TalkBack / Re: Miyamoto Hints at Wii Music Plus
« on: November 18, 2009, 01:44:40 PM »
I spent nearly 90 hours with the game and I absolutely loved it. I really like to see how an upgrade would work-- most likely more songs, and maybe more instruments. MotionPlus might work best on the drums, as it was often difficult to play them using the button presses and the swinging; and on Mii Maestro, for more precise movements (but I liked that game anyway).

I also find it easier to tilt those platforms [with the Wii Remote + Nunchuk].
How does it work? Do you point the Wii Remote up and down or do you twist it?

The only thing that bothered me about those platforms is that they made me notice how the distance of Mario's reflection from the surface never changes; it stays in the same spot even when Mario jumps. I also noticed that in the Garden dome, if you walk along the sides of the "wall", you can see Mario's shadow disappear in the squarish areas "occupied" by the rocks.

What I didn't like about Mario Galaxy's hub was how generic it felt despite how interesting it looked. It was more fun to jump around Peach's castle than it was to jump around the Comet Observatory. What I would've loved is some sort of gravity playground where you could mess around with the game's gravity system without having to re-visit the levels where it was most provident.

There were also two of Colbrat (the three-headed snake).
That was Triclyde. Colbrat was the snake that popped out from vases and spat bullets.

Awesome review.

Wii Music media reviews are automatically null since playing SIMPLE MUSIC is too much for non-casual reviewers to handle.
Actually, the problem reviewers had with the musical selection in Wii Music isn't that it was simple, but that it was ****ty.  A bunch of public domain music and a couple actual Nintendo songs in a Nintendo game?  Seriously?
Then again, IGNorant Matt actually stated months before release that he was going to rip apart Wii Music in his review, from what I heard. Don't mean to derail, but I think the songs were chosen because the wider audience Nintendo was going for would be most familiar with them than "Molgera Battle" or something.

Conduit had to have its graphical intensity toned down in online play so it could handle up to 11 other players elsewhere in the world.

Quote from: IGN review
However, I also encountered situations overrun with lag in which on-screen characters would skip around erratically, making maintained matches virtually unplayable.

Well said.

The Wii also has to lend a great deal of its processing power to handling player input, the graphics, the game physics, and so on. Adding an additional, continuous stream of incoming (and outgoing) data for the Wii to compute and interpret correctly (given that some data might be lost along the way) requires A LOT of power, which the Wii cannot handle without a few sacrifices. I would say it is why Brawl has some bad lag problems-- it is so graphically intense compared to Mario Kart Wii that it is bound to have slow-down when playing players on the other side of the planet. Conduit had to have its graphical intensity toned down in online play so it could handle up to 11 other players elsewhere in the world.

As far as I know, no online system is perfectly flawless. Look at Tetris Party: it's such a simple game, that it might be thought to be error-free. But the lag in that game is often horrendous. Sometimes even when the game ends on your side, the other person seems to continue playing, even for a whole minute! Online gaming isn't as simple as an IM.

TalkBack / Re: REVIEWS: Wii Fit Plus
« on: October 18, 2009, 06:50:29 PM »
I agree with your review. The custom routine option has really improved the game; it has motivated me to play the game each day, since picking each activity one after another felt like a chore. I don't mind the Aerobics and Balance games outside the My Routine, when I start up I do a round of Super Hula Hoop, then go straight to the Routine. Then I play a few Balance games before going back to the more intensive exercises, like Push-Up challenge.

I disagree however, with the comment of no new Aerobics games. Granted that the Training Plus games don't specifically say they're for "fat-burning," some activities, like Bird's-Eye Bulls Eye and Island Cycling, can be intense enough that you may break a sweat. While it is one of my favorites, I actually thought that Obstacle Course had the steepest learning curve, because I kept jumping at the wrong times.

