TalkBack / REVIEWS: Baten Kaitos Origins
« on: October 10, 2006, 04:17:46 PM »
Reprise your role as a guardian spirit in the long-awaited prequel to Baten Kaitos!

In the emerging world of Final Fantasy spin-offs and Mega Man Battle Network parades, RPG fans found an abode of originality in 2003's Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean.  Monolith Software and tri-Crescendo's card-based RPG presented a fresh and challenging battle system and an above-average story.  It had its setbacks, though—the battle system was too complex and its clever item combinations proved troublesome.  Baten Kaitos Origins admirably retains its predecessor's spirit while mending some of its faults, providing an engaging and lengthy adventure.     Baten Kaitos Origins takes place in the same world as Baten Kaitos, roughly 60 years before the first game's events.  In the world of Baten Kaitos, humans are largely confined to a handful of self-governing islands floating above the clouds. Magnus cards, a staple tool for this world, can store the essence (a.k.a. magnus) of anything from swords to smoke.  Humans here also have "wings of the heart," somewhat vestigial appendages that reflect the power and kindness of one's heart.

The world is largely presented through pre-rendered, animated backgrounds and contains its fair share of outlandish locales and critters.  For example, people ride on a living, breathing shark ship to commute among continents.  Those new to the world will more fully enjoy the world's crazier moments, since the game reuses many of Baten Kaitos' settings, although players familiar with Baten Kaitos will also enjoy revisiting the earlier era and its inhabitants.

Those same veterans will also be caught off guard by the prequel's revamped battle system.   During battles in the original, players had to avoid clashing elements, construct poker hands for bonuses, actively block enemy attacks, and combine magnus to make new cards.  While the battle system's difficulty was ultimately rewarding, the cards' random nature often caused grief.  For BKO, Monolith Software and tri-Crescendo wisely distilled the "magnus" of these gameplay elements into something far more approachable.  The party now shares a single deck and hand, and many cards may be used by all characters.  During a character's turn, cards are played from low to high, and no number may be used twice.  Type 0 cards are usually equipment (weapon, armor or accessory), and a character may only equip one at a time.  Card types 1 through 3 are generic attacks (weak, medium strong), and 4 and above are special techniques.  If a character uses at least one special attack during his turn, the player may continue the combo chain using the next ready character by starting with a 1 card.  Long combos charge the party's magnus power more quickly, which is spent on special techniques and certain items.  The more extravagant the attack, the more time a character will also need to recover before his next turn.  Cards without a number, such as healing items, must be used alone.  The player may also use a turn to discard multiple magnus or pass.

Pretty much anything can be stored as magnus—those used outside of battle are stored in blank magnus cards called quest magnus.  Since magnus is the essence of pretty much anything, quest magnus can even contain intangibles such as fun and exhaustion.  Some quest magnus also ages over time, so players must keep an eye out for rotten food and other undesirables.  What's more, simply carrying quest magnus can augment or weaken the party's statistics: grab some water to improve fire defense or collect a shiny stone to raise holy attacks.

Baten Kaitos Origins moves magnus mixing outside of battle, where it really belongs. Quest magnus are combined using special cards called magna mixers; magnus recipes scattered about the game provide guidance.  While combinations of attacks in battle do result in flashy combo attacks, they are no longer how you obtain more potent magnus cards.  Instead, stores can upgrade battle magnus by infusing quest magnus into a battle card.  And since you aren't expected to cook your own cards any more, BKO is also much better about providing incrementally better cards.  So whereas mixing magnus was a vague and tedious chore in Baten Kaitos, it is a fun hobby and diversion in this prequel.     The story in Origins is adequately amusing.  An adventuresome but unsure young teen named Sagi must lead a group of friends to save the world from the Alfard Empire and its efforts to infiltrate neighboring island-nations through the forceful introduction of their technology.   What's more, this so-called promachination is mysteriously linked to giant, unnatural beasts starting to appear on the continents, which have a mysterious link to a thousand-year-old legend.  Like Kalas from Baten Kaitos, Sagi is a spiriter, meaning he shares his body and consults with a wise and powerful guardian spirit—you!

