General Gaming / Re: What are you playing?
« on: August 15, 2018, 10:58:17 PM »
We Happy Few - Picked this one up on PS4 out of morbid curiosity, and I've reached the 3rd major area (Maidentown). So far, I'm not sure what to make of the game. I'm not having an unenjoyable time with the game. In fact, this is the furthest I've ever gotten into a Survival Game, and the story is excellent. Unfortunately, all the stuff around the story...isn't. Suffice it to say I've spent a lot of time dancing around really dumb enemies poking at them with my non-lethal umbrella and collecting a whole lot of crap so I can haul it to a locker so I can make 1-2 things I actually want and tons of stuff I don't.

Onrush - I just picked this one up today because it was on sale & with a $10 coupon I could get it for $30. I put a few hours into its campaign mode, and so far I'm quite enjoying it. It's from the makers of DriveClub...except it plays absolutely nothing like DriveClub. It's an Arcade-y racing game where the only buttons you need to worry about are Brake; Accelerate; boost; & ultra-boost ("Rush" mode).

The game plays like if you combined a racing game with the sensibilities of a team deathmatch multiplayer shooter like Titanfall and then took away the guns & the finish line. You play on one of two teams that go roaring around a looped off-road track trying to knock out the other racers & perform tricks & combo chains. To spice things up, there are dumb "fodder" enemies there for the sheer purpose of you crashing with a single touch to get more boost energy (hence the Titanfall comparison). Each type of vehicle functions like a "Class" in a MP shooter, with each vehicle having certain roles & special abilities that activate when you fill your "Rush" meter by constantly using your Boost.

I've seen a handful of event types so far: a "Best of 5" round mode where each team attempts to reach a certain number of points first; a "Best of 3" mode where each team attempts to extend a timer by repeatedly driving through a series of gates; and a unique mode where everyone starts with 3 lives & the weakest vehicle in the game for combat (the motorcycle). When you die, you have to move up to the next slowest vehicle class (but with more combat ability). First team to lose all its lives loses. When you lose all 3 lives, you move to the slowest vehicle class & play the spoiler.

So far, I'm liking what I see. The game has an attitude to it that reminds me of Split/Second, a racing game I loved on PS3 that also colossally failed because it was too unique from standard racing games. *sigh* However, I do think $30 is around what the game is worth, because already the game seems very limited (also like Split/Second).

I wonder why they didn't bother porting the original version of Galak-Z. Yeah, it was unfinished, but it was way better than...this.

Finished Chasm tonight on PS4, a game that released exactly one week before Dead Cells.

Just go play Dead Cells instead. Yeah, Chasm is a "real" Metroid-style Castlevania knock-off, but it's extremely average. I had an enjoyable 12 hours with it, and feel no real compulsion to go back to it.

I've now finished Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans and...wow...that ending. I've seen that thing split people right down the middle: some thinking it ruined the entire series, and others thinking it was absolutely perfect.

I'm not sure how I feel about it, but I can say one thing: it's the most brutal, most vicious, most fatalistic ending in Gundam history. Yes, even more than 0080. It plays war completely straight, pulling none of the narrative cheats that Gundam traditionally uses in its effort to tell a story about noble heroes defeating evil in the face of impossible odds.

The heroes don't overcome impossible odds. They lose. Badly. Every single major fighting character dies (along with most of the minor ones), and almost all the villains survive. And the world is a better place because of it.

I'm going to have to take some time & decompress a bit over this. This was a really awesome show that ended in an incredibly brutal, depressing way. And yet, it's probably my favorite Gundam series for its focus on tactics over magic & never activating the plot armor. Characters die a lot in this series, and the show feels incredibly honest for that reason.

To be fair, it is a party platform fighter, so buying it to play as your favorite Nintendo characters by yourself and complaining about a lack of single player content is...

...perfectly reasonable considering the history of Smash Bros. From the original through Brawl, we had a steady increase of Single-player content from classic mode to Adventure mode, and then finally to Subspace Emissary. It wasn't until the Wii U version that Nintendo cheaped-out on the single-player offerings.

And no, glorified ladders (Classic & All Stars) isn't compelling single-player content. I want to run around in the worlds & explore. That's why I liked those aspects of Adventure mode & Emissary. Never played much of Smash Run on the 3DS, but it seemed alright.

Well, 3rd party support on Nintendo consoles is always a bit of a slippery slope. It could be all downhill from here with the big Western AAA 3rd party ports.

Tip your waiter, folks. We could do this all night.

The secret condition that Dracula will appear under is that he will only appear every 100 years.

My bet's on a variation of the Konami Code.

I'm a bit disappointed that the game doesn't have any real Single player content outside of Classic Mode. Still, other than that? Wow.

1259
At work so I couldn't watch the Direct, but did they announce any SP content beyond Classic mode? In a game marked "Ultimate", I'd have liked to see at least Adventure Mode return.

That said, they gave me all of the stages & some fantastic new characters in Simon Belmont, King K. Room, and Shovel Knight (and Dark Samus is here for...some reason). Overall, I'm quite happy with what's here.

