TalkBack / Code: Realize -Future Blessing- (Switch) Review FAQ
« on: April 23, 2020, 06:00:00 AM »

A game with an awful lot of "now what?".

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/reviewmini/53566/code-realize-future-blessing-switch-review-faq

So, uh, why are you borrowing Zach’s format for this review?

Because this isn’t a typical game to review, so a quick-fire format works better.

Let’s see it then. What’s the deal with this release?

Code:Realize -Future Blessing- is what’s usually referred to as a “fan disc” for visual novels. It’s a collection of short stories set after February’s Code: Realize -Guardian of Rebirth-, so if you’re jumping in without having already played that game… go back and play the original first.

What do you mean by “short stories”?

The original game had five stories, one with each of the suitors, and multiple choices. Although this game has eight such stories, six of them have absolutely no choices to make at all. If I wanted to compare it to something recognizable, I’d say a short story or novella compilation like “Different Seasons” by Stephen King (as Richard Bachman).

Back up a second - there’s no interaction at all?

For six of them, yes. Five of them serve as post-script stories for each of Guardian of Rebirth’s suitor endings, and there’s one story set in the first half that tries to give the heroine Cardia a friend of her age (or maturity) level. These ones are straight novels: no choices. There are two stories that offer choices, which provide a suitor ending for a prominent antagonist of the first game and a… I’m not quite sure how to describe the other one given whom it involves.

I see. Is the writing up to the standard of the first game?

Quite so, though by necessity the postscript stories are longer due to having to explain things from the suitor’s perspective as well as Cardia’s. I also didn’t notice as many text errors as the original had, just one additional letter in an odd spot that can probably be chalked up to a localization error in the original. (See below.)

Your other problems with the original were the first guy not winning and the sound mix, though there was a mention of background re-use. How do they handle it now?

The “first guy” problem is alleviated by the story not picking up from a fixed point, so that’s not a concern now. I didn’t have any problems with the sound mixing either, and there are enough new backgrounds that it wasn’t really noticeable. Future Blessings does a good job of fixing the technical issues the original game had. Impey’s still a bit overbearing, though.

So overall, it’s a solid package, but not good as a jumping-in point.

Precisely.

The old Nintendo Network may be to blame for this one.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53561/nintendo-accounts-possibly-breached-recommendation-to-turn-on-two-factor-authentication

There is an imminent security threat for Nintendo accounts, and all holders are advised to turn on two-factor authentication to counter it.

Multiple reports of Nintendo accounts having multiple hundreds of dollars in downloadable content purchases - usually Fortnite V-Bucks - have emerged in recent days, and a writer for technology website Ars Technica reported it yesterday. Nintendo responded to Ars today, stating they are aware of the reports and recommending 2 factor authentication, and providing a process for recovering compromised accounts. Although not confirmed - Nintendo is not commenting on the root cause - it is suspected that people were able to gain access through an exploit targeting the old Nintendo Network ID system.

The 2 factor authentication is done by way of a smartphone application, such as Google Authenticator, though applications such as Microsoft's authenticator or Twilio's Authy can also work. There are also guides for using Google or other authenticators on PCs. A smartphone application is recommended for 2-factor in order to prevent potential hijacking of a text messages.

TalkBack / Nintendo Sales Party: March 2020 US NPD Group Results
« on: April 21, 2020, 02:28:00 AM »

The numbers are, quite literally, historic.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53559/nintendo-sales-party-march-2020-us-npd-group-results

The stars aligned for one of Nintendo's biggest months of US sales in years for March.

All data is based on dollar sales for the period of March 1 to April 4, unless otherwise noted.

The Switch was the highest selling console of March, as hardware sales jumped 63% compared to last year for all platforms. The Switch's March month sales outsold its launch month (the highest March in the system's history), and more than doubled over the same period in 2019.

