Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 379: RFN After Hours
« on: April 24, 2014, 02:35:25 AM »
I'm actually fairly pleased with the first party lineup thus far for Wii U. It's really the lack of horsepower / x64 architecture that bit them in the butt--third parties aren't interested in porting and many gamers would rather get one of the more powerful consoles, all things considered. Unfortunately Nintendo can't charge what MS is charging for XBone due to their desire to be family/budget friendly, so they chose their Gamepad over incremental power. I understand why they did that, but they rolled the dice and got snake eyes on their come-out roll.

Did you like this episode's game selections? Let your fellow listeners know in TalkBack! Think you've got a better choice? Then send it my way and your request might be on the next episode of Radio Trivia: Podcast Edition!  Heck, throw in a question and specific songs if you want.  Just remember, it has to be a game found on a Nintendo system in North America (unless we say otherwise)!

You can learn more about Seven Rodriguez's favorite sport at his blog on Roller Derbies. You can also learn more about fellow Planet GameCube / NWR staff alumnus Adam Kontras' charity event and video web series on the official GolfKon website.

Games featured in this episode:

  1. We Love Golf (Wii)
  2. Mr. Chin's Gourmet Paradise (GB)
  3. Hagane: The Final Conflict (SNES)
  4. San Francisco Rush 2049 (N64)
  5. Rollergames (NES)

Thanks for the very interesting review, Becky. I'm fascinated that this was released in the west, especially since apparently it doesn't have much going for it beyond its novelty value.

Oooh, Ninja Five-O would be a geat pick, K-S-O. Never got to play that one (like most) and have only heard good things. Stop getting my hopes up for a VC platform, dangit!

I fully expect the Somic Advance series to show up at some point. Pretty good games, too--though the latter two are more interesting in my opinion. The Tales of Phantasia port which was released internationally  is also a good candidate if Golden Sun does well.

A very enjoyable episode all around.

To me the issue isn't so much whether Nintendo is or is not making new IPs--it's that more or less the same teams within Nintendo proper are dedicated to their specific series' for big profile releases. Yes, third party developers and some smaller teams are creating a bunch of new, experimental stuff, and that's great. I don't want to belittle the value of that. But aside from Wii Sports (which I consider big budget due to all the R&D for the Wii controller and concept development), I'd argue that the big-budget Nintendo efforts tend to be a tad too iterative. If EAD Tokyo alternated between Mario games and new or even just different Nintendo IPs, that would definitely help from the perception standpoint. Of course, seriously shaking things up within a series can be a valid approach too, a la Zelda II.

Clearly it is a Star Tropics reboot, set 20 years after Star Tropics 2 that is somewhere between Metroid Prime and Zelda in game design with some Uncharted presentation sprinkled in. Mike Jones, all grown up, is a researcher looking for evidence of alien life (who he fought, but no one believes him after all  this time). He gets abducted, brought to another planet, and must make an escape.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 123: Luigi's Lost Mind
« on: February 13, 2014, 11:05:03 PM »
Listened based on Mett's suggestion in the latest RFN. I have to admit that I really don't get the format of asking the trivia question before announcing the game. I would have known the 'what is the Wiimote used for' question right off the bat if I knew what the game was, and I have played that game, but the music didn't leave an impression on me. It seemed like twice Josh had to remind 'wasn't there a trivia question to answer, by the way?'. But I gather this has been the format for quite a long while so I'll just return to my corner now.
The intent behind the trivia question is two-fold:
1) For those who haven't identified the game, it provides an extra hint as to what the game may be (e.g., the hint question you mention indicates it is a Wii or Wii U game), and
2) For those who HAVE figured out the game, it gives them something else to ponder while listening to the third song.

How well that works in practice, it's hard for me to tell. At this point, it is certainly tradition as much as anything else. I will be the first to admit I have been increasingly bad about remembering to answer to the trivia question. I try to include the answer as part of the discussion of the game, but sometimes (often?) the conversation goes elsewhere and I forget about answering the question--only to notice the omission during editing. Hence, the ending on this particular episode.

If I get a bunch of feedback from listeners that they don't like the trivia question part of the format, I'll consider changing or getting rid of it.

I hope you otherwise enjoyed the episode.

Dunno why it got un-stickied, but I found the thread and made it sticky again.

This is unfortunate. At E3 I thought the 3DS game actually demoed better than the Wii U game. At least, I thought the controls were more responsive on the handheld. Looks like it was not to be, though.....

The moment Lindemann referred to himself as "The Full-Meal Deal", I had to stop the podcast.
This full meal is only half-baked :)

Good episode, guys. The title is especially amusing.

Glad you guys liked it. As I was editing the episode I was worried this round might have been too hard, but I guess it's healthy to have a stumper every once in a while.