1260
Simon Belmont would pretty much complete my list of iconic 3rd party characters you could realistically see in a Smash Bros. game. I mentioned this on Twitter, but I'd love it if his Final Smash was like MegaMan's or (IIRC) Shulk's, where he summons all the Belmonts together in one big attack.

1261
Word also going around is that the original Spyro assets either don't exist anymore or Activision was unable to acquire them from Insomniac, so Activision basically had to remake all 3 games from scratch. When you consider that modern games are typically 20-30 GB a pop (for reference, the 2016 remake of Ratchet & Clank was 28 GB), it's not that surprising for it to be 50 GB for 2 games.

That said, this strengthens my theory that these will be download codes, not a patch.

Oh, and if you think that install is huge, try looking up how large Doom or Battlefront 2's current install sizes are. They're both near 100 GB.

1262
$60 for a port of an 11 year old DS game? Go home, Square Enix. You're drunk.

I'm not a fan of the guy, but seems wrong to remove anyone from the Walk of Fame. Maybe remove it until some time in the future?

Yeah, I get the economical perspective that if they keep replacing it, jerks are just going to keep destroying it right now and that gets really expensive. Maybe relocate a new one to the Smithsonian or the Trump Presidential Library.

Finally taking the time to listen to this. that intro is amazing.

Thank you! I spend a lot of time on these E3 intros every year, and this year's just refused to export correctly.

Die Hard: Finally got to watch it Uncensored with no commercials. 9/10

It was always on TV growing up but i never want to watch the shitty TBS/TNT version.
Man, I can't even remember the last time I willingly watched a movie broadcast on TV. It would have to have been the late 90s or early 2000s.

I played a bit of it on PS4, and I thought it was a bit overcomplicated & yet too limited for my tastes. You have to manage a card-based loadout, and then purchasing upgrades ON that loadout on top of managing the shifting needs of a battle. When I last played it, it had 2 whole modes, and they weren't that different.

It seemed like a cool game, but I just couldn't get a feel for the characters & was kind of bored with the limited game modes.

Due to various real life complications, the E3 show will be Shaymin's last as host, as he transitions towards focusing on NWR staff work going forward. It's been a blast shooting the gaming & TV breeze with him for the last 6 years, and we wish him well in his work on the site.

Of course, that also means that a chair's open-ed up for a new 3rd seat on the show, temporary & otherwise. Feel free to let us know if you want to be on the show!

Man, I know that Summer used to be when everyone ran their re-runs, but who'd have thought that Nintendo would re-run their E3 showcase? :P

As Shigeru Miyamoto once said: a delayed game is eventually good, a bad game gets fixed by day one patches.
Unless you're Star Fox 0 or Duke Nukem Forever, in which case you'll always be bad.

1270
That's why I wonder if this even is a patch. The box could very easily say "Requires online update" or something to that effect. Instead, it outright states that only 1 game is on the disc & the other 2 have to be downloaded. It's really strange wording if this is just a mandatory patch.

It's also worth noting that the PS4 also hasn't really had a big Japan-centric game this year outside of Valkyria Chronicles 4. Last year, the PS4 had tons of them, but Japan isn't really the region for God of War or Detroit: Become Human.

Well, a small, little game series that Japan seldom pays attention to called Monster Hunter had a release that was launched this past January in Japan. I don't think it did anything to sales this year, though.  :-\

Forgot that came out this year in Japan, mostly because it's not very good. :P

1272
I have a suspicion of what this is about, because otherwise this move makes no sense. A double-layered BluRay disc can hold just about anything a modern game could put out, and I doubt even that would be needed to hold these remasters.

My suspicion is that Spyros 2 & 3 are download codes on a slip of paper in the case, not patches. Why? To destroy the 2nd hand market by forcing Gamestop, etc. to purchase new download codes from them whenever they want to sell a used copy of the Spyro Collection. Because otherwise they're selling 1 game advertised as 3.

It's just a theory, but it's evil enough to be Activision.

Well, I've finished Gravity Falls and...eh, it was good, I guess. I don't see where all the hype is coming from. The first season is just so formulaic and so focused on the tedious would-be love lives of the 2 main characters, which I couldn't possibly give any less of a **** about. The second season strongly focuses the show on the core mystery & features much sharper writing (and the ending is fantastic), but for me it just can't make up for how long it took the show to get to an interesting point.

It was consistently pleasant, but that's about as much praise as I feel it deserves.

I liked Gravity Falls because it felt like an animated X-files but they had enough sense to wrap it up and make sense in a much shorter amount of time.

I liked it well enough, but it was just missing...something, and I think that "something" might have been the writers' spines. The show reminds me a lot of Star Wars Rebels in some ways, in that it feels like the show spends a great deal of time spinning its wheels because the powers that be didn't want the show to introduce themes darker than what preschoolers could handle. So there's no death, very little character development, bumbling villains beaten with very little effort, and no lasting consequences of any kind.

What you get as a trade-off is a series that's consistently pleasant, but doesn't feel like it ever has any stakes until the very last few episodes. And it's really hard for me to get invested in a show where it feels like nothing matters.
