I poked Louie with my plunger and got him to update the colors spec. 262 colors...that's just absurd!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm right on that color number: see that 6:6:6 label? That means six bits for each color channel.

2^6 * 2^6 * 2^6 = 262144! Huzzah!

I'm of the opinion that it can display Two-hundred fifty-two thousand, one hundred and forty-four colors simultaniously, not "262 and 144." Also note the familiar 4:3 screen size.

Why should thrid parties feel the urge to mold another company's console when they feel it isn't worth the financial risk? I don't blame them either. Nintendo should just focus on tis NEXT system's image and support (including holding off some important titles if needed), and do its best to keep its current userbase happy. From Nintendo's behavior, that is either their plan, or they don't care about garnering more widespread thrid party support.

TalkBack / Nintendo Sued, Settles Seizure Case
« on: March 08, 2004, 07:55:13 PM »
Hearings continue on whether Nintendo of America must change its policies on preventing seizures.

Last July St. Martinville Mayor Eric Martin brought Nintendo of America to federal court after his son had a seizure, which he claims was triggered by a Nintendo game. According to the family’s claims, Nintendo’s current labels do not adequately warn consumers of the potential dangers of playing their games.

Hearings on the law suit continued last month, until Nintendo settled for an undisclosed amount after the third day in front of a jury. During the hearing Nintendo acknowledged that certain patterns of light can cause epileptic seizures in a small percentage of the population, and pointed out its investment into the study of epilepsy, both internally and through the funding of independent studies. Nintendo also pointed out that it follows voluntary guidelines instituted in 1999 that have effectively reduced seizures, including the frequency and intensity of lights in its games. The company also stated its opinion that epileptic seizures are caused by a pre-existing susceptibility, not a videogame.

Although the bulk of the trial ended Thursday, another professional witness on epilepsy will give his testimony later this month. Following the final transcript’s completion, Judge Richard Haik will give Nintendo and Martin’s lawyers 45 days to complete and file their arguments based on the evidence and Federal law.

The judge will then determine whether Nintendo can be held accountable for the uncommon videogame-related seizure. The biggest question of debate is whether Nintendo’s precautions and preventative steps are enough, according to law, to make the company legally irresponsible for the rare videogame-induced epileptic seizure.

If Judge Haik finds Nintendo guilty of not providing reasonable warning to its consumers, the videogame giant may have to change one or more of its policies. The plaintiff has submitted some very significant demands to the judge, including warnings in-game, reformatting all games to reduce risk, a seizure-threat ranking system, and a trade-back/refund system for those who don’t want their highly-rated games anymore.

« on: March 07, 2004, 11:09:09 PM »
I think what most of you are trying to get at is that Nintendo needs more *exclusive* 3rd party games. EXCLUISVE titles--not just first party titles--define a console's personality and target userbase. But how can Nintendo get more exclusives, short of providing its own franchises and development teams? That's what the company itself is trying to figure out...Jonny's right: Nintendo needs to set the example.

However, I strongly disagree with the suggestion that Nintendo pump out crummy games--as others have said, it would just damage its own reputation among followers.
Nintendo needs to hunt down more budding third parties that develop "non-Nintendo" games. Silicon Knights, Retro Studios and N-space (remember Geist, anyone?) are a good start, but Nintendo needs to get more serious about the matter. Microsoft went on a feeding-frenzy before the Xbox launched, and Nintendo needs to do the same. Nintendo *is* doing this, but too slowly. Nintendo can't afford to fully buy-out development teams, and doesn't seem keen on owning more 2nd parties, but it can still build tight relationships with small developers like Camelot. I'm skeptical of what will come from FF:CC and MGS:TS; it needs to put its full weight behind partners like Alpha Dream and NOISE but, more importantly, DIVERSIFY their partners' images and game styles.

Of course, there's always the problem of getting consumers and 3rd parties to notice these exclusive games...and that requires BURNING money on promotions. Nintendo doesn't like that. ED and Metroid Prime didn't seem to change anyone's perceptions of the GameCube, largely becasue Nintendo wanted to make a profit.

edit P.S.: If Nintendo wanted to promote a more diverse image without abusing money, a console launch promotional campaign would be the perfect outlet... Nintendo loves killing two goombas with one fireball.

TalkBack / Skies of Arcadia Legends Re-release in Japan
« on: March 05, 2004, 12:39:06 PM »
As they say, the third time's the charm!

In the year 2000, Overworks and Sega released Skies of Arcadia, a critically acclaimed traditional RPG, for the Dreamcast. The title sold less than expected on Sega’s faltering system, and, confident in the game’s quality, the companies brought an extended version of the game to the GameCube early last year. Unfortunately, Skies of Arcadia Legends (known as Eternal Arcadia Legends in Japan) suffered from the same lackluster performance in stores as its older Dreamcast brother and remained largely unappreciated.

