Based on some grumblings on the Connectivity audio show, I didn't expect the game to be awarded the highest score.

Kinda hard to go by that though. Connectivity like NewsCast before it always seems to have a negative and mainly complaining slant to it in general. Complaining about games isn't a bad thing but when it seems like that is the majority stance all the time I can't help but notice it and wonder why some even bother doing the show. Mix messages do indeed get sent. It's why I stopped listing to NewsCast and why I've stopped with Connectivity after a few episodes.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Modern Warfare 3 to the Wii
« on: November 09, 2011, 07:15:25 AM »
It should be noted that in general there is a different feeling to gameplay when you compare Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops. It might be noticeable with Modern Warfare 1(Reflex) but much less so. I say that because some might have had a chance to play it if they only play CoD games on the Wii.

Infinity Ward makes design decisions I feel that are at best unfair and at worse horribly stupid. They have a problem as a company I've concluded that think they can do no wrong. A lot of decisions Treyarch made, that were simply common sense, like excluding certain perks and kill streaks (because of their cheapness, they were unbalanced, and unfair), the staking of kills from kill streaks to let you get the higher ones, removal of game ending kill streaks like the tactical nuke, and letting you customize your character and weapons were completely ignored in favor of the system that was used  in Modern Warfare 2 that is being use din MW3 now. This isn't for the better I feel and it's part of why people are saying it's just Modern Warfare 2.5. It's not just because of how it looks but how it seems to actually be designed. Design decisions people have complained about for a long time, that IW knew people didn't really care for I believe. People were talking about this before the release but those really looking forward to the game tried to stop any discussion of this or label people as Battlefield 3 fanboys for even mentioning the negatives (even though that game has it's fair share of issues to.). As if you have to favor the other game just because you notice issues in this one.

This is another reason why I'm most likley passing on the game. I did not care for MW2 when I finally played it. Sure certain bad things are taken out but they've doubled down on other things and added new questionable elements. Their claim about wanting a more gun vs gun game pretty much is a lie when you look at the air offensive kill streaks they put in the game.  Now with the Wii version that could be true since certain ones aren't included. I've felt in the past CoD games were better on this front as a result of the Wii's limitations.  It's kinda strange. Less can be more in this case.

I hope people do enjoy it however.

The E3 demo has leaked online.

Well all I got to say is I am REALLY excited now.

Stay out of threads regarding it on other forums. It seems some jackass on NeoGaf found a text file in it that contain story details and posted it. Blacked out but still. It's likely to spread now. Some have said what was contain was true but you never know. Better to stay catious. I'm avoiding all Zelda threads and forums save for this one now because of this. .

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U Must Bring it E3 2012?
« on: November 08, 2011, 08:19:46 PM »
Games are key. They will already look great. That should be obvious. I think we've reached a point where that can only get you so far. That no longer clouds people's judgement, at least I like to think it doesn't the way it did several years ago. I'm saving for the system now but I want there to be at least a few games I can pick up with the system on day one. I'm not looking for ports of games out now. Multiplatform releases that are a month or two old at the time of the release is acceptable. Collections with DLC are okay as that is a lot of content for the price.

They at least need to show some development on a new Mario, Zelda, and possibly Metroid. If not Metroid, F-Zero and/or Star Fox. If Pikmin is ready it needs to be there. If Animal Crossing is ready or close it needs to be there.  Wii U Fit should be there day one I think. I think if they added some social networking (if only through their online system) it could be a huge draw for those that loved the series on the Wii.

What I think would be great if they could partner with Capcom to rebirth Mega Man in 2D and 3D form. Leading up to his inclusion to Brawl.

They don't need much in terms of 3rd parties I think overall but few key series are a must. There needs to be some shooter of some kind. Debuting the latest Call of Duty that year, would be Treyarch's, would be a huge get for Nintendo. It would be on other systems of course but to have "Pre-order for Wii U" after the commercial instead of Xbox 360 would go a LONG way in the west.

Ghost Recon Online if it is still on the system has to be fully playable and ready to go.
A Wii U version of GTA V is a MUST!
The latest Madden that takes full advantage of the controller for plays, etc is a MUST!

The Sims. There has to be a new one soon I think. It's quite possible those it's aimed at might not have the PCs to run it just yet considering what they did with The Sims 3. Which means debuting it on the console version might be ideal. The Wii U controller could provide enough options to do it well.  This is me being really wishful though. I'd personally love this.

Their online system must be there fully complete. 100%.There can be no doubt on anything regarding it.

Videos made it seem to be that "dowsing" is suppose to point you in the right direction. It's suppose to replace the compass. Perhaps you are using it wrong by staying in first person view when you don't have to and aren't suppose to.

