TalkBack / REVIEWS: My Horse And Me
« on: February 22, 2008, 10:40:05 AM »
Far more stick than carrot.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/reviewArt.cfm?artid=15389

My Horse & Me attempts to capitalize on the horse sense that many little girls (and probably some boys) are fond of, well, horses. The game greets its victims with  a squeaky-clean photo of a tween girl hugging her horse—clearly this game is targeted at unsuspecting parents and horse-obsessed little girls. Hopefully potential buyers will avoid the bait: My Horse & Me is a simple, rushed, and wholly uninspired game that fails to follow through on its promise of capturing the bond between horse and rider.

Based on the title and point-of-purchase box art, one might expect My Horse & Me to be a pet simulator in the style of Nintendogs. Well, it isn't.  You don't train your horse. You don't explore with your horse. You don't pet or feed your horse. In fact, you and your horse will not build any sort of relationship at all. You can crudely customize how you look by selecting among five generic, blurry, character models and similarly uninteresting clothing (shirts, boots, hats, etc). In the same vein, you can change the color of your horse's coat, mane, and saddle. But customization is fairly pointless, as you'll see little more than the rears of you and your horse outside of the customization menu. You will want to spend hours grooming your rigid, lifeless horse using a magically floating brush/hose Remote pointer icon—even though you (well, the model that represents you) remain stationary on screen, next to your horse. Needless to say, brushing a traditional plastic pony with an actual brush is a far better and probably cheaper simulation.

So what is My Horse & Me? It is a crude horse-riding game supported by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports. While FEI governs a variety of equestrian events, My Horse & Me forgoes all but one: show jumping. In show jumping, horse and rider must complete an obstacle course consisting of fences to be jumped in a precise order as quickly as possible. My Horse & Me recreates this event, often involving complex course layouts. Players will wind up gluing their eyes to a white line delineating the correct path through the hurdles. Just to make things annoying, this line fades in and out of view. Veering from the outlined path would be encouraged to shave seconds, except that it is far too easy to become lost and the time needed for gold is usually cake. Doing well unlocks more difficult courses and more worthless clothing.

Players control their horse with a Remote and Nunchuk as a substitution for reins. Pulling up with your right hand signals your horse to turn right; pulling up with your left hand signals the horse to turn left. (The options menu accommodates players who prefer holding the Remote in their left hand.) The turning controls work decently after some practice, as long as you do not gesture abruptly, but your horse generally feels sluggish, with no sense of speed or agility. You'll become disoriented after unsuccessfully attempting a jump or running into a wall, since the horse will change direction of its own accord, but that is probably true to real life.  Gestures used to speed up and slow down (pull back and shake three times, respectively) do not register as well as those for turning. The developers half-heartedly address this by using A and B buttons as the proverbial gas and brake. The game's tutorial does an awful job of explaining this, telling you to ride at a certain speed without showing you how to properly adjust your speed. Is the target audience really expected to browse through a menu to find out these buttons are used when riding?

In addition to show jumping, there are a few single-player mini-games. Most of them involve driving your horse-tank around a confined area to collect items. Perhaps the most entertaining one in this style is Chickens 'n Corn. Corn in this game grows at an alarming rate, and the chickens have a similarly insatiable appetite. Under a time limit, it is your job to harvest fully-grown corn from various fertile locations, chasing away any chickens before they gobble up growing or fully grown corn. This game has a simple, arcade appeal, though that appeal is not lasting. As with show jumping, it is difficult to see where the corn or the chickens are without a radar or map. Other throwaway mini-games include a Simon derivative and a game where you must identify subtle differences in two versions of the same scene.

My Horse & Me is shovel-ware, pure and simple. It looks ugly, its gameplay is limited, and its primary features—show jumping and item-collecting—bear little resemblance to its target audience. Including more than one equestrian sport could have made this game passable, but simulating the experience of owning a horse would have been far more appropriate.

Pros:

  • Chickens 'n Corn is a mildly amusing mini-game
  •
  • Nunchuk and Remote is a clever substitute for horse reins

  •        Cons:

  • The game is NOT about you and your horse
  •
  • Slow and sometimes unresponsive controls
  •
  • Bland and blurry graphics
  •
  • Narrow font is difficult to read
  •
  • The game crashed on me once in a menu

  •                Graphics:  2.0
My Horse & Me looks like a generic GameCube game running the Unreal 2 engine. Extremely blurry textures, static crowds, and sterile backgrounds demonstrate the overall lack of effort put into this game. Oddly, the credits sequence is the only part of this game with any art design.

                   Sound:  5.0
A somewhat condescending female coach tells you when you make a mistake—fortunately she can be turned off. A bearable announcer introduces each show jumping event with repetitive one-liners, and sound effects are similarly benign. Professional but unmemorable songs play in the menu and during mini-games—the music is probably the most polished part of this game.

                   Control:  5.5
The motion controls used to simulate horse reins work, though it still feels like you're driving a tank more than riding a horse, especially since buttons are used to adjust speed. The menu system is somewhat clunky.

                          Gameplay:  2.0
My Horse & Me amounts to a small collection of single-player mini-games on horseback. The show jumping in this game isn't completely terrible, but its implementation and appeal is limited. The game promotes itself as a pet simulator, yet in actuality there is barely any interaction with your horse at all.

           Lastability:  1.5
I don't even want the box art lying around in my house.

           Final:  2.0
If you took Epona's fence-jumping mini-game from Ocarina of Time, added crude gesture controls, and removed all personality, you would get something resembling this joke of a game. If your kid wants to play with a virtual horse, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Shadow of the Colossus provide far more interesting equestrian (and other) experiences.