My only major complaint is the number of glitches the game has in terms of keeping records. I have found some of the lower records in the activities become erased or some Yoga poses I that just did in My Routine don't show up in the "Recently" category of Favorites. Also, after a week of My Routine, the Balance Board comes up to me and says "You've been working in My Routine everyday now! You're on day 3!" In terms of the new games, the Driving Range feels broken in comparison to Wii Sports Resort golf, and in Big Top Juggling there are too many moments where I move one hand but both hands on the screen move, messing up what would be a crowning moment. Tricep Extension is the only dud exercise, as you have to quickly and constantly flick the Remote to tell it that you did 1 rep. Sometimes push-ups are not recognized by the game whilst doing them, so your score ends up lower than it should be.

I would! If all those Wii Fit units sold for $90 each, it's approximately 1.98 Billion dollars. More than what Titanic made in the box office.

Intro to the game.

Apparently, Miyamoto's suggestion that Bowser uses a cake to kidnap Peach was true...

No, SMB2J came before Doki Doki Panic, and it had differing play styles.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What are your most-played Wii games?
« on: October 09, 2009, 03:36:03 PM »
More like 5 times.  ;D

Too bad the GCN couldn't easily log any of this, I wanted to see how much I've played Luigi's Mansion, when I played through it 30+ times, and PMTTYD, at 6 times.

I completed LoZTP three times, and got 121 stars with both Mario and Luigi in Super Mario Galaxy twice. I am in my third playthrough, at 103 stars with Mario. However, I have also played up to 60 stars in another file with my mother in Co-Star mode.

Everyone in my family plays Wii Sports and Wii Fit, but I make up the bulk of that time.

I also never realized that I played Wii Music or Animal Crossing that long.

My least played game is Link's Crossbow Training, at 2 minutes, 1 time.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Unofficial Wi-Fi Night - Mario Kart Wii Autumn Tour

Is there going to be a voice chat between players via Skype or something? If not, it's all right. I'll record the event with my laptop camera if possible.

I can't think of any characters/vehicles I'd want to veto. Only the three characters listed are the only ones who are a bit irritating.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Professor Layton movie
« on: October 06, 2009, 12:19:22 PM »
What do you mean by "the usual rules?" Like, it contains many of the elements from the games but makes an attempt to create a storyline that ends by being completely unlike the original idea? I don't know. The only animated movie I've seen based on a video game was the Animal Crossing movie, and it followed the direction of AC:WW quite well, in my opinion. For example, the concepts of working for Tom Nook, moving in, other residents moving out, were all worked into the storyline in a way that felt natural.

However, I've never played Professor Layton (I plan to at some point) so I wouldn't be able to tell what are based from the game or not.

If anyone's noticed, this trailer is practically a carbon copy of the trailer from E3. Both start with the propeller suit on a grassland level, then it's penguin suit in an ice level, then underwater, then Mario uses the spin to blow away clouds, then Mario and Luigi in a desert level with erupting sand, etc. Same level themes and situations in the same exact order.

I was completely turned off by Scribblenaut's bad control, which led me to sell it away a week after purchase. Like someone said in the Scribblenauts thread, it felt like I was playing with a prototype, like the controls were thrown in only to get the main idea to work.

Japanese introductory video to Wii Fit Plus.

It says that there's 69 activities total. Two of which are variations of cycling and golf. An IGN screenshot shows that there will be at least one more Balance Test.

I'm picking up this game on Sunday.

And the Wii models are simply the DD models with the shine added.
That was the first thing I noticed when I saw the character select screen. All the characters that were present in DD sported the same exact "I've been chosen" pose. I suppose the graphics were compromised in favor of lag-less online play. The only thing disappointing compared to DD is that MKWii's game framefate is so much lower when three or more players are involved in local play (even when all the computer players are removed), or when two players go online together.

The only thing I didn't like about M&LBiS is that the locations in the Mushroom Kingdom felt watered-down. I did not particularly like exploring those areas; they felt too large, without a lot of special or interesting features placed in. It might be because I'm so used to PiT's overworld, where every location was distinct, so BiS's world felt too uniform and familar (the only town for goodness sake was Toad Town. BeanBean Kingdom had much more to see.) Plus just about every other enemy was Fawful-related, which got old after a while.
