At least they didn't continue the add-words-to-name pattern and name it "New Super Mario Bros. Wii 3DS".

Online co-op and/or custom levels = instabuy.
The Wii U controller would actually be perfect for creating custom levels. It could be something akin to the Mario vs DK level editors on DS.

Having played through all 16 worlds... I did not really enjoy this game. The first eight worlds are extremely easy and did not have the creativity posed in the Galaxy games. Sure it got harder when I got to Special World 1, but all those levels are just harder versions of ones I did not really enjoy in the first place, with shorter time limits and Dark Marios thrown in. The Special World 8 levels just felt like a chore.

The hodge-podge level designs don't really fit the game at all, going from snow world to desert to mountain... it makes sense in SM64 and Galaxy because you're going to distinct areas, but not where you're doing it in one small section of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Got Rhythm Heaven Fever last night. Monkey Watch feels like it's the hardest one of the bunch, because I just can't seem to get the timing right throughout.

I bought Trauma Team about two or three weeks ago. It's pretty awesome. I completed the whole story and am working on getting my high scores.

Why does there need to be a story?
Movies and video games are completely different mediums. Movies have a narrative in order to keep the audience interested. If Mario's running around doing crap without any purpose, why should the audience care about anything he does? Despite how cool and awesome the actions are, it will eventually become an absolute bore. It is why most "art films" are painful to watch.

Some people just like to watch Mario on a screen being played by someone else. I've spent a good amount of time watching gameplay videos on youtube of people playing Mario games.

Why would people (including those who don't even play video games) pay money to watch something they could just watch on Youtube for free?

Nintendo Gaming / Re: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
« on: February 04, 2012, 08:28:07 PM »

My quick thoughts on the game...

I have logged 82-83 hours into Skyward Sword so far. I'm in my second playthrough (Hero Mode) and I'm focusing a lot more on getting all the Goddess Cubes and doing all the side challenges. I'm still finding areas I have not seen before. As for the puzzles, they are very well designed, unlike Twilight Princess I never felt lost or completely baffled. In my second playthrough they are just as ingenious as they were the first time. I LOVE the characters of Skyloft-- I am actually more interested in helping them out even more than gaining the rewards for doing so.

The motion controls are solid. I have never had an issue with swordplay and I've often gone for many hours in one go without needing to recalibrate the Wii MotionPlus (pointer controls I do need to reset often, but that never gets in the way of things). However, the only time I don't feel that it's responsive enough is when I'm trying to deflect attacks with my shield and my Nunchuk movements aren't being registered (or I'm just slow).

The 4th and 5th dungeons are my favorite ones, but the last one is pretty awesome too. However, I liked the variety that TP offered, while Skyward Sword did feel like I was revisiting the same dungeons again later on (TP has 9 unique dungeons, Skyward Sword has 7). I'm a bit disappointed in how useless the treasures become later on (especially after you've upgraded everything).

All in all, Skyward Sword is an outstanding game.

This actually wasn't news to me. Miyamoto said back in 2010 that a 2D Mario for 3DS was in the works, alongside 3D Land.

Therefore, it is likely to show up at this year's E3.

3D Mario for Wii U has been in development since July, at least.

I was thinking for the long while how Wii U could be used to improve Wii Music. The Wii U controller could be used to write music in a Mario Paint like style, and the game would then calculate the harmonic "in-between" notes. That way, even if you write a completely original melody, Wii Music U can help create you more music based on this melody through its existing method of playing songs (with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk). This way, you could write a song, send it to another player and have them arrange it and send it back.

Sorry to revive this after two years, but here's a little something that I think no one has noticed--

the entire soundtrack for this game is available for purchase on iTunes. I went and bought it as soon as I discovered it there.

Since Majora's Mask was devloped for the N64 a few years after Ocarina of Time, so what if Retro Studios made the next home console Zelda title that took about two or three years to make versus the time it took Skyward Sword to be made.
That won't work because Majora's Mask used the same engine as Ocarina of Time, which allowed it to be developed in a shorter time, just like Super Mario Galaxy 2 came less than 3 years after the first.

The Star Spirits from Paper Mario were the hosts in Mario Party 5. Both Dry Dry Desert and Dry Dry Ruins appeared in the Mario Kart games.

Some of those games, like Yoshi's Island, could be re-released as 3D Classics, so I'll wait before immediately buying some of them.

Still waiting for successful PS3/60 exclusives to hit the Wii!! ^_^
They tried that with Dead Rising. It didn't work.

Well, maybe not because there is no announcements of anything besides that Zelda game.
Kirby Wii and Mario Party 9 don't count?

Also we didn't talk about Wii Music because it's such a forgettable title that none of us even thought to bring it up.
Thought it was because you had beaten it to death several times already.

I got Wii Play: Motion yesterday and found that "Trigger Twist" ("Shooting Range" from Wii Play with MotionPlus controls) uses M+ based pointing instead of the IR pointer. It's a bit disorienting at first because I've been hardwired to point directly at a screen for four years, but it allows you to point anywhere, giving you full 360 degree control. Given that Zelda will use something close to this type of control, I recommend checking it out in order to get a feel for the new system beforehand.

The MotionPlus in the game seems to be truly adapted from Wii Sports Resort -- Swordplay for controlling Link's sword, Bowling for rolling the bombs, and Air Sports for controlling the bird and scarab. Maybe Frisbee will be used for throwing shurikens.

Brand confusion. The name is confusing because it doesn't distinguish itself very much from its predecessor.
Didn't stop people who owned the "Nintendo Entertainment System" from buying the "Super Nintendo Entertainment System." Nor Playstation 1, 2, or 3.

Hmm... how does one use the pointer functionality for normal Wii games? If the controller also has IR sensors, it could work...
