I say Nintendo should port some of their best N64 titles to GCN for $10.

baaaaaaaaaaad idea.  almost as bad as making it a habit of giving away free bonus discs with games.

if nothing else, look at it this way:

while it may cost very little to port a n64 game over to gc, they would be missing out on lost revenue from selling new games.  for every hour you're reliving a port of a n64 game you're not experiencing a new gc game.  the less time you spend playing new gc games, the less money you spend on gc games.

i can't speak for everyone, but i know when i got zelda:  master quest for free with wind waker, it saved me from having to purchase a different gc game to keep me occupied during the month before wind waker came out.  therefore, nintendo lost $50 they would have received from me for releasing the bonus disc.  i'm sure i'm not the only one who didn't get a different game because they were too busy playing master quest.

i'm going to throw out some fake numbers to prove my point.  let's pretend 25% of the people who got wind waker wouldn't have gotten it unless master quest was given away for free with it (this is a very generous estimate).  now let's pretend 50% of the people who got wind waker did not purchase another gc game they would have otherwise gotten, because they were playing master quest.  if wind waker sold 1 million copies (i'm lowering the number to make it easier on my math) nintendo lost 250,000 sales.  multiply that by average dollars per sale (i have no idea on this one...10?  20?  i'll pretend $10 for discussion's sake) and nintendo lost $2.5 million by releasing the master quest disc for free with wind waker.

you could argue that by giving away the free game disc, it sold more wind waker units, which sold more console units, and therefore increases the potential for future revenue by getting more gamecube units out there, but as i already alluded to before, people bought wind waker to play wind waker.  the bonus disc was a nice addition, but i do not think it pushed sales by that much (preorders, yes.  but not overall sales).

in short, it's my estimate that nintendo loses money by releasing bonus discs (containing full games; demo discs are another story all together).  my numbers are based on pure speculation, so if anyone have any hard numbers they'd like to throw out, please do.

***

but as long as we're taking about what games we'd like to see as bonus discs, i wouldn't mind that remixed starfox for snes that everyone's taking about.

Nintendo Gaming / Japans hardware sales. GC up 19000 in a week?

I heard about this and if true could bring the TOTAL downfall of xbox in japan.

you mean you think it hasn't happened already?

xbox sold something like 750 units last week compared to gc's 20,900.  (neither of which compare to ps2's 46,900, but who's counting?)

So Arria of Sorrow is the best Castlevania?

it's by far the most enjoyable game if you have an original gba.  if you have either a gba sp or a gameboy player, then it's still probably the best, but circle of the moon is right up there.

If I'm not mistaken didn't Blinx the Timesweeper also use a vacuum? I'm almost 100% positive it did... makes sense calling it the TimeSWEEPER... (i.e. stole idea from Nintendo)

you're right...blinx did use a vacuum.  but that doesn't mean it's related.

marge used a vacuum in the simpsons arcade game.  but i wouldn't declare that it's related to either luigi's mansion or blinx.

Nintendo Gaming / Are the X-Box or PS2's really so superior?

Yet, with all my complaints, I still own one. Why? First I'm a hardcore nut, but second, and most importantly, there is always that one game you can't play elsewhere. For me it was GTA3/GTA:VC. However, with Rockstar ending it's exclusivity deal w/ sony, and no hopes for future, unique titles. I doubt very much that I will own a PS3. You can count me as yet another victim of the Ps2 hype machine. (I slept in front of a store all night to get mine, never gonna do that again)

wait a sec...gta wasn't a ps2 launch title....  something's amiss....

Funny; i didn't even know there was a PGC review until i read this thread. Don't know how that slipped by.

correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe it was posted during e3, when there were roughly 40 news topics each day.  probably got lost in there (or even scrolled off the page before you saw it).

i noticed that, too.  i found it odd, because in previous foxtrot strips, he'd use made-up consoles/games, with the name being a combination of several titles (i.e. doomathon and gamestation).

« on: June 03, 2003, 12:41:49 PM »
i vaguely remember hearing something about a nintendo project called megaton around 6 months ago.  i'm pretty sure it was determined to be a rumor/hoax, but i never really found out what it was supposed to be.  can someone fill me in?  thanks.

i had been holding off reading this post for well over a month now, because i wanted to beat the game first.  now that i've read all the posts, i just have to stand back for a second and say who cares?  i agree with whoever compared the storylines with final fantasy...while it's true that each game is connected in some way or another, they don't have to follow everything directly.  it's a different story, different game.  enjoy each one as a single game, and don't try to read too much into connecting each one.

on a side note, how come no one argues about the order of the mario games?

first good game?  what about rogue leader?  that's available for $20 at most locations.

TalkBack / Nintendo Sales and Profits Fall Again
« on: May 22, 2003, 11:18:27 AM »
someone always has to say it, so it might as well be me...

even though sales are down, nintendo is still posting a net gain of $562 million.  that's still pretty darn good, especially compared to the competition.  most companies i know can't make $562 million dollars and then be pissed off because they didn't make more.

Nintendo Gaming / castlevania: aria of sorrow
« on: May 16, 2003, 10:57:05 AM »
i'm actually kinda tired of people complaining that this game is too easy.  it's only easy if you make is easy.

if you want to make it harder try some of the following tactics:

(1)  don't use any health/magic pick-ups
(2)  don't go to a save room to restore your health every time you run low
(3)  don't use the best weapons/armor/accessories
(4)  don't kill lots of bad guys (doing so increases your experience)

the designers had to make the game playable for younger children/people who don't have lots of videogame skills.  if you want a challenge, make one yourself.  personally, i like to use that little dagger you get right towards the beginning of the game.  it forces you to get close to enemies, making it more of a challenge to not get hit.

this is just a suggestion.  if you'd rather wear golden armor and save every 3 minutes, and then complain that the game is too easy, be my guest.

TalkBack / Buy a GameCube, get the Game Boy Player FREE
« on: May 16, 2003, 05:08:45 AM »
i need some clarification:  will the gamecubes that are bundled with the gameboy player still receive a free game, or is it an either or situation

i.e. you get a gamecube and either (1) a free $50 game or (2) a free $50 gameboy player, or do you get both?

is anyone else totally unimpressed by the screen shots of the new mega man on gamecube?  the backgrounds looks rather sweet, but the characters (mega man, especially) look pretty poor.  and i was hoping for big things out of this game....

Nintendo Gaming / SP screen "shadow"
« on: May 13, 2003, 08:43:21 AM »
i really don't think it's a big of a deal except when playing castlevania: aria of sorrow.  it can make reading the map a pain in the butt.  i find it difficult to tell the difference between the "shadow" and a section of the map where i haven't been yet.  (i had this same problem for circle of the moon; i skipped harmony of dissonance.)

anyone else notice that soma moon walks (in a forward direction) everywhere he goes?  anyone else find that slightly odd, if not disturbing?  i mean, if i were in a haunted castle, surrounded by ghosts, and zombies, and all sorts of other devilish creatures, i sure as hell wouldn't moon walk around at a leisurely pace.  maybe that's just me.
