TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - May 14, 2020
« on: May 14, 2020, 01:05:00 PM »

Please blame the following for the late posting: The PGA Tour, 2K, Nintendo, Bethesda, and my IRL employer.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53734/nintendo-downloads-may-14-2020

This week's big, BIG release is the creation of the Garreg Mach Knights in Super Mega Baseball 3, a game that might win this site's GotY by default when I stage a bloodless coup. (Though Neal might back me up on this, based on his review.) Other big things this week: the shock shadowdrop of Elder Scrolls Blades we discussed earlier today, Minecraft creator Hatsune Miku's latest jump into the rhythm genre comes west, and 3D Realms actually finishing a console game for the first time since I was still in university.

Some smaller things worth keeping an eye on: Oddworld Munch's Oddysee if only to justify the fits it gives my spellcheck, Jet Lancer is the first game I ever sold someone on reviewing by posting a GIF in a chatroom, and Huntdown has been getting buzz in certain quarters as a quality shooter. Your obligatory Hamster release is 1982 Nichibutsu shooter Radical Radial.

Japan gets Tennis and a Sega ACA game (Thunder Force AC) that you won't have to wait long to import: it comes out outside Japan on the 28th.

Looks like mind tricks AND money won't work to start the race tomorrow.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53687/star-wars-episode-i-racer-switch-release-delayed-at-last-moment

One of this week's hyped releases has had to pull into the pits right before its green flag.

Aspyr Media have had to delay the release of Star Wars: Episode I Racer that was originally slated for tomorrow (May 12). Delays in adjusting to work from home are being cited for the delay.

No release date has been given for the remake of the 1999 racing classic.

If you're looking for Star Wars day, that was yesterday on the revenge of the 5th.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53677/nintendo-downloads-may-7-2020

It's an interesting week for the eShop if only because of some of the games up for grabs. The headliner is the Indie MIX published Jay and Silent Bob-themed NES brawler Mall Brawl, just because who would have expected a Jay and Silent Bob licensed game in 2020? There's also the evil-sounding Void Bastards if you need a bit more of a slower pace, the game mashup (literally) SuperMash, and serene bike rider Lonely Mountains: Downhill.

The Spaceballs spinoff game comes next week, but the Archives provide a little bit of sci-fi today with Magmax. More people are probably familiar with it in the NES version, however.

Japan's got a typical week - surprising for the end of Golden Week - with a VN, a few late drops, and some piecemeal ArcSys games.

So much money Nintendo could probably buy an island.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53671/nintendo-releases-fiscal-year-earnings-and-guidance-for-next-year

Nintendo issued their full year financial results for the period of April 1, 2019 -> March 31, 2020 overnight, with some big numbers for the company admist the COVID-19 pandemic.

All numbers reported in yen: a rounded comparison based on an exchange rate of 106.571 yen to the US$ is provided for clarification only.

Financial Indicators

Revenue: ¥1,308,519,000,000 ($12.278b) for the year, ¥285,851m ($2.682b) of which was in the 4th quarter.

Operating income: ¥352,370m ($3.306b) for the year, ¥89,440m ($839m) for Q4.

Ordinary income: ¥360,461m ($3.382b) for the year, ¥86.620m ($812m) for Q4.

Digital sales: ¥204.1b ($1.915b) for the year, ¥79,200 ($743m) for Q4.

Mobile/IP revenue: ¥51.2b ($480m) for the year, ¥14.300b ($134m) for Q4.

Hardware Sales

Switch: 3.29m units shipped in the quarter, new LTD total is 55.77m. 21.03m units were shipped during the fiscal year. Switch is now 6.14m units away from passing the Famicom/NES for second place among Nintendo home consoles.

3DS: 60,000 units shipped in the quarter, new LTD 75.77m. Notably, Nintendo is not providing a forecast for 3DS sales (see below).

Software Highlights

The past quarter saw the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which shipped (to retail + sold digitally) 11.77m copies in the eleven days left in the fiscal year following its March 20 launch. Due to COVID-19 restrictions Nintendo confirmed in a follow-up call that the game's sales were now 13.41m units, making it the best selling game in the series after about a month and a half.

The quarter's other major debut was Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX, which shipped 1.26m copies following the March 6 launch.