At its core BKO shares the same save-the-world plot found in almost every Japanese RPG, but Origins' personalized take is plausible enough as to not feel forced.  The game's dungeons, if you can call them that, are small and fairly well incorporated in the plot: Sagi usually has a better reason for his ventures than the retrieval of some artifact.  Political overtones also spark interest—promachination and political espionage has generated unrest within Alfard, too, and a few hours into the story you must investigate a terrorist bombing.  Well into the game a few interesting plot twists surface, but I wouldn't want to spoil those.

The game's storytelling does have some familiar faults.  BKO relies far too heavily on scripted boss battles you must lose—after surviving to inflict enough damage, mind you.  And while the magnus descriptions are often enjoyably silly (or downright insane), the prose can sometimes obscure a magnus card's usefulness.  At times the writing feels a bit stiff, but this is understandable given the quantity of text. Less forgivable are the voices, which unfortunately are no less abysmal than the first game's.  The voices bear few traces of direction: lines are delivered with little concern for situational context, and only a few characters sound anything less than cheesy.  Fortunately voices can be safely stored in the off position, save for the relatively benign battle exclamations.

Baten Kaitos Origins is a worthwhile addition to the first game's saga.  Baten Kaitos Origins will not sway dissidents of turn-based RPGs, but the peculiar aura and lively battles are commendable, and its plot is strong in spite of its clichés. If you're looking to give your GameCube a final farewell, I could think of far worse send-offs than Baten Kaitos Origins.

Pros:

  • Well-integrated plot with interesting twists
  • Simplified but still engaging card battle system
  • Far better magnus mixing/upgrade system
  • You can turn off the voices

           Cons:

  • Blurry textures
  • No in-game introduction to the battle system
  • Sometimes unclear how to progress
  • More terrible voice acting

                   Graphics:  7.0
Baten Kaitos Origins holds some creative scenery, but neither the pre-rendered backgrounds nor the muddy rendered overlays are technological feats.  The character models are more detailed and fluidly animated than in the first game, and the character art accompanying text is more aesthetically pleasing.

                   Sound:  8.0
Motoi Sakuraba's majestic and catchy melodies, which incorporate both orchestral and synthesized instruments, are a perfect fit for the Baten Kaitos series. Players will enjoy both the game's original music and rearrangements from Baten Kaitos.  Unfortunately, the English voices lack any sort of cohesion, defacing this excellent soundtrack.

                   Control:  7.0
Sagi controls comfortably outside of battle, and the light wing dash is a welcome addition. The menu system is somewhat bulky, though—especially for editing magnus decks. Battle controls are never properly explained within the game, and I got well into the game without understanding some of battle system's finer points, so reading the manual is strongly recommended.

                          Gameplay:  8.5
The upbeat battles provide adequate challenge, though they can grow tiresome over longer playing sessions. Knowing when to discard is a key survival skill, and exploiting elemental affiliations can be vital to victory.  Some of the fetch quests are annoying, but the mandatory ones are never terribly long.

           Lastability:  9.0
Between optional quests such as the coliseum and personal favors, and the variety of quest magnus to experiment with, Baten Kaitos Origins should easily live up to its promise of 60+ hours.

           Final:  8.0
Baten Kaitos Origins is perfect for those who passed on the first one or backed away from its intimidating battle system.  Hardened guardian spirits should also appreciate BKO's revamped battle system, though they may prefer the original's complexity.  Although it would be misleading to call Baten Kaitos Origins entirely new, its decent story and enjoyable battles certainly make it worthwhile.

TalkBack / MP3 Playback on Wii
    « on: October 09, 2006, 07:52:06 PM »
Nintendo reveals that Wii has native support for MP3 playback in Nintendo's latest translated entry of "Iwata Asks."

