The other thing they might be doing is contacting local media to see if they get someone to drop by for a brief story.  That's one benefit of having the trained representative there.

I'd be wary of using forum opinion as a barometer of public reaction-at this stage, the people most likely (but not the only ones) to complain are those unable to make it to one of the stores. Most of those planning to visit are withholding judgement until they go.

I had wondered if they'd be doing anything for it since it's a worldwide release-this should be the biggest presence since 1998 when it first came over.

Be on the lookout for the Pokemon Smash People. They'll be there.

One place the 24-hour thing could really hurt is if you take your system on vacation (not uncommon on road trips) and your timeshare doesn't have Wi-Fi. That could be an issue. Conventions might have issues too if their game room doesn't have wireless.

To be honest, I was expecting "Xbox 1080" (to emphasize 1080p graphics), or something that didn't involve numbers at all. I'm curious to know what other names they considered but rejected.

I guess everyone really is Super Sonic Racing. If I had more free time and wasn't busy unlocking music in PMD 3DS, I'd have played much more of it.

Anyone know how big the update was? I'd guess somewhere in the hundreds of megabytes.

134
It's obviously Mew Zero, the artificially sweetened Pokemon with 0 calories.

Wii U Netflix itself also seems to have gotten an update. Any ideas what it did?

I wish your physical vs digital discussion had someone more pro-digital. IMO, there are definite advantages that should have been explored more.

-Song is referring to this.
-For the unaware, "Nihon" is the Japanese word for Japan (much like how "Deutschland" is the German word for Germany).

Ode to Arino
Parody of “Angry Video Game Nerd Theme” by Kyle Justin
With new lyrics by Steven “PokePress” Reich

He’s gonna take you back to the past,
To play the classic games he #*! at.
He’d rather fight a buffalo
Than watch Dhalsim getting punched in his ear
He’s gonna fall for every trap hole
If you think he's sunk, I guess you're new here

It’s the gamiest center you’ve ever heard,
He’s the Nihon Nintendo nerd
He’s the Nihon Konami Sega nerd
He’s the Nihon video game nerd

Don’t you turn off your TV
He’s gonna make it-wait and see!
Arino’s thumbs may hurt, he may break a sweat
Although he’s cornered our guy will never back down
He’ll grab a cooling pad, no he ain’t done yet
Armed with his helpers he will take these games down

It’s the gamiest center you’ve ever heard,
He’s the Nihon Nintendo nerd
He’s the Nihon SNK Capcom nerd
He’s the Nihon video game nerd

He brings the worst game of all time
Pitiful annihilations blow my mind
But when he starts each marathon, he says:
Arino: GameCenter CX! Kacho-On!

From eight on up to sixty-four bit
This show is huge you know it’s a hit
Where did he learn to swim?
Why can’t he land a plane?
What were they thinking when they gave him this game?
His strategy’s always wrong
Let’s help him get along
Come on now ADs go do your thing!

It’s the gamiest center you’ve ever heard,
His game #*! so bad-hey watch out for that bird!
He’s the genkiiest most retro gaming nerd
He’s the Nihon Irem Namco Tecmo Sunsoft Hudson Soft
Sony Neo Geo Falcom Quintet Data East Vic Tokai Game Freak Nintendo Nerd
He’s the Nihon video game nerd

3. My sister got this game for her third birthday in 1990-I was on the high end of the 2-6 recommended age bracket. The music (what little there is) is pretty much the best thing there is about it. Too bad they never made a Mathnet point-and-click adventure game.

Video is nice, but for these types of comparisons, given the compression factor of YouTube, it's probably better to zoom in on some stills and make a comparison there. In any event, overall, I'd say they're pretty comparable.

Personally I'd prefer Google Earth for 3DS, but that's probably beyond the system's capabilities.

If you omitted video, you'd probably end up with this:

At least that way you'd only be exposed to Hoenn Pokerap (IMO, the worst piece of official Pokemon music in any language ever).

Something tells me it's not Pokemon DJ Hero or Pokemon Rumble Blast Corps, but hey, I can dream, right?

It'll be interesting to see if they can actually pull off a 3-year 5th generation and get 6th gen out next year.

As far as the resolution thing goes, from what I can tell the system does not render the Wii games in HD, however, they probably do look slightly better because the Wii stretches the 480p image in the digital domain, whereas your TV is scaling the analog 480p component image (after redigitizing it) to whatever your TV's native resolution is.

My thoughts:

Free Mario Levels: Pretty cool, though I hope there's more to come in this vein.
Wii U Power: I think I'll repeat what my mom says about IQ: It's just a number-it's what you do with it that counts. Also, I think it was pretty inevitable that even if the Wii U was/is appreciably better, we'd still hear complaints of it being underpowered from somebody.

TalkBack / Re: Wii Mini Has No SD Card Slot
« on: December 03, 2012, 12:05:31 AM »
You guys are really missing the point. Nintendo designed this to increase their profit margin for legacy Wii sales, not just now but for years to come. The people who will consider buying a Wii at this point don't care about the features being removed. Omitting components gives Nintendo flexibility to eventually lower the price even further to continue squeezing out sales from a very old platform. This tradition goes back to the mid-90s with the redesigns of NES, SNES, and even Genesis.

Perhaps, but I don't think either the NES or SNES redesigns took as much away functionally as this redesign. Is there a market for it? Probably, but at the moment it doesn't seem like that much of a plus.

By the way, does anyone know how much smaller it is? I've seen the pictures, but nothing side-by-side (might have to wait until it releases). The Wii's pretty small to begin with, so I'm not sure how "Mini" this will be.

Guess Nintendo should have put a blast processing module in the Wii U.  ;)

It's virtually impossible to compare hardware specs these days, as there are so many variables involved in performance, not to mention the needs of the game being played.

So I've been using this for a day or so, and I have to say, the picture quality is pretty good for Wii (provided, of course, that the source material is good), though not quite up there with HD devices in terms sharpness (not a completely fair comparison) or color saturation. The interface is good (the Wiimote makes for better navigation than a standard remote), but unfortunately the keyboard is not supported. Audio quality is good as well, with clear stereo. One issue I've noticed is that when one video proceeds automatically to the next, the upper overlay seems to stick around until the pointer is waved over the screen. Overall, a good experience, certainly better than using the Wii browser.

I'd prefer one that let us view 3d videos on the 3ds, but oh well, hopefully that's coming.

FYI, the movie 12, 13, and 14 Blu-Rays from Australia are region-free (despite being marked "B" on the back), and will play in US Blu-Ray players (though they do contain 25 fps PAL video, which can be a problem for some players/TVs).

In any case, nice collections, though I really wish they'd just sell the episodes digitally at this point.

In addition, there is now a narrator who (I presume) correctly pronounces the names of each and every Pokémon. Who knew the "c" in Arceus is actually a hard one?

The narrator is the same voice that is used for the Pokedex in the current version of the anime.

And yes, it is a hard c. Had you watched movie 12, you would know that.  ;)