Radio Trivia (Live) is very difficult to coordinate. Few people are usually available during the live broadcast, and we had many technical difficulties over the years. I wouldn't mind doing a live edition as a special event at some time, but it just doesn't make sense as a regular event.

Are you suggesting we post talkback threads for podcast trivia in the trivia section? That's an interesting idea. The questions aren't phrased well for posting without the music....

What is it like to play second fiddle?
     http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressionsArt.cfm?artid=15222

As you may have read, our fearless site director has imported Brawl.  Since I live a mere hour or so away, I was more than happy to visit with him at his abode for some quality football, pizza, and—most importantly—Smash Bros.

Steven already touched the basics in his initial impressions, so I thought I would dive into the game's adventure mode, the Subspace Emissary. The Subspace Emissary is a surprisingly lengthy adventure that weaves (almost) all of the game's characters into an inexplicable but utterly awesome series of platfomer-esque stages and battles. The story is told from a variety of perspectives as the game juggles disjoint character teams that slowly merge together. Since stages are tied to specific characters, the adventure mode also forces you to learn to use many of the characters at least well enough to complete a few stages.  Many of the teams could have been lifted from horrible fan fiction, but Brawl's trophy-based universe presents the adventure gracefully enough to suspend infeasability and allow you to accept the absurdity of a Pikachu-and-Samus duo. To frame the various scenarios, most stages begin and end with fantastic cut-scenes that will have you both laughing and cheering.

Level design is straightforward but interesting, with mazes, switch puzzles, and mini-bosses to conquer. As you might expect from a Sakurai-directed title, the adventure mode's doors, ladders, and bonus rooms give off a distinctly Kirby vibe. By no means is that a bad thing. Especially of note are the bosses, which range from giant war machines of the emissary to old Nintendo favorites.

Perhaps the biggest addition for the adventure mode is co-operative play (which arguably is also a Kirby-ism).  Smash Bros. is a very social game, and adding two-player co-op for the ten-hour adventure is much applauded. I played the Luigi to Steven's Mario for the lion's share of the Subspace Emissary, and overall I enjoyed spelunking through as sidekick.

However, the adventure mode isn't perfect. Firstly, it succumbs to one of Melee's pitfalls: adventure stages that uncomfortably clash with characters' shortcomings—on purpose. For example, in a (good) modern platformer a character wouldn't intentionally have a weak jump, but that is simply part of the Smash experience. I'm willing to accept that.  However, the implementation of co-op is simply annoying at times. Sometimes the action moves too fast, leaving player two continually warping back on screen instead of playing. (Think Tails in Sonic 2.) Also, after Player 1 dies, the camera abruptly centers on where Player 1 respawns, which can be disorienting for the second player. More importantly, as far as I can tell, player two cannot opt out of playing after dying. This is a problem, since both players consume the same bin of lives/characters. If Player 1 dies and there are no more lives, it's Game Over, even if Player 2 is in perfect health. This was especially aggravating when both Steven and I died at aaaalmost the same time…but not quite, so we lost. Also, don’t expect having two players to make life easier, since you can easily lose lives twice as fast.

All in all, though, I can't complain too much about The Subspace Emissary.  If the adventure mode were all there was to Brawl I would be very critical of its blemishes, but as a secondary mode it is very good. The premise is awesome, the stages are interesting, and the presentation is top-notch.  Sharing the adventure with a friend is a great experience, even if the co-op fumbles at times.

Podcast Discussion / Radio Trivia: Podcast Edition - List of Games Used
    « on: February 01, 2008, 06:55:39 PM »
    SPOILER ALERT!

Folks asked for it--I've finally delivered it: a list of all the games I've used on Radio Trivia: Podcast Edition!

I've spoilered out the list so that you may check if a game has been used without revealing other game choices. Use the find or search feature in your browser to look up a game title or episode number. If you want to view the whole list, simply highlight the text with your cursor.

Games are listed in alphabetical order. Episode numbers are encased in curly brackets ({ }) for convenience. For example, to find all the games from Episode 30 in Firefox, type "{30}" in the "Find" box and click on "Highlight all".

Also note that for games starting the words "the", "a," or "an", those articles have been moved to the end of the game title (e.g., "Adventures of Lolo, The") for a more sensible alphabetical order.

Yes, there is stereo. Perhaps you didn't notice until a song came along that underlined and italicized that feature.

I have to wonder if a cheat device could ultimately turn those demos into full versions of games... If all they have as a limiter is a time limit, I suspect that could be thwarted. Now, if they've pulled out chunks of code so only the first level is on the disc, that's another story.

Oh great, now I'll have Bubble Bobble music stuck in my head for New Year's. (BB is kind of dated, and gets pretty insane in level design/difficulty, but it's co-op nature keeps it accessible.)

TalkBack / RE: REVIEWS: Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
    « on: December 29, 2007, 08:56:25 PM »
I think this discussion makes one thing clear: everyone has a different definition of "hardcore" for the RPG genre.  I've always considered a "hardcore" RPG to be a turn-based battle system that is difficult (usually using grinding).  To me, "light" and "hardcore" have nothing to do with story or lack thereof, because neither game design precludes lots of text, cut-scenes, and whatever else they throw into these games. A game's popularity / number of obsessed fans is not really relevant to my definition of a "hardcore" game.

I have to say I'm not sure if some of Pale's complaints in this review will apply to fans of DQVIII.  Obviously there are serious problems with the synthesis based on the description, and it does sound like there's *too* much grinding, but complaints regarding the turn based battles and grinding in general apply equally to DQVIII....