183
Or at least be completely honest about just how much of it you played and on what difficulty you played. I can understand not running through an RPG fully as they are very long. Even rushing you can miss a lot. In that case a late review is better. This is a downloadable title. It's not long. There isn't a need to be "first".

I give fan sites a pass as they do it for the love of the games, etc. It sucks when they do stuff like this but they are judged differently in the end. IGN is different. It's writers get paid. It's a job and they unfortunately carry a lot of weight in the industry. Actions like this show them to be I feel incompetent as well as unethical and just straight up liars. However this isn't the first time they've pulled this crap. There is a reason why the saying "You can't spell ignorant without IGN" exist.

General Gaming / Jumping into Uncharted (PS3 - Dual Pack)
« on: October 13, 2011, 12:31:35 AM »
The dual pack for Uncharted has been on sale at Best Buy for a week or two I think. It's been going for $25 instead of $40. Same for Resistance (1 and 2 combo).  I picked up the Uncharted combo today. Almost for the hell of it. I had been interested in the game for a while but didn't think I'd like it enough to justify the price. Didn't have it locally for me to rent either. Interested but not enough to go out of my way to play it. For the price I figured why not.

Downloaded the updates and DLC that came with the game. After that I jumped into one multiplayer games. in Uncharted 2. A deathmatch just to see how it was like and if I would get any play out of it. Did horribly. Only two kills the entire match however that one match answered a lot of questions I had about the game. Mainly regarding how it played and how multiplayer would actually work in the game with it being a 3rd person shooter. I really liked how it played based on the little I tried. Easy to get behind cover. Shooting looks like it will take some work. Though not sure if it's all about catching someone from behind or not. How fluid my character moved was nice.

Not sure if I'll get into the multiplayer but it's different from the other shooters I've been playing. Might end up being the change I've been looking for.

I played part Uncharted 1.  At the start of the 2nd chapter. At least that's how I think it's setup. The area right after the beginning mode stage. Okay so far. Doesn't look as good as I expected but Uncharted 1 is several years old now. Uncharted 2 clearly looked better from the multiplayer I played. Looking forward to playing more after work tomorrow.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 262: Where Pride Goes
« on: October 10, 2011, 07:26:00 AM »
I do wonder if there is a real possibility for Skyward Sword to seriously under sell. Not because it isn't a great game but because of the consumer base that Nintendo itself has created and at the same time alienated since the Wii has been out. It can be argued that Nintendo, do to it's own actions, drove certain types of gamers away from the system. Other systems were putting out games that were appealing. Not in terms of HD but just in terms of genres and quality. Third parties certainly weren't doing that on the Wii outside some very rare cases.  It's not like those gamers don't have options now as well either come this holiday season. Skyrim being the biggest threat in the RPG/Action adventure space. Modern Warfare 3 being a huge attention grabber and being the first thing many gamers will spend money on before anything else. Then you have games like Uncharted 3. I think there could be a LOT of crossover there and many gamers will feel, do to past Wii experiences, that Zelda isn't worth their time. Not because they hate the series or anything but simply because the PS3 or 360 has treated them as gamers a significantly better this generation. They could feel their attention and money is better spent on those system then going back to the Wii.

I think this is more of a possibility if Nintendo doesn't go crazy with advertising for the game to convince gamers it's worth their time and effort to buy the game. You can bet other companies will for their game and will do so in prime time. Nintendo of America is horrible at this.

What I wonder is if Zelda fails to gain the success they want will they fully understand why? Will they understand it isn't the game's fault but their own and how they've built the Wii audience and maintained or didn't maintain it until it was to late? The quality of the game simply won't be a factor I feel in the end.

General Gaming / Re: Battlefield 3
« on: October 02, 2011, 11:13:01 AM »
This "open beta" has been such a disappointment. As someone that has played a lot of Bad Company 2 I can' t help things are a step down in some areas. Graphics are better no doubt. Sounds are some of the best I've heard however the use of destruction is a disappointment compared to BC2. While it might be toned down so buildings don't get destroyed at the end of the Operation Metro map it's a disappointment in regard to other smaller objects.

Operation Metro is just a horrible map in general. I fully expect it to be taken out of rotation on the PC side when the game goes live. It's completely unbalanced and filled with chock points. It's simply not fun in the end.

In the end this "Open Beta" by EA/DICE was a mistake. This rush map is bad and doesn't help show what Battlefield can be like. At least not well. Rush mode is only as good as the map you're playing on I feel. The Conquest mode would be more ideal to show off the game.

However none of that matters due to the bug and glitch filled nature of the game on both consoles and PC. Word is this is an old build just how in the alpha we were laying an older build. That's stupid in the end. This is open beta is more then likely soured a LOT of people. There were going to be people that dislike the style of play the game has. It's good they got to see what it's like before buying but some had to be turn off at the level of polish. If there was a more current build that should have been used. Makes no sense to put out this build and allow this level of negativity and backlash. With the game about to go gold if it hasn't already I expect the retail client to be very similar to the open beta with perhaps a tiny bit of improvement. I also expect there will be large day one patch that won't fix as many things as people wish. There will be disappointment and it will be DICE's doing.

