TalkBack / RE: Revolution FPS from Midway?
« on: January 27, 2006, 07:10:11 PM »
Well, this isn't rumor, at least in the sense that Midway is admitting to something + Revolution, at least in the planning stages. We thought we'd run with it because Midway has an iffy relationship with Nintendo and this suggests good things.

TalkBack / Revolution FPS from Midway?
« on: January 27, 2006, 11:41:34 AM »
A new job listing suggests Midway is working on a first person shooter for all three next-generation platforms.

Midway has posted a new job listing for a Level Layout Designer on a "Next Generation First Person Shooter." While such a posting is usually unremarkable to the average gamer, this one holds a sliver of encouraging information. Midway lists Nintendo Revolution as a target platform for this Unreal 3 engine-based title.

Although Midway has continued to support Nintendo GameCube through its waning years with Rampage: Total Destruction and Midway Arcade Treasures 3, many of its multiplatform titles (such as Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks) were never released on Nintendo's console. While Midway's plans for this game could change, this posting shows that it is interested in seriously supporting the Revolution.

TalkBack / Reggie Says Revolution will be "under $300"
« on: January 18, 2006, 10:14:01 AM »
Nintendo’s spokesman reaffirms Nintendo’s affordable pricing with a tangible figure.

In an interview with News.com, Nintendo Vice President Reggie Fils-Aime discusses his company’s New Year’s resolutions.

Most significantly, Reggie reiterates that Nintendo’s new console will be affordable at less than $300.

Since you mentioned pricing, I assume the Revolution will be accessible to gamers for substantially less than $700?

Fils-Aime: That's correct. The next-generation console from Nintendo, code-named Revolution, will cost less than $300. Our third resolution is to stop turning away new players.
When asked about projected sales during Revolution’s launch window, the executive remains confident in Nintendo’s strategy.

Fils-Aime: We will sell more units than Xbox 360 did here in the United States in our launch window. I mean, in December we sold more GameCubes in the United States than Microsoft sold 360s, and Revolution will do better than that.
Reggie also discusses upcoming games such as Tetris DS, its commitment to non-traditional gaming, and the company’s current image in the console arena. Visit News.com for the full story.

TalkBack / RE:U.S. Game Sales Hit $10.5 Billion

Quote

They had never used the term when the GBA launched so it's a "gamer" system because it was designed primarily with gamers in mind. The DS is a "non-gamer" system because from the very beginning Nintendo designed the DS with the idea of attracting people who currently don't play games.

I think you're falling into a trap. Developing for "non-gamers" is now a public, official stance. However, casual, 2-minute gaming has been a goal for Nitnendo's handheld products for years. They're putting more effort behind their "non-gamer" strategy now, but that doesn't mean it is a brand new strategy. Nintendo is not going to pronounce the GBA for non-gamers because it is old hat now.

Dear KDR_11k. I like the Tanooki suit and Super cape. What about you? Considering Super Mario Sunshine is often considered "too hard," I don't think the '"compromised" difficulty level is why some dislike that game.

TalkBack / Nintendo Conducts Focus Surveys for its Virtual Co
« on: January 10, 2006, 04:54:16 PM »
A survey reveals proposed plans for Revolution's retro gaming features. Preliminary games list inside!

Nintendo (through a third party) is conducting a closed survey on its Virtual Console feature for the Revolution—more specifically, proposed pricing and menu schemes. Joystiq reports details and screen captures of the survey.

Although reported content merely shows what Nintendo is considering, it is still worth noting. Three pricing schemes are proposed: purchase, rental and subscription. Gamers may pay a one-time price and download and own the game forever. Alternatively, they may rent a single game for a specified period. Finally, a monthly subscription would allow players to download a specified number of games each month—games downloaded prior months will continue to be playable (as long as Nintendo continues to get its monthly money). The images themselves are mock-ups for the survey and do not reflect the service's actual look.

Specific pricing apparently was not mentioned, but Joystiq has listed titles the survey listed as likely to be available at launch.

Once again, keep in mind that this is not confirmation of Nintendo's Virtual Console strategy or its games—Nintendo will almost certainly alter the proposed strategy above in response to the survey and internal feedback, and the game list could easily change.
