adventure game developed by Westwood Studios, will release on Switch sometime in 2020. Although not an adaptation of the 1982 Ridley Scott film, the events of the game take place alongside the events of the film.

The enhanced edition will be developed by Nightdive Studios, who remastered the first two Turok: Dinosaur Hunter games previously for Switch. In a 2015 interview, Westwood's founder admitted that the source code for Blade Runner was lost when the company relocated following their acquisition by Electronic Arts, but Nightdive worked to reverse-engineer the code to bring the graphics to modern standards.

TalkBack / Nintendo And LEGO Teaming Up For Interactive Mario Line
« on: March 12, 2020, 02:13:00 AM »

Neither a video game, nor a traditional LEGO set.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53172/nintendo-and-lego-teaming-up-for-interactive-mario-line

The LEGO tease a couple of days ago was for a new type of figure featuring our beloved plumber.

LEGO and Nintendo officially announced a partnership for the Mario series today, showing off new figures that interact. Launching later this year, Mario will collect coins by interacting with other LEGO playsets themed around the series, while playing several iconic sound effects.

Retail leaks earlier this week suggested the series would have thirteen sets, though more details are expected soon.

The closest comparable I can find to a suspension this late in a season would be when Major League Baseball suspended play after 9/11, but that was only for a week. (It still resulted in the World Series ending on November 4.) In that case, all the games were made up at the end of the regular season.

For the NBA, I doubt every team would lose the same number of games which would make it easy to just write them off. I suppose if they don't spend three weeks on first round playoff series and try to get games in every other night they could probably end around Father's Day as usual, but more likely the draft would be in early July and free agency would probably begin on the 15th or 22nd of July.

1323
The NBA has suspended the season.

Holy crap.

E3 joined the list at the bottom here today, and given that the city of Seattle is restricting public gatherings to 250 people, I'm going on the assumption that PAX West is going to go down for the count soon.
