Podcast Discussion / Re: RFN RetroActive Game Nominations
« on: March 07, 2010, 08:52:33 PM »
I'd like to see a cross-platform retroactive on Street Fighter II. Each person could play one or two versions of the game, then compare and contrast the various versions of the game. If I recall correctly, the versions available on VC are:

1. SFII (SNES)
2. Special Championship Edition (Genesis)
3. Championship Edititon (TG-16)
4. Turbo (SNES)
5. Super (SNES)

2. Admittedly, it is a weird kind of game (oddly enough, one of the digitized photos slightly resembes Jim Brass of CSI). As far as I know, it's also the only VC game that uses the SNES mouse (though that isn't implemented on VC). One really fun thing you can do is when you win the game (get $10 million) you get to say what you'll do with the money. There's a great video on YouTube of someone playing with that. By the way, this game is statistically beatable in several ways:

1. Betting and resetting if you lose.
2. Hideaway $5/Buffalo Head $25 slots (both have returns over 100%)
3. Poker (if you can beat the computer AI-I was never that good).
4. Blackjack (as far as I know, you can card count without getting kicked out).

There's also a host of NPC encounters (1-player only) in which you can win money or lose money on the side.

Overall, it's an okay game that might be fun in a party setting (no poker in multiplayer, of course). Tournament blackjack anyone?

By the way TYP, the music isn't nearly as good when you have to listen for hours on end.

Guess it's time for me to put in another request.

TalkBack / Re: DS2 Might Get Announced At E3
« on: March 02, 2010, 09:14:12 PM »
Things I see coming:

-Bluetooth (used to sync up with third party peripherals a'la Guitar Hero)
-Additional analog input option (not just accelerometer support, but something they can use to function like a control stick for that DS Smash Bros we keep asking for)
-Easier online connections (possibly tethering or pass-through with Wii/WiiHD)
-Higher res screens (at least 320*240 each) 21/24-bit color support would be nice as well.
-Portable VC (definitely GB/GBC/GBA/GG, possibly console games as well)

Would-be-nices:
Mobile TV
FM/HD Radio

Kept from previous generations:
-Cameras (maybe higher res-1 MP would be good enough)
-Browser (probably pre-installed)
-SD Card Slot

Other possiblities:
-Dual touchscreens

TalkBack / Re: This Week in Nintendo Downloads

This week in Nintendo downloads brings us eight new games across Nintendo's digital platforms, with  three for WiiWare, one for Virtual Console, and five for DSiWare.

Sorry to point this out, but there are only 4 DSiWare games.

Wow I had no idea the game was only an hour long!  :(

Yeah, but's it's also only 500 points. If you liked Retro Game Challenge, you'll like this too. This also begs another question though-why aren't Mega Man 9/10 on DSiWare?

One question I do have (and a comparison to CT) is that you always have Mario in your party. If you had complete freedom (like after Crono "dies"), what would your team be?

One thing I will point out is that enemy attacks aren't really diverse enough, particularly in the end. If you've spent the time to go through everything, there aren't many surprises in the final boss.

I would not have nominated GS for GotD, despite my love for the game, though I probably would have nominated Pokemon were the category franchise of the decade. Also, I think WarioWare was probably highly influenced by earlier compilation games such as Action 52, with the major difference that you only had to play the games for 5 seconds at a time (and the games actually had compentent programming). Still, great discussion by all involved.

One tip: When you level up, you get to boost one set of stats. Be sure to check all three-one generally has a bigger boost than the others.

I've only played 4 of these games (I have no interest in RE4, and though I have MM on the Zelda compilation, I've heard from this podcast that the emulation there is poor). I am going to make the very odd decision that Melee should be named GotD based primarily on my experiences with its single-player. I didn't have many opportunities to play multiplayer Melee, but I loved single player. I could play the 1P modes over and over again (more than I could say for the Subspace Emissary in Brawl), and somehow it never got old. Plus the music is fantastic. If I had to give out an honorable mention, I'd pick Galaxy, even though I may have played less of it than Lindy.

3. When I submitted this game, I wasn't sure if it actually had 3 songs. Glad to hear it does. ;) One thing you can do is use the " JOSHUA " (with spaces) password to explore the game as you please. I actually liked it quite a bit when I played that way, and would buy it on VC if it came out (unlikely, since it's a licensed game from a basicaly defunct publisher).
4. I actually thought this was Let's Catch, since it seemed to sound a lot like Let's Tap.