Nintendo continues to reveal delicious nuggets of Wii information in its long-running Q&A series with Iwata and his underlings.  In the latest addition Iwata talks with Kouichi Kawamoto, most recognized for directing Brain Age for Nintendo DS.

In the interview, Kawamoto explains the history and motivation behind his Photo Channel.  While Iwata and Kawamoto mentions entertaining features such as drawing graffiti, most surprising is its support for audio playback: when viewing a slideshow, MP3s stored on the SD card will play in the background.  Kawamoto also mentions video playback, though it seems to be fairly limited.

While Nintendo's built-in MP3 playback looks to be confined to the Photo channel for now, game developers will likely be able to offer similar MP3 playback in their own software, not unlike the custom soundtrack feature Microsoft offers.  Wii's SD card slot opens many new possibilities—MP3s and digital images could just be the beginning.

If you missed earlier episodes of "Iwata Asks," be sure to read up!

Capcom wins awards for Gyakuten Saiban 4 and other games.

CAPCOM® Games Dominate Tokyo Game Show

Capcom Receives More 2006 Japan Game Awards Than Any Other Third Party Publisher

The Japan Game Awards were created by the Computer Entertainment Software Association (CESA) to recognize outstanding titles in computer entertainment software.  The 2006 awards were presented on September 22-24.  With a total of five honors overall, Capcom® has received more awards than any other third party publisher.

The Game of the Year Division acknowledged titles commercially released in Japan between April 1, 2005 and March 31, 2006.  Capcom is pleased to announce that Monster Hunter 2 (Dos) for the PlayStationâ2 computer entertainment system received the esteemed Award for Excellence and Monster Hunter Freedom for the PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) system received the Special Award.

The awards in the illustrious Future Division, for games which have not yet shipped, were determined by votes from attendees of Tokyo Game Show 2006.  Capcom received three of the eleven awards, the most among any third party publisher, for the following titles: Lost Planet™: Extreme Condition for Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd for the PSP system and Gyakuten Saiban 4 for Nintendo DS™.

Lost Planet for Xbox 360 is a riveting sci-fi action shooter with intense cinematic gameplay set within the ruthless conditions of a war-torn ice covered planet. This all new, next-generation title was also awarded “Best Xbox 360 Game" at the Leipzig Games Convention this past August by a panel of top journalists.

The Monster Hunter franchise features a player in the role of a fearless hunter tracking down and battling huge monsters in beautifully detailed environments.  As a result of the original PS2 title’s strong reception, it made its move to the PlayStation Portable (PSP) under the name Monster Hunter Freedom in December.  As of March 2006, the combined sales of the smash-hit PSP and PlayStation 2 titles have exceeded 2,000,000 units worldwide.

Gyakuten Saiban 4, which marks the first game in the series to be completely designed for the Nintendo DS, is the latest chapter of the exciting courtroom drama.  Players assume the role of a rookie defense attorney who must absolve his clients of trumped-up charges in a court of law.

As a leading worldwide developer in the gaming industry, Capcom strives to expand on existing popular franchises as well as create exciting original titles for fans to enjoy.

TalkBack / Mega Man Star Force Announced

You saw the screens.  Now read the press release.

Capcom® Introduces A "Wave" New World With Mega Man Star ForceTM For The Nintendo DSTM

Blue Bomber Celebrates 20th Anniversary with a New Series Debuting in Three Versions

TOKYO - Sept. 22, 2006 — Capcom® today announced Mega Man Star Force™ for the Nintendo DS™, the first game in a new Mega Man series making its debut in three versions – Pegasus, Leo and Dragon. Mega Man Star Force introduces all new characters and a fresh storyline with interspatial themes of astronomy and electric wave signals. Developed by the team behind the popular Mega Man Battle Network series, the game marks the start of a new era for Mega Man, which celebrates his 20th anniversary next year. The first playable demo of the game will be available in the Kids Corner at Tokyo Game Show 2006. Capcom plans to release Mega Man Star Force in fall 2007.