In software, Animal Crossing: New Horizons dominated the charts in March, becoming the third best selling Nintendo exclusive ever in its launch month behind Smash Bros Ultimate (Dec 2018) and Smash Bros Brawl (March 2008). This sets an upper bound for AC physical sales of 2.7 million copies. It is instantly the biggest moneymaking Animal Crossing game ever (due to a $59.99 MSRP) and the second best selling game of the year.

Other Nintendo software in the overall top 20 include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (10th), Super Smash Bros Ultimate (14th), and debutant Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX (15th): The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild missed the top 20 for only the second time in three full years of release. Third party games NBA 2k20 (5th), FIFA 20 (13th), Just Dance 2020 (17th), and Mortal Kombat 11 (19th) are also in the top 20.

The top 10 Switch games by sales are as follows:

  1. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  3. Super Smash Bros Ultimate
  4. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX
  5. Just Dance 2020
  6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  7. Super Mario Party
  8. Luigi's Mansion 3
  9. New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe
  10. Pokémon Sword

Super Mario Maker 2 will drop its final update in a couple of days with some long-requested features.

Mario 3D World will get five new block sets; a cannon block, a helicopter block, a POW block, a Goomba suit (for stealth sections) and a Bullet Bill block. The Koopalings, with their unique powers, will also be an option for bosses.
  • New course elements include a "Cursed Key" (summons Phanto), "on-off trampolines", and Mechakoopas with the ability to fire beams and have jet propulsion at night.
  • A World Maker will allow for the creation of self-made Mario games via Course World. Up to eight worlds with different themes can be created, with a total of 40 playable levels insertable and full map customization.

The update is slated to launch on April 22 (US time).

Western audiences will get a dose of J-pop rhythm in mid-May.

(Mi-ku is one translation of the number 39 in Japanese, according to Sega.)

100 songs will be included in the base game, as well as customization for Miku and the other Vocaloids who perform in the music video. Pre-loading the game offers early access to a "Theme Song Pack" that will be available at no cost to everyone on June 12.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - April 23, 2020

The main trial this week has my wallet on the stand.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53527/nintendo-downloads-april-23-2020

The big game in terms of attention this week is Square Enix's only relevant RPG remake this month in Trials of Mana, obviously. Anime World Report is thriving however, as Naruto Shippuden UNS4 and Code: Realize ~Future Blessings~ come out, as well as two visual novel imports from Japan in the Yumeutsutsu series - one of which is the most expensive basic game I think we've had in this column on Switch? And I've got Little Busters on the old wishlist as well.

The other dominant theme this week is the number 4. Aside from the fourth Shippuden game, we get coding app SmileBasic 4 and Picross S4 (plus a sale on the first 3... it's 20% off, but baby steps especially since it carries over save data to 4). Throw in ITTA and Sunless Sea, and I could use another fat tax return right about now.

Japan has their last big week for a while as the combination of COVID closures and the impending Golden Week means they need to run it out now.

Crytek is bringing the game that made it famous to modern consoles including the Switch, and they've brought in a strong team to make sure it runs well.

Crysis Remastered, a modern update of the 2007 first person shooter, has been announced for all platforms with a target release of this summer. The remastering will be done by Saber Interactive, who previously brought The Witcher 3 to Switch.

The futuristic shooter was known for straining the limits of PCs at launch, with "Can it run Crysis?" being a common refrain for years afterward. The remaster promises new light settings, motion blur, and textures.

Calling this "creative differences" would be a gross understatement.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53484/cooking-mama-series-owner-and-cookstar-publisher-issue-statements-on-new-game

The recently released (and pulled from the eShop) Cooking Mama: Cookstar has attracted statements from both the creator and owner of the Cooking Mama series and the publisher of Cookstar regarding the game's status.

Office Create, the Cooking Mama series owner, issued the first statement overnight on their website. In it, the company states that the game shipped without their approval and with "a wide range of deficiencies affecting the overall feel, quality and content of the game", which Planet Entertainment (Cookstar's publisher) was allegedly contractually obligated to submit for approval before releasing. Office Create also stated that Planet was planning an unapproved release on the PlayStation 4.