3) The special attacks are pretty useless. I'm finding myself avoiding all of my special moves, save for Princess Toadstool's healing powers. (Is it odd that I want to call her Peach now? This game taught me that she tastes "peachy"....)

Better than like chicken (a line used in another Square RPG). ;) I agree that the special attacks are mostly useless, with the exception of Mallow's thunderbolt and Mario's flame attacks, and of course Peach's healing moves. Speaking of Peach, while she does have the typical female RPG character healing moves, she does not have the typical ranged weapons you see-she gets in there and takes it to the enemies, sometimes with her (almost) bare hands. Aside from the Mario 3 cartoon, this may be the best Princess.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Next Gen Pokemon confirmed for DS
« on: February 05, 2010, 09:19:55 PM »
Reading up on this stuff makes me want to get my GB Player back from my brother and start playing through Pokemon Ruby again.  That damn game came out like a week before Wind Waker so I shifted interest VERY quickly and never returned.  Now I'm thinking I should restart it and beat the game this time.

If it makes you feel any better, I still haven't beaten Platinum. I made the mistake of trying for a "no-death" run in hopes of seeing an alternate final boss.

It'll probably support the extra Wi-fi channels and have an optional camera feature.

One thing that's really amazing is how quickly you reach the 999 coin maximum-it's really easy, particularly compared to the M&L games. That's probably why they introduced the alternative Frog Coin system.

When I sent in the letter, I thought, "it's a good idea, but what's the game?" I can see you were faced with the same quandry. Maybe if Red Steel 2 does well, we'll see more Motion Plus action. By the way, I'm still waiting for New Play Control! Pokemon Channel.

There are many places in the level to grind if you want. In the Mushroom Kindom when the Pogo stick Shyguys take over the castle.

There are a lot of places with infinitely streaming enemies in this game. Nintendo Power even suggested using a turbo controller in one of them and leaving the game on until you hit level 30.

I actually really like the isometric perspective, especially after playing M&L 3. It feels like the game has a lot more depth since it takes place entirely in 3D, rather than the mostly 2D of the new DS game. It makes it feel liike there's a lot more exploration and physical space (even though I've long since found just about evey thing else in the game).

Can't wait to start playing this again. I've also been working through M&L BIS lately, so it should be interesting to compare the two. One thing I really liked about SMRPG was that the size of the game seemed just right, never dragging on. Oddly enough, I've had a few occasions (on my SNES copy) where I've lost my save file midgame and been forced to start over, killing my intrest in the game at the time. Weird, huh?

By the way, for those of you playing on LCD TVs, I strongly reccomend you play on VC so you can use component inputs to avoid any input lag problems. For an RPG, this one is definitely timing-sensitive.

By the way, be sure to play that vocal version of the forest theme on the podcast. "Super Mar-i-o RPG is the only one..." Sorry.

NWR is the NPR of video game podcast. I love it. It's very refreshing.

I keep thinking TYP should do a "Support for NPR comes from..." spoof the next time Radio Trivia ends with classical/jazz music. ;)

I take it you don't watch DVD/BR movies very often, don't have a HDTV with PC/media center connected to it or don't have you computer in a position that is easy to watch from somewhere extremely comfortable to sit/lay (like your bed).

Actually, I do have a Blu-Ray player (just finished watching the original Turtles movie). I think that Netflix streaming on Wii just has that instant gratification/convience factor I've been missing.

Part of the reason that HD makes development more expensive is that you really do have to put more effort in. When TV started going HD in the late 90's/early 2000's, production values had to go up because there was increased scrutiny with the higher resolution. Sets and makeup that looked good in standard def sometimes looked tacky or cheap in HD. Similar issues come up with Wii/DS crossover games.

Also, 480p makes a huge difference on LCD TVs because those TVs can only display progressive images. If a 480i (composite, S-video, and component in interlaced mode) image is used, the TV has to try to figure out whether it should do no deinterlacing (the signal is 480i but the images are really 480p30), pure deinterlacing (480i60), or attempt to inverse telecine the video (typically 24 fps film footage). This can also introduce input lag.

I looked that up after we recorded. If I understand correctly, those cards don't actually have Pokemon in them, but give you items and allow you to battle additional trainers. That's kind of lame, imo.

1.I figured you might have looked it up later. Too bad there's no podcast annotation feature. Admittedly, this wasnot the best use of the e-reader, though there were actually some specific berries you could only get that way. Also, the Eon Ticket was distributed this way.