The year is 22XX. Viruses and cyber crime have been eliminated from the net and technology has advanced to an unprecedented level. The world of tomorrow is one where people use mobile computers called "Trancers" and are able to change various navigation systems into electromagnetic waves (EM waves). These EM waves are known as the Wave Road. The Wave Road exists in the real world, however it is only visible to those from the mysterious planet FM and the game’s hero who, through a twist of fate, transforms into EM waves himself.

Mega Man Star Force introduces a new lead character, a boy named Subaru Hoshikawa, whose astronaut father has disappeared after a mysterious incident at the satellite station. Fond memories of spending time with his father have inspired Subaru’s interests in the stars and what lies beyond. One day, Subaru heads to the observation deck and puts on a pair of “visualizer" glasses that had belonged to his father. These allow the wearer to see all the electric connections that exist between spaces. When he puts on these special goggles, a specific wave is triggered, summoning the presence of a mysterious alien life form named Warlock who had escaped from the planet FM. Dangerous creatures from that planet have come to attack Earth, so they must join together in order to defeat these menacing forces. Combining with Warlock enables Subaru to transform into Mega Man and enter the Wave Road.

Mega Man Star Force includes the following features:
    • Two coexisting worlds – players can navigate the real world as Subaru and transform into Mega Man to travel across Wave Road
    • Three stellar versions call upon the power of the elements to offer distinct advantages
o Pegasus – based on the water element, Ice
Pegasus can instantly freeze an opponent with its special Ice Slash
o Leo – turning up the heat, Fire Leo uses a special Flame Burner attack that can incinerate enemies in its path
o Dragon – the ferocious Green Dragon draws upon the power of wood with a Wood Shot move that fires a cluster of razor sharp leaves to slash enemies to bits
o Star Force Big Bang – under special conditions, each form can unleash a devastating super move that draws upon their respective element
    • Elemental power chain
o All battle cards have one of five elemental characteristics: fire, water, wood, electricity or neutral
o Each star force’s elemental attribute is stronger than one and weaker than another; double damage is dealt against a weaker element while double damage is received from a stronger element
o Wood bashes electricity, electricity shocks water, water puts out fire, and fire burns wood
    • New battle system
o View the action from behind MegaMan in a new third person perspective
o Cyber “wave battles" now take place in a three by five grid with no boundaries between the player and the enemies
    • Dynamic Brother Band system - add up to 6 friends that also have the game in order to gain powerful advantages in battle and help power up each other’s abilities
o Favorite cards – each player has 6 registered favorite cards which are part of his profile; by using a friend’s Brother force card during battle, one of these 6 favorites is picked at random for use during the battle
o Link ability – these can offer a boost in HP, higher attack level and more
o As a player levels up and the more Brothers they have, the link ability and other Brother card data get boosted as well
o Best Combo – combineBattle Cards to unleash consecutive attacks; players can also use a Brother’s Best Combo as well
o Connecting with others that have the same cards in their folders can boost the power of those cards for a player
o Brothers are encouraged to link up frequently to ensure they have the latest and greatest data
o By default you can transform into the version of Mega Man related to the version of the game you have; however, if you have a Brother with a different version of the game, you can transform into that Mega Man as well
    • Each player has a personal page where they can edit their profile, organize their folders and more
    • Fight against updated versions of familiar foes as well as exciting never before seen enemies

    TalkBack / GDC Grows Larger
    « on: September 18, 2006, 06:29:09 PM »
It's official: GDC is the new E3.

Game Developers Conference Cements Role as World's Largest Game Industry-Only Event

GDC Doubles Show Floor and Provides More Opportunities for Publishers and Key Industry Players

SAN FRANCISCO - Sept. 18, 2006 - The CMP Game Group, organizers of the Game Developers   Conference (GDC), announced today that they are more than doubling their show   floor to accommodate the game industry market need for a single, one-stop shop   event.  The Game Developers Conference will take place March 5-9, 2007 at the   Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.

