TalkBack / Dungeon Of The Endless Crash Landing On Switch May 15
« on: April 09, 2020, 02:00:00 AM »

How about a little doggo in your tower defense?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53438/dungeon-of-the-endless-crash-landing-on-switch-may-15

A PC tower defense game with a cute hidden character is making its console debut on Switch next month.

Dungeon of the Endless will launch on May 15 on the eShop, with a 20% discounted preload available now. Developer Amplitude Studios and Sega have commissioned Playdigious to port the PC game to Switch, and a limited physical version will be available from Merge Games.

In Dungeon of the Endless, players control a group of adventurers who crash land on a planet and have to get to the surface while protecting the generator from hordes of monsters. Several add-ons from the PC version will be included on Switch, as well as the early unlock of a playable pug named Ayairi.

Most people are taking the week off for Final Fantasy: You Can (Not) Remake reasons.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53435/nintendo-downloads-april-9-2020

It's a quiet week in the digital space, with top honors probably going to NIS America showing a great deal of testicular fortitude by charging full price for Disaster Report 5?/4 coming west. For more information on that, we would refer you to last week's Radio Free Nintendo. Aside from an Overcooked update, the other big drop is Saturday's (???) release of famous PC strategy title Tharsis.

An intriguing smaller possibility is Gunbrick: Reloaded, the newest puzzle game from Bomb Chicken/Shovel Knight Dig developers Nitrome. Hamster is also coming through as usual with this week's selection a true Konami deep cut in Flak Attack.

Foreign shores see the launch of Depixtion (the colorful nonogrammer), while Japan... you know it's a light week when the ACA game is the third most expensive of the bunch.

We had to summon Feh to kill the anime.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53359/nintendo-downloads-april-2-2020

The big game of the week for me is something that I already ended up playing: Operencia The Stolen Sun dropped on Tuesday and you can see my review for it right here. I'm also keeping an eye on Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, especially since they're promising more villains, but a local-MP only game seems rather suboptimal right now in the era of social distancing. An HD remaster of Ty: The Tasmanian Tiger, freed from its corporate overlords, is also out this week.

The advantage of holding this past April Fool's Day (aside from ducking all the anime) is that we can catch amusing shadowdrops, such as WayForward dusting off 2013 AFD joke Cat Girl Without Salad and actually releasing it on Switch. Not a word of lie. Your Archives game of the week is The Tin Star from Taito.

The foreign stores sees Japan get a slightly late release of Panzer Dragoon and a fashionbly late release for RBI Baseball 20.

Originally released for PlayStation 4 in 2018 by Nihon Falcom, NIS America is handling localization of the game for the Switch. No date beyond "2021" is given for the game, but a limited edition of the game with a soundtrack, art book, and cloth poster is now available on the NIS America store for US$99.99.

TalkBack / Outer Worlds Reschedules Switch Landing To June 5
« on: March 31, 2020, 02:33:17 AM »

A fine (spacer's) choice for a release date.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53376/outer-worlds-reschedules-switch-landing-to-june-5

After a COVID-19 induced delay, The Outer Worlds has a new ETA.

The Obsidian-created space RPG will now release on Switch on June 5, with a physical cartridge version and on the eShop. It was originally slated for a March release, but was delayed when the porting studio Virtuos (located in China) was forced to suspend business due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Although the game will come on a card in its physical form, there will be a patch available day one that will require roughly 6-7 GB of Switch memory.

You can add one half of Kato-chan and Ken-chan to the list according to NHK (Japanese link, obviously).

RIP Ken-chan.

Regarding the snowbirds (who are also coming up from Florida as well): they have to self-isolate immediately upon returning to Canada and are getting routed to one of four airports that have enhanced testing capabilities.