For catalogue titles: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe shipped 1.81m copies in the quarter for a new LTD of 24.77m. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate added 1.16m copies (18.84m LTD), Pokémon Sword and Shield 1.31m copies (17.37m), Breath of the Wild on Switch 1.07m copies (17.41m), Super Mario Odyssey 820,000 copies (17.41m), and the perpetually-out-of-stock Ring Fit Adventure managed to ship 560,000 copies (LTD 2.73m). Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Party both crossed the 10m shipment mark this quarter.

Projections

Due to the pandemic disrupting operations, Nintendo is projecting revenue of ¥1,200b yen, operating profit of ¥300m yen, and net profit of ¥200m yen for the coming fiscal year. The only platform to receive projections for 2020-21 is the Switch, with projected hardware sales of 19m units and software sales of 140m (compared to 21.03m and 168.72m of each for the prior year).

The only announced new software for the coming year is Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Games, two Famicom Detective Club games (JP only), and Bravely Default II (rest of world only). Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4, and the sequel to Breath of the Wild are still "TBA". The Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass, the second Fighter's Pass for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons updates are also planned.

Nintendo did not give an indication as to when additional announcements would be made for new releases beyond this quarter, citing disruption to the work both in Japan and with overseas partners.

Regarding the disc change in FF7: after leaving Midgar there's 5 or 6 dungeons and three MAJOR cutscenes before you have to change discs. It's probably 10-15 hours of gameplay when Midgar is 2-3.

TalkBack / New Information Emerges On Indivisible Switch Release
« on: April 28, 2020, 01:01:04 PM »

If you ever wondered what it's like to play a game WITHOUT the day 1 patch...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53616/new-information-emerges-on-indivisible-switch-release

New information has emerged from Lab Zero Games and publisher 505 Games following this morning's surprise launch of Indivisible.

505 have confirmed to USGamer that the game's launch was originally going to be in early May, with copies for backers of the game's Indiegogo campaign set to receive codes or physical copies as soon as possible. An update, originally intended as a day 1 patch, will be made available soon to solve performance problems and unlock the character Roti.

The co-op mode and New Game+ option will be brought to Switch in a separate update available later, according to Lab Zero project lead Mike Zaimont:

The 20% launch discount is also valid in Europe.

TalkBack / Latin American "Limited eShops" To Close On July 31
« on: April 28, 2020, 12:49:45 PM »

Maybe the Turks and Caicos should have pushed a bit harder to join Canada, eh.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53615/latin-american-limited-eshops-to-close-on-july-31

eShops for 3DS and Wii U will be closing in most of Latin America this summer, preventing new downloads as well as redownloading old ones.

The eShops in the affected countries on 3DS and Wii U had "limited support", which means codes could be redeemed if purchased and software could be redownloaded, These eShops did not support direct purchase. Nintendo's support article on the subject cites "a variety of factors", as well as confirms that use of codes and downloading game updates/redownloading software will not work after July 31.

Mexico and Brazil are cited as two countries not affected, as Mexico has full eShop access for 3DS and Wii U while Brazil has full functionality on 3DS. The countries / territories affected are: Anguilla, Antigua/Barbuda, Argentina, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Bolivia, Cayman Islands, Chile, Colombia, Cost Rica, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent/Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Uruguay, Venezuela, and both the US and British Virgin Islands.

TalkBack / Ion Fury To Blast Onto Switch May 14
« on: April 28, 2020, 03:30:47 AM »

From the makers of Duke Nukem Forever... wait, why are you laughing?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53613/ion-fury-to-blast-onto-switch-may-14

A controversial first person shooter from the makers of multiple genre classics will make its console debut in a couple of weeks.

Ion Fury, the first shipping game from 3D Realms to reach consoles without intervention since 2006's Prey, will be available on Switch May 14 for US$24.99. A preload discount will also be available, and a physical version will be available from the game's website or in stores in PAL regions at the end of June.

Originally known as Iron Maiden before the metal band threatened legal action, Ion Fury attracted negative attention following the game's PC launch for the inclusion of transphobic content.

Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing In Disguise will launch on Switch July 10 for $49.99 US, both digitally and physically. Set partially in Boston, the game claims to be a sequel and prequel to the original game.

The original game is currently on sale for 50% off in North America to celebrate.