With E3 moving to a 5,000 person media-centric event, GDC has been elevated to   the world's largest trade event dedicated to the game industry, with attendees   numbering more than 12,500 including more than 1,000 members of the working press.    2007 will be the first year of GDC's long-term relocation to San Francisco,   after its high growth trajectory necessitated the move to accommodate the expanding   attendee base.  When GDC was last in San Francisco in 2005, the show occupied   the three floors of Moscone West.  For GDC 07, the organizers reserved both Moscone   West and Moscone North.  With the Moscone West show floor virtually sold out,   the organizers have now additionally secured the keynote hall in Moscone South   in order to convert Moscone North into a second dedicated show floor. This will   allow the GDC to accommodate the voluminous requests coming in for exhibition   space and to include fresh exhibitor opportunities, such as the all-new Game   Demo Theater.

"As GDC enters its 20th year, it emerges as the event with the largest gravitational   pull of any other game industry-only event," said Jamil Moledina, executive director   of the GDC.  "While it remains our primary goal to serve the game development   community and ensure that the session-based half of GDC remains unchanged, we   also believe it is time to dramatically upgrade the range of expo opportunities.    The result of our expansion is that GDC becomes the natural choice for all companies   in the game industry ecosystem to exhibit and conduct business."

The traditional business of GDC has centered on the creation of development deals   for publishing games, an environment fostered through a mix of industry-defining   conference sessions, a broad constellation of targeted networking receptions   and the Game Connection matchmaking system.  In recent years, however, the event   has grown far beyond its developer core, with a show floor, networking and visibility   options that enable companies to build buzz for their products, connect with   the right buyers, build international exposure and form strategic partnerships.

The new show floor is built around a core of existing GDC expo suites and a networking   lounge, surrounded by publishers, developers, outsourcers, middleware providers,   peripheral companies, component companies, mobile game companies, casual game   companies, serious game companies, online game companies, licensed IP holders,   and international consortia.  These groups complement the existing GDC exhibitors   of platform companies, tool providers, and technology providers. Vendors on the   new floor have a choice between booth space, expo suites and meeting rooms, while   publishers and developers have the chance to demonstrate upcoming games in the   brand new Game Demo Theater.

"The GDC is always working on answering developers' needs and requests. Once   again, we have proof of that," remarked Julien Merceron, Worldwide CTO of Eidos   Interactive. "Most challenges for developing next-gen games come from building   extremely efficient pipelines using cutting-edge programming techniques on more   complex architectures. More expo space will allow the GDC to cover more diverse   technologies, accommodate larger booths - which facilitate better evaluation   conditions - and provide progressive companies that are working on the fringe   of our industry with a showcase for their products."

"With these changes, we're getting to see even more of the latest technologies,   the ones that will fuel the next generation of video games, without standing   in line and without deafening music - that's what makes the GDC Expo floor special,"   noted David Perry, CEO, GameConsultants.com

GDC has historically provided, and will continue to provide, dedicated networking   and reception events for developers, publishers, serious game companies, mobile   companies, and East-West collaboration.  GDC is adding a casual/independent reception,   as well as a dedicated Independent Games Conference to augment the Independent   Games Festival (IGF), the oldest and most prestigious game innovation laboratory,   that also takes place at GDC.  Both the IGF and the Game Developers Choice Awards,   the most widely respected peer-based game industry awards event, provide new   visibility opportunities for companies not endemic to the game industry.

TalkBack / Two New Monkeys in Balls
    « on: September 13, 2006, 09:10:10 PM »
YanYan and Doctor join the fun.