TalkBack / Operencia: The Stolen Sun (Switch) Review
« on: March 27, 2020, 02:36:10 AM »

Hello darkness, my old friend…

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/53287/operencia-the-stolen-sun-switch-review

Zen Studios is usually known for their high quality digital interpretations of pinball, but they’ve had success in the past when they branched out to tower defense with 2013 Wii U release CastleStorm. In 2019, they self-published Operencia: The Stolen Sun for PC and Xbox, a first attempt at creating an RPG for the studio. Operencia hit the Switch a few months later, and it’s a solid port of a fine game that lives up to Zen’s pedigree.

There is a defined party in Operencia, though it is led by a character that you have to create. There are eight different designs of character—four male, four female—and three different classes (Warrior, Mage, and Hunter) to choose from. Most of the world exploration and all of the combat is from a first-person perspective, though your character’s design will be visible when story explanations are required along with the six teammates that eventually join you. These can come in the form of brief chats while exploring or extended conversations around the campfires in the world that also serve as saving and healing points for the party. The world is divided into a grid similar to what is seen in the classic Wizardry series of RPGs, though for most Nintendo players the closest comparison would be Atlus’s Etrian Odyssey series. A map is always on screen that fills in as you walk; there is even an ingame achievement for disabling the automap for an entire playthrough. Movement itself is confined to the four cardinal directions with the ability to strafe. There are treasures scattered around the environment, some of which are in chests that can require keys, while smaller items like the keys and the firewood used for saving is loose on the floor.

Each area you explore will have a fixed number of combat encounters caused by enemies that roam the world map. It’s possible to ambush the enemy and guarantee the first attack, but the enemies can also ambush your party. The battles are turn-based, with the order of attacking determined by who has the highest “initiative” statistic at that point in the battle. Although you’ll end up with a total party of seven, you can only have four appear in battle at once with the campfires also serving as the swapping point. Each party member has two basic attacks and can unlock skills in combat as well as statistical buffs as they get experience: blessedly, all party members get the same experience regardless of whether or not they participate. The extra skills, such as healing and elemental damage, run on a combination of skill points and a cooldown system that makes battles tougher because it’s not possible to spam high powered attacks or healing every round regardless of whether you have the skill points. There’s no free healing after combat in Operencia unless a character levels up, at which point they get set to maximum HP and skill points. Experience is also earned for completing quests, which mostly makes up for the general inability to grind the party out of trouble.

When the prince(ss) kisses the frog and it goes horribly wrong.

The storyline of Operencia is a basic one. The created character is originally assigned to rescue maidens from a sunken palace, but eventually discovers that the sun has stopped shining on the land and it’s their job to get it moving again. This will naturally require ascending from the “Lower World” to a “Middle World” and eventually to the gods themselves to find out what’s going on. Interestingly, it’s not the main story that shines in Operencia; it’s the interactions between your party members that steal the show and drive the plot forward. And it’s not just the main character who gets needled; everyone gives and receives barbs in equal measure throughout the adventure. Since most of the scenes happen at campfires, I was always a little disappointed when I would find a new one and not get a new cutscene to explain the world, or just bust the nuts of one of the haughtier men in my party. Even the end of battle scenes can be quite entertaining, as I never really got tired of someone saying to the character I named “You know, I never quite got your name”.

On a technical level, Operencia is a solid version of the game when playing docked. I did find that a Switch Lite screen made some of the text a little difficult to read at times, but as something initially designed for consoles or extremely high-resolution PC monitors I wasn’t surprised. It also wasn’t immediately obvious as to how to actually apply the stat boosts upon getting a level up, as the character growth menus on Switch are tied to hitting up on the d-pad/directional buttons and then hitting the shoulder buttons to move through the character menu. No matter how I played though, there were noticeable load times when booting the game and when transitioning to a new area; thankfully, the latter doesn’t happen all that often, but it was particularly noticeable in the transitions after the third chapter because the second chapter technically isn’t completed until after chapter 3 is. Graphically the game holds up fine, and the music is solid medieval fare with some fairly satisfying sound effects when good things happen in combat.

Operencia differs from a lot of the dungeon crawlers on Switch: it’s more of a low fantasy story, and its fixed story and chapters helps to differentiate it from the dozens of roguelikes and roguelites we’ve seen in the past few years. For that alone, Operencia: The Stolen Sun is worth a long look.

