I think Freeloader support was gotten rid of in one of the firmware updates.

You are correct sir. Freeloader has been a completely useless piece of plastic since holidays '08.

Man, didn't they?  The flashlight is great, and also the little bits of motion sensing for things like unlocking a door or turning a dial - I really liked those bits.

I hate how they implemented shadows though. Great lighting effects with horrific shadows is like a great chocolate cake that's drenched in some really nasty champagne tequila sauce.

Also odd because it reportedly broke the 100k mark.

That's actually fairly heartening to hear. Do you have a link for that though? Last I'd heard, NPD put it at under 50k for December.

Since the game is practically done, that leaves plenty of time to work on voice acting this year.

You may be joking but I totaly believe there will be voice acting. Charles Martinet has been on Nintendo's team for years. He must know the Zelda games have been basicly mute since day one. So why would he ever approach Miyamoto saying that he wants to voice Link? Because a casting call was probably put out for this Zelda game and he wondered why Link was not on the casting list.

I think you're overanalyzing.

I have yet to take this game out of the plastic wrapping :(

Your Raw Shocks are going to look like bar codes and dollar bills now.

Here's an interesting postmortem on LKS by the game's director/producer.

Did you know the game originally had pointer controls but they were removed early on because they didn't add anything to the game?

.......

"Zelda Wii isn’t being released in 2010. It is being dumped."

Sean's thinking is in-line with mine once again.  People want Zelda to be an incredible Motion Plus Zelda game.

But Wii is a platform for MULTIPLE games.  Where are the incredible Motion Plus GAMES?

Stop whining. There's Zelda, Resort, Tiger Woods, Grand Slam Tennis, erm...some hockey game...that other tennis game...the cowboy-samurai thing...and HeyLookOverThere *jumps out window*.

The nightmares scenes in this game are a bit of a hit or miss with me. The screaming monsters will ALWAYS catch up with you, no matter how fast you run. Tension fun is fun, but it gets annoying when you are low in stamia and have three of them hug-raping(?) you.

Once you start throwing debris behind you, you'll almost never get caught from behind again. Just skirt next to lockers etc. and do the motion when instructed. After that, the only time you should ever get caught is if a monster's literally on the other side of the door, and those are easy to shake off.

I'll definately buy this when it drops in price...which it will, because it's 3rd party, and appeals to a niche audience. $20 in 2010? A girl can dream!

What, you still think it'll be retailing for up to $20 by next month?

My biggest problem is that it skews a bit more towards interactive story than game. I know some people hate the chase scenes, but I wish there were more of them since they were the most "gamey" part of the game, and the whole "no combat" thing is genius.

I agree almost entirely. The only part where we differ is in the lack of combat: I think it's a fantastic idea, but they needed to refine the execution more. And I have a hard time thinking of it as a game, even though I really liked the title overall.

Little known fact: Reggie took my name. :(

If so then you better watch out. Whenever Reggie takes a name, an ass kicking will eventually follow.

You can get a new name and flee to a foreign country, but Reggie will still hunt you down. It is inevitable.

I know. I've put layers of padding on that thing, but I don't think it'll do me any good...

Your points are well taken and wholly acknowledged, especially the portion about PC gaming being a bit more mature in its use of the term. I stand by my statement as applied to consoles though, especially as applied to the self-proclaimed hardcore.

Are some of the umbrella files not available on certain difficulty settings? Try as I might, I can only find a third or so of a level's files, even when tossing grenades and firing SMG rounds like Rambo.

I bought this for $5, but I'm thinking about going out and picking up the Diablo Battle Chest since I never played it and everyone seems to think it's better than this and I could play it without booting into Windows.

Diablo II is better than this game, but if Torchlight doesn't interest you in the least, neither will Diablo. So think of this as a trial run for the Diablo series.

Also, I don't like the implication that "casual" means "bad". I'm sure you could find a better word to go there, like "questionable".

The problem is that the term is almost universally used as a euphemism for "piece of crap." Some exceptions exist, such as PopCap games, but usually when someone calls a game "casual" they basically mean "shovelware." Perhaps this isn't unjustified: most "casual" games are me-too titles that were clearly made on a small budget by a D-List team. This is in contrast to the average "hardcore" title, which is a me-too game made on a unnecessary budget by a bloated team.

Anyhow, to answer the titular question, it had to be Mickey's Speedway on the GBA.

Of course, there's an unspoken assumption here that everything a company has developed by launch date, they should give you on the disc. It sounds nice, but is there any real basis to this belief? Perhaps its the prerogative of the manufacturer to decide just what the final retail product is, even if it's less than what they could do.

It is certainly the publisher's decision as to what content goes on the disc, and which is held back for the chance to charge an extra fee. By the same token, though, it's our perogative as consumers to reject that model and feel ripped off when they decide a certain way!  ;D

Seriously though, the whole Warden's Keep thing is the only reason I haven't purchased Dragon Age, and likely won't until it hits $20. Even then, I'm tempted to simply pirate the DLC,* as that's the only way to get a friggin' storage chest!

*I'm not actually going to pirate it.

Ah, you're in the UK. Yeah, Ninty News is...special. I was thinking of Nintendo Week which, while bland, is almost never offensive. Please disregard that portion of my message!

And yeah, Beat only has three stages, but it makes up for that by making them all very long. Too long, in my opinion, especially for such a pick-up-and-play title.

Here's something I just thought of--I wonder if GameStop is going to sell add-on packs for retail games (e.g. the extra missions for Fallout 3) or just stand-alone games (e.g. Shadow Complex).