SEGA'S 'SUPER MONKEY BALL BANANA BLITZ' TO FEATURE TWO NEW CHARACTERS

AiAi is Joined by Two New Friends for his Super Monkey Ball Debut on Nintendo's Wii Console

SAN FRANCISCO (September 13th, 2006) – SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced two new characters for Super Monkey Ball™ Banana Blitz developed by SEGA Studios for the Nintendo Wii console. AiAi, MeeMee, GonGon, and Baby will be joined by new characters YanYan; a young, vivacious female monkey and Doctor; an older monkey with a past steeped in mystery due to his acute case of amnesia. The addition of YanYan and Doctor also marks another first for the Super Monkey Ball franchise, differing skill-set levels for each character. Each character will have strengths and weaknesses in categories such as acceleration, speed, and jumping ability. Even the size of the monkey ball and its weight will play a role in a character's performance in the game.

"The Super Monkey Ball franchise has enjoyed great success and has built a loyal fan base amongst casual and hardcore gamers alike," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "The addition of two new characters and the advent of different skill-sets for all the characters has expanded the gameplay of the franchise for its debut on the Wii."

For the first time AiAi and his friends will have the ability to jump when players flick the Nintendo Wii remote in an upward motion. The ability to jump has given game designers another dimension in which to expand the Super Monkey Ball gameplay experience and allows gamers a whole new way to interact with the franchise; this time in true three-dimensional fashion.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz will also feature 50 new Party Games, which have been creatively designed to take advantage of the Wii remote in a multitude of ways. Gamers will find themselves competing in games such as "Ring Toss", fighting aliens in space with "Alien Attack", or even smacking pesky moles in a game of "Whack-a-Mole." Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz's large library of Party Games is sure to inspire friendly competition anytime.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz is currently being developed by SEGA Studios.

TalkBack / IMPRESSIONS: Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam
    « on: August 24, 2006, 12:00:00 PM »
I played Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam for Wii last week.  Must I really say anything else?

Activision recently invited me to play an advanced build of its Wii-exclusive downhill racer.  Although the new controller introduces some peculiarities, Hawk seems eager to please with his most daring game in years.

For those who missed our recent interview with its developers, Toys for Bob, Downhill Jam draws its inspiration from 1080 Snowboarding and SSX, bringing Activision to the world of downhill boarding.  The game features eight settings, each with numerous events and course variations to explore.  In addition to Hawk, players can choose among eight archetypical characters such as the hippie or army dude, or create a custom character.  Accomplishing goals in the main game will unlock an arsenal of boards which modify a character's statistics: speed, turning, balance, jump, and combat.

Most striking are the game's controls.  The controller is held sideways (like an NES controller), and the player steers and balances by tilting the controller left and right.  Like many Wii demos from May's E3, the tilt controls initially felt too sensitive: every journalist present found himself jamming uphill at least once after an unintentionally sharp U-turn.  We all improved over time, though with my poorly-honed sports skills I was inarguably the runt of the litter.  While not perfect, the current calibration is manageable, and the final game's adjustable sensitivity should appease most players.

The core moves are straightforward enough.  Tapping the 1 button (formerly "b") will cause the player to push off the ground (useful after wiping out).  Tilting forward or holding the 2 button (formerly "a") will make the player crouch (increasing his acceleration and top speed), while releasing 2 triggers an ollie (jump). Whilst in midair, players can show off their moves by pushing 1 to grind on nearby rails/walls and 2 to perform grabs.  The D-pad direction determines the specific trick performed.  In Trick Mode, blasting through a fiery ring will slow the game down so the player can pull off more moves before landing.  Activision has omitted moves from the series that would halt a boarder in his tracks, for obvious reasons.

Why bother with tricks in a pure race, you ask?  Well, besides earning points in Trick Mode, impressive moves and good landings will charge the boost meter prominently featured on the right side of the screen.  Once on fire (the meter is filled), you can initiate a boost by flicking the controller or dubiously reaching for B (the trigger button underneath).  Spectacular skills (and the occasional smacked pedestrian or opponent) can earn players two or even three boosts per charge.  Simply holding down 2 to crouch/accelerate will do you no good, either, as your board wobbles uncontrollably as it reaches top speed.  Players can also power slide around sharp corners Mario Kart-style by holding A.  Unfortunately, moving my left thumb right off the D-pad for red sparks was more than a little awkward, so I never got a feel for the move.  Where are the shoulder buttons, Nintendo?  Swapping the power slide's A button mapping with the 1 button's lesser-used combat and acceleration, or moving the power slide to the D-pad, would seem more convenient.