In spite of poor sales around the world, Sega and Overworks (now part of Sega Wow) refuse to give up. Sega is releasing an “inexpensive version” of their cult classic in Japan for the low, low price of 2,800 yen (around $25 USD) on May 20.

The development team has previously expressed interest in continuing the Skies of Arcadia saga, citing poor sales as their only major deterrant. A successful re-release of the GameCube title could be the green light Sega Wow has been waiting for.

TalkBack / RE:Gossip from DICE
« on: March 05, 2004, 09:11:13 AM »
I've said it during Radio Trivia and I'll say it again: Nintendo should continue the pattern of using a new developer with each Mario RPG. All three share some aspects, but overall all three stand on their own and are excellent in their own right. Each developer brings its own personality and talents to the table, and I love the individuality in the "series". Nintendo has a horde of developers to work with--surely more than a few would be interested in a Mario RPG.

That being said, I wouldn't be upset if Alpha Dream or Square made the next Mario RPG, but I'm secretly crossing my fingers for the Skies of Arcadia team ;-)

TalkBack / New Game Boy Advance SP Color for Spain
« on: March 04, 2004, 01:31:12 PM »
Nintendo of Europe discovers girls love Game Boy Advance, and decides to do something about it-—at least in Spain.

Nintendo has long claimed girls make up a large percentage of its handheld market. Today, NOE’s Spanish division posted a press release revealing its plans to further tap into the female market. It seems NOE is especially confident of the market potential in Spain, and aims to prove its point with Game Boy Advance SP, dubbed the GBA SP GE.

The GBA SP GE is, in actuality, no more than a new metallic pink color, but Nintendo is aiming the color at the ladies with a new marketing campaign promoting the SP’s stylishly small and easily transportable design. The SP GE’s boxart features artistically drawn girls with GBA SP GE systems.

GBA SP Girl Edition - SP is for Spain

The new metallic will be released exclusively in Spain on April 1st.

TalkBack / RE:DS Video Playback?
« on: March 03, 2004, 07:37:16 PM »
Yes, the DS media is much cheaper than cartridges. I'd be impressed if Nintendo & publishers didn't keep the same $30 price and went for a bigger profit margin. At least that means Nintendo doesn't anticipate production costs to skyrocket with the DS, as I fear will happen with the PSP.

2895
Well, it seems nobody cares about my poor GameCube, but I figured I would follow up anyways for future readers. NCS has fixed my system--it WAS a fuse--and has shipped it back my way UPS. I'll post here again if any complications arise, but I very much trust them and would recommend them to anyone who can't get their system repaired under warranty.

nintendo started production up again a long time ago.

He is exactly right. Nintendo continued production well in time for the holiday season last year. Perhaps I should have made that clear in the news post. Nintendo probably slowed production after the holiday season and are now caught off guard--I see no reason why they would intentionally want retailers out of stock. A store out of GameCubes usually means more parental PS2/Xbox purchases.

Wowsers! North American GameCubes in short supply?

In an interesting turn of events, Nintendo of America today stated that its reservoir of GameCube consoles has nearly run dry. Nintendo news hounds may remember a time when Nintendo discontinued their console’s production in order to clear a backlog of unsold systems. It seems last year’s price cut certainly did the trick! NOA is now looking to acquire more units from international waters.

Store shelves are just running very dry," Nintendo spokeswoman Perrin Kaplan told Reuters. "I'd say about 50 percent of our stores are out."

Perrin assured Reuters that Nintendo has brought its manufacturing plant in Japan to full capacity to meet the demand in North America.

TalkBack / Nintendo DS Interview
« on: January 21, 2004, 01:07:13 PM »
Game Informer Online discusses Nintendo’s recent announcement with Beth Llewelyn.

Following yesterday’s intriguing revelation of the Nintendo DS, the Nintendo's rumored “third pillar” platform, Billy Berghammer of Game Informer Online talked with Beth Llewelyn, NOA’s Director of Public Relations. The interview reveals a handful of new tidbits along with clarification on what the system is and why it exists. Below are a few highlights:

Billy: Will the unit be backwards compatible with the Game Boy Advance or the Game Boy?

Beth: We haven’t announced anything about that, yet.

Billy: I also read that developers can use both screens as one if they so choose.

Beth: Yes, you can use the two screens as one big monitor. I think it’s one of those things that the developer will have the freedom to do what they want to do.

Billy: Will the screens be side-by-side, or vertical? Also, will the screens be set right next to each other or will they be separate, much like the classic Game & Watch designs?

Beth: The[y] will be in the vertical position.
Beth also confirmed that DS cartridges can store up to 1 Gigabit, or 128 Megabytes, of information, and that the hardware and its 1st and 3rd party software will be fully revealed at E3 2004. She neither confirmed nor denied the possibility of backwards compatibility with Game Boy games. To read more about Nintendo’s philosophy behind the system and why it was announced so early in the year, be sure to check out Game Informer’s full interview!