I think BF3 will do well and after being patched a lot will be very solid. However overtaking Call of Duty has just flown out the window with this open beta. EA can forget about that. They'll get a second chance with Medal of Honor 2 I think but that ship has sailed as far as Battlefield 3 is concerned.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 260: Zero-Sum Xenomics
« on: September 27, 2011, 01:25:29 AM »
Wanted to play Xenoblade but really I can't be bothered to go the extra steps to import it now. Instead I did something else. I ordered a copy of Radiant Historia. I've heard good things about from other places and this podcast. I figure why not give it a shot. I had been meaning to check it out in the past. It has taken the place of Solatorobo as I feel that is shallower then I though it would be. Wanted something more. Hopefully it ships from Amazon.com later today (Tuesday) and I get it by Saturday if standard shipping goes out on time.

With me trying to get away from more FPS this should do a good job I hope. That should keep me busy until Zelda, Mario 3D Land, and Mario Kart 7.

As suggested I can only hope the seeming success Xenoblade, at least better then NoE expected,  is having might change Nintendo of America's mind on The Last Story. Of the two, I know people have said Xenoblade was better, I was looking forward more to The Last Story anyway. Even now after watching a LOT of video of Xenoblade and read up on it. Now that game could push me to import while Xenoblade couldn't make me make the final leap.

General Gaming / Re: No longer finding competitive online fun. Anyone else?
« on: September 26, 2011, 08:39:21 PM »
Sometimes I wonder if it really is the community or if it's just war game after war game.  Reason I was interested in Battlefield 3 was because the last FPS I really enjoyed playing and I mean a lot was Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Everything I've played after it (mainly Call of Duty games, Resistance 3, Killzone 3, and even the Conduits and Goldeneye) just hasn't provided that level of enjoyment even though they were fun. The biggest difference I can think of is BC2 was very cooperative to a large degree, especially since I mainly played the Medic and Engineer classes. I'd say it was equal on that front as it was competitive. You had to work as a team where everything else is really every man or woman for themselves.  So perhaps it is the game modes as suggested in the end and not simply a case of being stick of FPS in general. In CoD I enjoyed Domination (capture and hold three objectives) a LOT compared to team deathmatch but not many people played that mode. So when forced to play one mode mainly it takes it's toll.

This has caused BF3 to go back on the pre-order list. :( I keep trying to stay away, make a decision, but I guess I'm weak willed. That or nothing really else can fill the void no matter how much I look. Though it could be removed once again tomorrow with how things are going. Changed my mind about MMOs. Still to burnout after I tired FFXIV again. Thankfully I tried that without putting any extra money down.

I'd like to play mainly with real life friends but that hasn't been an option since freshman year of college. I recall we had a semi dorm wide game of Return to Castle Wolfenstein a few times. That was a LOT of fun.

Edit: Bah off the pre-order list again. Need to practice better self-control in gaming.

General Gaming / No longer finding competitive online fun. Anyone else?
« on: September 25, 2011, 10:46:34 AM »
Came to a conclusion this weekend that caused me to cancel my pre-order for Battlefield 3. I simply no longer care about competitive online play. As far as action goes anyway. Racing against others still is fun and I think is the most fair out of all the genres that have competitive multiplayer. It's just as relaxing to me as single player play. So that might be the only exception.

I guess my focus on it in recent years was an attempt to be apart of the crowd. Connect with other gamers. Also it could be a general acceptance and attempt to deal with the direction the gaming industry was headed in. Being primarily a single player gamer for years (RPGs and Platformers) the focus on multiplayer was something I didn't care for until I got into MMORPGs. However that was cooperative primarily and I could ignore PvP if I didn't want to take part. I tired of compromising what I'm really interested in to be honest in the end. That's not to say I didn't enjoy myself when I play Call of Duty, etc. I just don't want to do it anymore going forward.

This thankfully will save me a LOT of money as I take a pass on some of these games and spend more time on MMO ($15 a month is cheaper then several $60 or less games a month or every other month). Or I could wait until some of these upcoming games are dirt cheap just so I can experience the single player game.

Anyone else find they are tired of the competitive scene? Adjusting around it? Cooperative > competitive?

Really enjoy the show but I think when recording you guys really need to increase the volume. I have the volume on my iPod maxed and you guys are still difficult to hear clearly. I listen to my iPod in my car and I have to have both my iPod volume maxed and my car volume near max in order to heard anything at all. James having a low voice volume makes it worse. This was a big problem with the Newscast as well until Scott took over editing. Don't have an issue with RFN or music in general.