Although only shorter courses were on display, I was pleased with what I saw. Since skateboarding does not demand snow, the Birdman and his fictitious boarding buddies grind through locales ranging from San Francisco to Hong Kong.  Edinburgh Castle's cobbled course was especially memorable, both for its detailed environment and imaginative design.  With walls to jump, ridges to grind and ramps to exploit, even the short version of this Scottish setting is brimming with alternate routes.  Bells, flags, gates, fountains and other decorations provide atmosphere and a sense of speed.  Heck, Activision has even thrown in bagpipes for the results screen.  Hong Kong's winding rails also looked promising, though I did not have the chance to attempt it.  The game ran fairly smoothly, though minor hiccups in the frame rate and pop-up were present in some levels.  The development team expects a solid 60 frames per second on the final hardware.

The Tony Hawk franchise is a natural fit for the extreme sports racing niche, and Downhill Jam for Wii seems to be a genuine effort.  Even though only one controller was on hand, I can tell this will be a strong multiplayer launch title.

TalkBack / RUMORS: Camelot Parts Ways with Nintendo?
    « on: August 01, 2006, 06:31:06 PM »
The developer behind multiple Mario sports titles and Golden Sun is working on a new online golf game in Japan…for PCs.

For years Camelot Software Planning has left its fans in the dark about their next project.  The general consensus among Nintendo fans has been that they are working on a Wii entry to the Golden Sun series.  After all, they posted a job opening for a programmer, citing the Revolution as a target platform, and the Takahashi brothers have expressed interest in bringing the series to a more versatile platform.

Today Camelot and publisher Eleven-Up revealed a massively multiplayer online golf game for PC gamers in Japan titled I Love Golf!, scheduled for release later this year.  This will be the first Camelot game without Nintendo as its publisher since Mario Golf on the N64 in 1999.

Camelot has always been a third party developer for Nintendo.  Although this announcement is unexpected, it does not necessarily indicate a falling out between the two companies.  Camelot has a long history of golf games, and Nintendo may have been reluctant to fund and support a massively multiplayer online game early in Wii's life—especially with its own Wii Sports set for launch.  Camelot may still have a Wii or DS project in the works; given Camelot's small size, though, such a game likely would not be released anytime soon.

The ESA says the new Electronics Entertainment Expo's more "intimate" environment will no longer cause ears to bleed.

Entertainment Software Association Announces Evolution of E3Expo for 2007

Monday July 31, 1:46 pm ET

WASHINGTON, D.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 31, 2006--To better address  the needs of today's global computer and video game industry, the 2007  Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3Expo) is evolving into a more  intimate event focused on targeted, personalized meetings and  activities, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced  today.

"The world of interactive entertainment has changed since E3Expo was  created 12 years ago. At that time we were focused on establishing the  industry and securing orders for the holiday season," said Douglas  Lowenstein, President of the ESA, the trade association representing  U.S. computer and video game publishers and the owner of E3Expo. "Over  the years, it has become clear that we need a more intimate program,  including higher quality, more personal dialogue with the worldwide  media, developers, retailers and other key industry audiences."

The new E3Expo will take shape over the next several months. As  currently envisioned, it will still take place in Los Angeles,  described by ESA as a "great and supportive partner helping to build  E3." It will focus on press events and small meetings with media,  retail, development, and other key sectors. While there will be  opportunities for game demonstrations, E3Expo 2007 will not feature  the large trade show environment of previous years.