TalkBack / Indivisible Shadow Dropped Onto eShop Overnight
« on: April 28, 2020, 12:05:00 AM »

The crowdfunded RPG is coming with a bit of a discount, but some caveats. (UPDATED)

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53610/indivisible-shadow-dropped-onto-eshop-overnight

It turns out 505 Games will have two Switch releases this week.

Indivisible, the RPG developed by Lab Zero Games (Skullgirls) has appeared on the Switch eShop with no prior announcement of a release date. The price is US$23.99 after a 20% discount that expires May 12, for a regular price of $29.99.

Crowdfunded via Indiegogo, Indivisble combines action RPG combat and platforming with a combo system. It will require 3.63GB of Switch memory.

UPDATE: Even the team at Lab Zero was surprised by the release, as there was no promotion of the launch and the game is missing features such as co-op and New Game+. It appears to be based on an older version of the game per one of Lab Zero's lead developers.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53607/snk-gals-fighters-launching-on-switch-wednesday

SNK is observing the 30th anniversary of the Neo Geo with a special release of a classic portable fighter.

SNK Gals' Fighters, a 2000 Neo Geo Pocket Color fighting game, will be made available on the Switch eShop this Wednesday (April 29). This is the second NGPC game to be made available on Switch following a preorder bonus of Samurai Shodown II to coincide with the launch of the modern reboot in February.

The portable fighter features eight characters by default and two hidden characters, who are fighting in the Queen of Fighters tournament. 2018's SNK Heroines is considered a spiritual successor to this game.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - April 30, 2020

Telling lies and moving out - I'll be doing one of those this week.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53597/nintendo-downloads-april-30-2020

The big release is a three way fight this week: there's arguments for Moving Out (the speed-based moving simulator with apparently a very liberal damage waiver), Streets of Rage 4 (the Wonder Boy: The Dragons' Trap devs tackle belt action with Sega's permission), or Telling Lies (FMV/adventure maestro Sam Barlow's console debut).

Other things worth keeping an eye on: Levelhead dates back to the second indie showcase of 2018, Star Crossed was intriguing at PAX (Pong with waifus?), Dread Nautical is another RPG from Zen Studios who did well with Operencia, and Ministry of Broadcast is a bit dystopic. No Hamster ACA release has been announced as of Monday, but we do have a Archives release with Sega's G-Loc Air Battle. Also, Splatoon 2 has an extended demo if you're in one of the (checks) 80% of Switch owners who haven't bought it.

Japan gets a hanafuda game and a "talking RPG" called Gnosia this week.

TalkBack / Treachery In Beatdown City (Switch) Review
« on: April 26, 2020, 12:34:44 PM »

Not quite LE CHAMPION, but it’s got a couple of points toward the Young Lions Cup.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/53600/treachery-in-beatdown-city-switch-review

It’s possible to tell a lot about a game developer by the elements they include in their games. NuChallenger, the three-person creative team behind Treachery in Beatdown City, are clearly fans of late 80s/early 90s pixel brawlers, RPGs, and the art of pro wrestling. What they’ve poured that love into is a solid Switch game with a bit of a learning curve and almost too many references.

Beatdown City, aka East Fulton, is home to a wildly multicultural population of people who fight at the drop of a hat and don’t discriminate on gender. The game sees you control three characters: the quick, strike focused Jamacian-American Bruce, the balanced police chief’s daughter Lisa, and community organizer/inactive heavyweight wrestler Brad. And stop me if this sounds familiar at the start of the game: President Orama has been kidnapped. By ninjas. It originally appears that he has been kidnapped by people connected to corrupt mayor Mike Moneybags (who illegally got a fourth term), but it turns out to have been perpetrated by the “Ninja Dragons.” The game’s original concept was written in 2009, which explains a lot of the references like the mook who makes frequent references to “Steiner Math.” Another mook refers to former wrestling world champion/UFC also-ran CM Punk, while the save points are a food truck called “Farooq’s Damn Halal.” Since the game was also Kickstarted with a funding level of “design an enemy” it’s mandatory to beat up Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopoulos (or a facsimile thereof) during the story. And yes, someone does drop a “Thanks, Orama” at one point, which was about the point where the references moved from cute to eye-roll inducing.

Here, Lisa has three moves to throw.