Extra content for retail goes against one of GameStop's core principles--used games.  Someone who purchases additional content is less likely to sell the retail game back to GameStop when they're done with it.  Say goodbye to huge margins!

Actually, it'd be great for Gamestop. The few DLC-packed discs that I've gotten my mitts on (the expansions for Fallout 3 and for Oblivion) only required you to install the DLC once. There was zero DRM on the DLC, just the main game. That means I could have, in theory, installed the main game, bought and installed the DLC, and then sold the DLC disc while keeping the DLC forever.

Youcan't say DLC is a scam, all you can say is that SOME companies doscams (like EA Sports charging money for uniforms in the Madden games).DLC in general is a good idea since it allows for companies to continueexpanding a game long after it comes out by doing stuff like adding newmultiplayer maps and weapons. I don't want console games to put up withthe crap that PC games do (like needing patches the same day the gamereleases because the developers did a shitty job of testing the gamewhile developing it). You seem to think that most DLC is bad, it's theother way around. The vast majority are good, it's only a few that arebad (the first one that I remember being on consoles was when BethesdaSoftworks had the balls to charge $2 for horse armor).

While I agree in theory, I'm fairly certain thing aren't going to work out this way in practice. We're already seeing games with sizeable DLC being available for sale on Day One. In other words, the publisher is deliberately holding back the content, solely to extract more money from you. Dragon Age is the most egregious example, but it's hardly the only one. There are even companies that put the DLC in the disc itself, but require you to pay for the unlock code. Sure, companies COULD follow the path you're talking about, but they're using more and more to screw us over, content-wise, and I doubt that's going to change anytime soon.

Squarelikes to make ridiculous DLC. Didn't someone prove that their WiiWaregame DLC is actually on the original game already and they are justcharging you for the unlock code?I was rather frustrated to find outthat half of My Life As A King DLC is actually unlocked in-game afteryou beat it once or twice.

You are correct sir: apart from the Infinity Spire, all of MLaaK's DLC was already in the initial download. You just paid to unlock it.

Surprisingly great game. I say "surprisingly" because 1) modern Silent Hill games tend to be very paint-by-numbers, while this one isn't, and 2) the game has severe flaws that would normally cripple my enjoyment of a title, but it doesn't here.

Love the use of symbolism so much.

Rune Factory Frontier.  The game I would be playing if it weren't for new game releases and LIFE.

150 hours later, I'd argue that life's totally not worth it anymore.

I make dragons, shades, and other beasts of god-like power do trivial tasks like mowing my lawn!

Some of those games don't deserve to be on the list. The Conduit? Yes I own that one but I wish I didn't.

I second this opinion. All that hype for a "me-too!" FPS...

What in the would is Tenchu 4? I thought it was a fighting game...

It's a ninja game where you actually have to act like a ninja, i.e. youneed to use stealth to kill foes instead of straight-up fighting. It'sa flawed title, but in spite of that it's fairly unique, and I heartilyrecommend it for its current $20 price tag.

Last I knew Boom Box Bash Party was less than 250K (VGC had it at 170K).

For what it's worth, one of the VGC mods (who worked with Bash Party'screator) says that the game's actually fairly undertracked by VGC,which is something of an oddity for that site.

Oh, and according to that same guy, the original is heavily overtracked by VGC, which is much more in line with that site's MO.

Theonly major flaw was the sword fighting which suffered from touchymotion controls. M+ would have greatly improved the experience Ibelieve.

I dunno: if combat was too easy/accessible, it would have gone far towards defeating the need to use stealth. As it is, I did everything I could to avoid fighting because the system was so difficult. If I could use Motion+, I probably would have forsaken the stealth part more often.

That said, there were a few fights that were unavoidable. I hated those so much... :-\

Don't most non-Nintendo companies seem to think they know the Wii userbase better than they really do?

Nah. They just skip the system entirely, so they never have to think what the userbase is composed of.

For some reason i wasn't interested in NSMBW. I just didn't want the DS game, in style, again.

So that leaves Lostwinds, Boy/Blob, and NyxQuest. I have a silly question, can you get demo's frrom the Nintendo Channel now?

The entire first quarter of Luigi Dude's top list I wouldn't touch, like Kairon. I'll even give the Bit Trips a go (Jonny on RFN said Void is the easiest one to start with?). I think there's quite a few you've all told me about to keep me going. I'll start with the WiiWare ones.

I guess i'm a bit more of a passive gamer in the sense that i want to be informed of games (thats what publishers should do, inform me!) rather than an active one and search out what i want.

Sorry to hear the part about NSMBWii. For what it's worth, artstyle's about all they have in common: I disliked the DS game intensely, as it was one of my biggest gaming letdowns in nearly 20 years, but the Wii game was phenomenal. Plus, it's nearly a different game when you add/subtract players. Try it at a friends, or rent it: I can almost guarantee that you'll find yourself loving it in spite of your initial hesitations.

As to the demoes, Kairon beat me to it. I'd only add that, from the sounds of it, Nintendo's going to cycle their demos, like they do with the DS demos, so download the demos for whichever game(s) you're interested now, even if you're not going to play them until later. The Bit.Trip.Beat demo is a particularly good one, since it's the first third of the game, and will let you know if you want to shell out the $6 for the whole experience. Some folks love the series with a passion, others...not so much. And yeah, Void's the most gentle, while Beat's the most brutal.

As for being a passive gamer, well, you're in the right place! You may also want to check out the Nintendo Channel, as it seems to be made for folks like you. Fair warning though: there's plenty of cheese to go around there.