I just have this concern that if I mod my Wii to play Xenoblade that Nintendo might just put something in Skyward Sword to counteract the mod. It being a major release. It's not like Nintenodo has any concern about the matter. SS would be the last chance to get a huge firmware update out there if only for the hell of it. Though perhaps it's my negativity. I don't put it past Nintendo screwing people this late in the game.

Last night was such a waste of time. Didn't even finish the presentation (which was pretty embarrassing at points) but from what I read today I didn't miss much at all. As a piece of tech the PS Vita is nice but I don't think I'll be getting one at launch or even near launch now. I do most of my handheld gaming at home but even for me the battery life is bad. The list of games already had nothing I was really that interested in and it's still that way.

TalkBack / Re: Iwata Says No to More Price Drops, Mobile Support
« on: September 14, 2011, 09:34:42 PM »
Glad he's taking a firm stand on this. What these investors and analyst don't seem to comprehend is that the second a Nintendo IP appears on any Nintendo hardware with any significance it strengthens another company, not Nintendo. What these people are calling for is the demise of the very company are invested in. Nintendo makes so much money on a single title or two that it puts the entire mobile gaming market to shame.

What they should be demanding is Nintendo expand it's own business into these areas in the Nintendo way (something they know nothing about). Reduce it's prices in the digital market on Nintendo's own digital stores. Perhaps monetize things with a cash shop or two in a game like Animal Crossing. Make the eShop/Wii Shop Channel/Wii U shop to come  as easy or easier to navigate then Apple's app store, etc.

There are clearly some Nintendo investors that have no knowledge of the very company they are invested in. All they see is that smartphone games, etc appear to be the new hotness. Ignoring just how much money the company they are invested actually makes game after game. How much cash it has. How much profit it makes. How valuable the IPs are. How independent it is. How dependent many other companies are on Nintendo. Etc. Analyst should know better as well.

« on: September 09, 2011, 10:11:39 AM »
If this is what is needed to make sure 3rd parties develop games for the system then so be it. A redesign that includes it will have to be bigger though as it's already crowded in the 3DS as it is. That means possibilities of a bigger battery and larger screen. It also means they can increase the price of the system. That is if they do a redesign. They might just include this in all 3DS boxes until they can get cost down to do a redesign. Especially if not all games need it. Just use it for games that do.

Not happy that it has come to this. Though don't hate it. I guess I'm really indifferent about the whole thing.

Nintendo........ :-\

I thought they wouldn't do this but it's here. Not sure how I feel about it. It just seems that there was clearly no communication at all with third parties when this system was designed. Which paints a increasingly negative impression to me that there is and was no communication between Nintendo and third parties when it comes to the Wii U regardless of what Nintendo is trying to spin.

I will most likely get Monster Hunter and if it comes packaged with the game I will get the bundle. Monster Hunter is a expansive enough game that it would warrant the purchase. If other games use it that's great. However for those that aren't interested in MH seeing how Nintendo will sell it everyone else will be interesting. Maybe Kid Icarus will use it.

Typically, the U.S. version is a year behind the Japanese version.
2013 for Wii anyone?
Makes sense to just Skip the Wii, if ur Nintendo console playing by Spring 2013
it will be on a WiiU.
If they require a monthly fee it will fail in the US, the US Dragon Quest fans are not that loyal.
Also, no 3DS version makes me sad as i perfer my RPG's on the go.

Exactly. The Japan release is sometime in 2012. It's easy to assume, based on past games, that the international version will be the end of 2012 at the earliest or more likely 2013. It would only make sense to just release the Wii U version at that point. This Wii and Wii U situation is primarily for the Japanese consumers as they'll be getting this most likely before the Wii U launches. This was a Japan focused/only event. We need to remember this.

Square-Enix really should have gone with Sony.

Only a Sony fanboy would say that.

That's complete and utter BS. I said that because of Nintendo's own actions have proven to me they won't do what is necessary to make this a success outside of Japan. I said that due to how they've treated and continued to treat their own RPGs that they themselves have developed. I could have sworn I went further in my post and explained why I felt that way. Yet if you just read the first sentence I can see how one could have missed it.

But my biggest issue right now is with the DS looking graphics. I know the Wii is limited in it's graphical capabilities, but I would have thought that it could produce better results than what I've seen in the screen shot (video do look a little better, but the videos are so small, it hard to really judge the detail). I'm holding out hope that the Wii U version uses the CG assets and looks more like a real-time cartoon than a big budget DS game.

Exactly how does http://nintendoeverything.com/73061/ and http://nintendoeverything.com/73066/ look anywhere close to a DS game? Seriously. They are using the same art style for characters and locations as DQ9 but I just assume that's the Dragon Quest style in general.