"E3Expo remains an important event for the industry and we want to  keep that sense of excitement and interest, ensuring that the human  and financial resources crucial to its success can be deployed  productively to create an exciting new format to meet the needs of the  industry. The new event ensures that there will be an effective and  more efficient way for companies to get information to media,  consumers, and others," said Lowenstein.

Additionally, the evolution of the video game industry into a vibrant  and expanding global market has led to the creation of major events in  different regions, such as the Games Convention in Leipzig, the Tokyo  Game Show, and company-specific events held by Sony, Nintendo,  Microsoft, and others around the world. As a result, Lowenstein said,  "It is no longer necessary or efficient to have a single industry  'mega-show.' By refocusing on a highly-targeted event, we think we can  do a better job serving our members and the industry as a whole, and  our members are energized about creating this new E3."

Additional details about the new E3Expo event will be forthcoming in  the next few months.

The ESA is the U.S. association dedicated to serving the business and  public affairs needs of the companies publishing interactive games for  video game consoles, handheld devices, personal computers, and the  Internet. ESA members collectively account for more than 90 percent of  the $7 billion in entertainment software sales in the U.S. in 2005,  and billions more in export sales of entertainment software. TalkBack / PREVIEWS: Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
    « on: July 04, 2006, 08:00:00 AM »
Grab your whip for another round of monster-stomping!

Last updated: 07/03/2006 by Michael "TYP" Cole

Castlevania is arguably the most proliferate and consistently praised series on Nintendo's handhelds.  Since Castlevania: Circle of the Moon in 2001, Konami's 2D games have been a mainstay for handheld gamers.  Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin for Nintendo DS continues the tradition, promising more monster-slashing and exploration for Castlevania fans.

Although Portrait of Ruin retains the overall structure forged by Symphony of the Night on the PlayStation, it brings some significant changes to the well-worn formula.  The Devil Painter and his two daughters have aspirations of (surprise) resurrecting Dracula amidst the chaos of World War II, a scheme that vampire hunter Jonathan Morris and his witch partner Charlotte Orlean must prevent.  Players may switch between the two characters at any time or summon the other character as a computer-controller partner.  While they share health and magic point meters, the two characters have different talents.  Jonathan initially wields a whip and common Castlevania sub-items (holy water, boomerangs, etc.), though he can collect many other main weapons (as Soma could in Dawn of Sorrow).  While Jonathan is stronger than his partner, he must rely on Charlotte for her transformational talents, such as her ability to fly as an owl.  The dual-character setup lends itself to magical attack combinations and puzzles, often involving context-sensitive actions. The player can direct the secondary character using the touch screen.

Like its predecessors, Portrait of Ruin will still require players to explore Dracula's castle, leveling up and snatching vital upgrades that will surely unlock previously inaccessible wings.  However, players will also venture through time and space using the Devil Painter's portraits scattered throughout the castle.  These more linear sections include locales such as a European city, an Egyptian desert, and a graveyard and, judging from the E3 2006 demo, will conclude with a boss battle.

This entry also improves on Dawn of Sorrow's graphics.  While the first DS game offered some 3D backdrops, Portrait of Ruin ups the ante by rendering many of its enemies as three-dimensional models, which provides for more fluid animations and special effects.  Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin will also feature a cooperative side adventure with its own stage, playable both locally and over Nintendo WiFi Connection.  With Konami's proven track record, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is most definitely worth gamers' anticipation.

Nintendo will establish a new branch to expand its presence in South Korea.

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Korea/HG01Dg02.html>Asia Times Online reports that Nintendo will found a new wholly owned subsidiary in Seoul, South Korea next week on July 7th with an initial worth of 25 billion won (roughly $26 million).

In the past Nintendo partnered with Korean company Daiwon Cl to distribute its products in South Korean.  However, the distributor's unsatisfactory (or nonexistent) localization efforts and customer support has damaged Nintendo's image in the Korean market.  With its new local Korean branch Nintendo will more effectively represent itself and its products (most notably Nintendo DS).