When not dealing with the story, the game provides a hybrid of RPG combat and brawling. The trio of characters move across an overhead map, and run into various modern annoyances—hipsters, tech bros who are also bikers for some reason, and crooked cops all show up early on—who need to be beaten in order to continue through the city. Combat is from a side view reminiscent of Double Dragon, but the basic attacks won’t last long. The chosen—or in some story scenes, forced—character and the enemies have an HP bar that needs to be worn down through combos. The combos themselves run off two meters: the length is determined by a cooldown meter that restores somewhat quickly, and the available attacks use a “FP” count that starts relatively low but can be boosted by getting extra hits in the combos or knocking down the enemy. Defending can use a portion of the cooldown meter to attempt to counter the attack (lower chance) or FP to try and reduce the damage (higher but not guaranteed) chances. The named attacks are divided between strikes and grapples, which can have their accuracy modified by attacks and status conditions including the RPG standby of “Blind.” Enemies often focus on countering one type of attack, which led to me relying on strikes a lot early before transitioning to grapples with Brad and Lisa during the mid-game and not using Bruce as much.

Figuring out which attacks work on characters can be frustrating when you lose the coin flip, and there were times it would take two or three losses before I would figure out a combat technique that would defeat the enemies. There isn’t traditional leveling either; only by beating a stage did the characters get a few extra FP or hit points, and I don’t recall ever getting both. There are plenty of food trucks on the maps for saving, but it’ll be necessary to watch the HP of the characters since most enemies after the first world are usually good for lopping off 30-40% of a character’s max HP. Add in the “grudge matches” that force a character in, and it leads to a lot of burning of healing items.

Hey man, you got any halal poutine?

East Fulton is as multicultural as the New York City it’s based on, which lends itself to a wide variety of character designs. Thankfully, Beatdown City doesn’t disappoint on this mark, presenting at least thirty different types of enemies to get Brainbustered or repeatedly punched in the face. There are some neat sight gags in the battle backgrounds, as well. The music is a solid chiptune sound that would fit right in on the Super Nintendo. Originally the game as shipped was experiencing some issues with freezing and loading anything beyond the first map if the game was on a microSD card, but the version we reviewed (version 1.0.1) didn’t have either of these bugs, so it’s good to go technically.

If you’re down with all sorts of in-jokes and spent way too much time online in the late 2000s, you probably already picked up Treachery in Beatdown City. If you’re still on the fence, it’s a brisk experience with a unique style of gameplay, and the dialogue is as skippable as you need it to be. It’s a good debut game from a studio I’ll be keeping an eye on going forward.

TalkBack / SuperMash Builds May 8 Release Date
« on: April 24, 2020, 03:00:00 AM »

The staff has a bit of a pedigree when it comes to building things.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53581/supermash-builds-may-8-release-date

One of the game announced in December's Indie World has its release date ready to go.

SuperMash, the random game mashup simulator, will release on Switch May 8 for US$19.99. Players will mash together 2D game styles such as JRPG, platformer, and scrolling shooter to try and satisfy the demands of a video game store's customers.

The developer, Digital Continue, was partially founded by one of the founders of Scribblenauts and Lock's Quest creators 5th Cell.

If you were affected, illegal purchases will be immediately cancelled. (UPDATING)

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/53580/nintendo-confirms-breach-of-accounts-using-nintendo-network-id-has-disabled-login

Nintendo has confirmed the number of accounts affected by a recent breach and has begun mitigation steps.

According to Nintendo, more than 160,000 accounts were affected by the breach of the Nintendo Network ID service. Nintendo Network ID login has been disabled, and affected users will have forced password resets for both their NNIDs and Nintendo Accounts. Users are encouraged to use new passwords and enable the 2-factor authentication on their Nintendo accounts.

The company has encouraged any users who had "illegal"/unauthorized purchases made on their accounts to contact them for cancellation. Currently, the breach is being quoted as beginning earlier this month.

Although the breach did not expose credit card information directly, user dates of birth and emails were accessible and full names were potentially accessible if one was applied.

Nintendo of Europe has posted a similar statement on their support pages. Notably, the statement denies that Nintendo's systems were breached.

Fun fact: Once I had 2FA set up with my Nintendo account I went and set it up with a bunch of other things too, including the other game systems, and Sony's PSN only supports 2FA via text message.

This was a real irritant when I had to change my phone number last summer, but it was honestly worse that my bank also uses SMS for 2FA.