Planet Entertainment issued a statement on the Cookstar Twitter account in response, which states in part "Unfortunately, creative differences arose as Cooking Mama: Cookstar was near completion that were outside the scope of our agreement and the game design approved by Office Create".

Although Cookstar has yet to return to the eShop following its quick release and pulling on March 26, the game is still listed as being sold directly on the game's website for US $39.99 (as of press time, it is sold out). Nintendo World Report's review gave the game a 4.5.

I think we all know who will have a comment on this Sunday...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53482/bravely-second-scenario-writer-apologizes-for-not-meeting-expectations-in-famitsu-interview

One of the Bravely series's producers has apologized publicly for Bravely Second in a recent magazine interview.

In the interview, which ran in this week's Famitsu magazine (translation provided by Japanese Nintendo), producer Tomoya Asano expressed regret that the 2016 3DS title didn't live up to fan expectations.

"Before I talk about the title name in more detail, first of all please allow me to apologise about Bravely Second. Despite receiving a lot of expectations for Bravely Second, we feel like there were parts that didn’t live up to all fans’ expectations. The introspection from Bravely Second has taken a deep, strong root in production for all titles being worked on by our team right now." - Asano

The interview also confirms that the name "Bravely Default II" was given to the upcoming Switch release because of the fan feedback about Bravely Second, as opposed to calling the new game "Bravely Third" or a variant.

Quick question on that thought.... If I had 2 Switches, and bought a digital copy of a game... could I download that same digital copy on to both switches and play with/against each other online?

I tried to trade with "myself" using Pokemon Sword (and this was local) and it didn't work. Plus, whichever system is the primary would kick the other one offline when it signed in.

...and of course, stability. But no folders.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53471/switch-system-100-adds-button-remapping-ability-to-move-software

A new version of the Switch's system software has added a couple of highly demanded features.

Version 10.0 can now be downloaded to the Switch and Switch Lite. Among the new features:

  • The ability to copy games/DLC/updates to the system memory or SD card depending on what is necessary. In a test, a 12.5GB file took approximately 7 minutes to move from a high-speed SD card to the Switch (rev 2)'s memory.
  • System level button remapping for official Nintendo controllers (the Joy-Cons and the Pro Controller). This includes analog stick and button configurations, as well as the buttons on the Lite.
  • The Display Play Activity setting has been moved to a new menu called "Play Activity Settings". Currently, the options allow for limiting the display of public play data, or deleting all history.
  • Inidividual news items can now be bookmarked.
  • New icons (Animal Crossing; New Horizons themed).
  • "General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience."

TalkBack / Rick May: 1940 - 2020
« on: April 13, 2020, 12:34:14 PM »

If you don't know the name, you definitely know the voice.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53470/rick-may-1940-2020

The Covid-19 epidemic has claimed the life of the voice of one of the most famous quotes in Nintendo history.

Rick May, whose extensive voice work included the twin roles of Peppy Hare and Andross in Star Fox 64, passed away last week from complications of the virus. He was 79, and recently was recovering from a heart attack and fighting cancer as well.

The news was first posted by his co-star on The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes radio show Larry Albert, who worked alongside May's Inspector Lestrade in the long running radio series. May's other gaming voice work is limited, though he was the voice of the Soldier in 2007's Team Fortress 2.

And then we take a walk down the Billion Road.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53466/nintendo-downloads-april-16-2020

The schedule is starting to slow down a bit given the current circumstances: there doesn't seem to be anything coming out at retail this week. The big release in terms of price is The Fox Awaits Me, though perhaps the most exciting game is Japanese-focused board game Billion Road. We get another nonogram-plus-other-genre game as well with Piczle Cross Adventure, or a western (themed) 2D RPG with Boot Hill Bounties.

If there's a word to sum up this week it's "weird". We have a dating sim starting the octogenarian set (Later Daters), and a possibly offensive-sounding game in Save Your Nuts. The Arcade Archives game of the week is TBA, and may be delayed due to the closure of the CERO ratings office in Japan until further notice as apparently Japan is just hearing about the concept of having meetings online.