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, announced to be coming to the Switch last fall, has appeared on the Canadian Switch eShop's coming soon section with a release date of tomorrow. The game is listed for $25.19 Canadian, which would translate to a $19.99 US price tag. No comparable listing is on the US or European stores.

The game was previously listed as coming out for PlayStation 4 tomorrow, but no mention was made of the Switch release. The port will contain an online multiplayer mode for up to 16 players.

Although it depends on the storyteller, White Wolf’s Vampire: The Masquerade universe is an often brutal look at how a secret society of vampires that dates back more than a millenium handles modern times. I have a little bit of experience with the story from my early days of tabletop roleplaying, so I jumped on the new Switch game, Coteries of New York, once I realized it was a true visual novel. As an exploration of modern vampire life, it’s a gripping story, but it’s missing some things that would be needed to make it a better-playing game.

I'll take "Fates Worse Than Undeath" for $200, Alex.

Coteries of New York places you in the role of a newly-created vampire in the Big Apple. Your mysterious sire bites you one evening and then disappears, leaving you at the mercy of the secret society called the Camarilla. The Camarilla is an intensely hierarchical organization devoted to maintaining the Masquerade: the ability for vampires to live their lives in the human world while not revealing themselves. Your character is mostly defined (gender, age, and family background as a human), though you can choose from a few of the tabletop game’s tribes of vampires. The objective is to form your own coterie (group) of vampires of various tribes while also navigating the power struggle between the Camarilla and other groups who reject the hierarchy, which is referred to as “Anarchs.” All the while, your vampire has to stay out of the sun and feed on humans (willing or otherwise) to prevent a hunger known as “The Beast” from forcing your character’s unlife to end. Although you have specific vampiric powers (super speed, strength, or charisma) depending on your tribe, using them will cause The Beast to flare up more often.

Although there isn’t a lot of action per se in Coteries, there is a great deal of choice. In addition to multiple dialogue options, the building of your “friend” group is carved up into a series of vignettes that you can select from a map of the five boroughs. Since it’s about survival in the modern world, I was pleased to see more than a few mentions of modern social media and relatively current events: one character is off-handedly mentioned as being connected to a specific, noted public pedophile. Each night roughly allows for two rounds of interaction, though one of these will frequently be taken up by the main story, which I wanted to skip so I could hang out with the other vampires.

The biggest issue with the game is that it doesn’t have an easy way to see if I’m actually making progress toward a true ending, or even if there is one. (Not having one would be in character for the universe, admittedly.) There’s no flowchart or guide to endings that I could find, and only a couple of decisions are blocked off to start, so this will keep the guide writers busy for a while. Unlike most VNs I’ve played, though, the “Fast” text speed is almost too fast: I actually had to turn it down to medium for new content on replaying since it would cause information to scroll off screen at my chosen text size. There also isn’t a text skipping option which would come in handy for repetitive text such as the warnings about needing to feed or anything repeated, but it is supposed to be added in a patch after launch. It’s easy to understand the specific terminology in play, though the transitions from the main screen to the dictionary and back are a bit slower than I expected.

I love shoot comments that aren't meant to be shoot comments.

Any vampire game is inevitably going to have a dark atmosphere, simply due to the inability for the vampires in this universe to go out in sunlight (it’s instantly fatal). Despite that, and the static backgrounds, Coteries of New York is still as varied as the city it’s set in. I was still seeing new backgrounds used multiple hours into the story, though there were still cases of reuse here and there. The characters each have their own unique style, befitting the various tribes of vampires and even humans that some of them represent. The background music isn’t all that noticeable except for the stings at dramatic moments, which certainly got my attention when trouble started. It does make a good, if confusing (for my roommate) podcast game.

I suspect once the text skipping patch is live, that’ll be what draws me back into the Masquerade. It’s still an intriguing world, and it’ll help me to see more of it once I can get past the redundancy quicker. If you like darkness and blood in your visual novels, take a bite out of Coteries of New York.
