In honor of Freshly Picked: Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland being released in Europe today I declare that everyone needs to have a Tingle-themed avatar immediately.

Mario's already in the clear.  The rest of you louses need to rectify this situation ASAP.

Nintendo Gaming / Metroid Prime 3

As always, I'm avoiding all spoilers with this game, so I dare not go into the Metroid Prime 3 thread.  Can anyone tell me if there are any one-time items and/or scans (besides bosses) that I need to be on the lookout for?  I'm a completionist, and I want to make sure I don't miss anything.

In order to celebrate our heritage (and the fact that we tend to know more about old video games than most people) I declare August is Semi-Obscure Sixteen-Bit Video Game Character Month!!

Pick a character (any character) from a sixteen-bit video game (SNES, or otherwise). Original sprites are encouraged, however, artwork and/or renderings (official or fan-made) are accepted. According to the rules, you shouldn't pick major characters (no Mario, Link, Samus, etc). A general rule of thumb: if your mom knows who the character is, they're not obscure enough.

I'm surrounded by goddamn Wizards.

I almost hit a line of kids in witch hats crossing the street on my way home from work.  There's two dozen freaks in plastic black cloaks and wire-rimmed glasses playing Quidditch in the park across the street from my home.  After Olive went number two on our evening walk I saw a fat kid with a lightning bolt drawn on her forehead; it took all my resolve not to whip the baggie at her parents for letting her leave the house like that.

Tomorrow can't come soon enough.

General Gaming / PSP Slim
« on: June 08, 2007, 03:25:41 AM »
Original Post:  June 8, 2007

According to Kotaku, there's unofficial confirmation that Sony is redesigning the PSP.

PSP Slim Details Revealed

It's a redesign of the current version, not the PSP2, so it will have the same internal hardware.

Features:
-Slimmer design
-New LED screen
-Improved battery life (lasts up to 4x longer)
-Faster UMD drive that will shorten load times
-8 GB internal flash memory
-Improved buttons and D-pad
-Possible internal camera
-Target price point of $170
-Officially unveiled at E3
-On sale in August or September 2007

This seems like a fanboy's wish list of improvements rather than an actual spec list.  I'm not so certain it will happen, especially at $170.

Update #1:  June 12, 2007

New Information/Rumors

-"[T]he updated PSP won't have big speed increases and will be outfitted with a slot UMD loader"
-"[The screen is] the same size [as the current one] and is "Sidekick-esque." That would give the portable a "flip-factor" and decrease the system's overall size"
-New controls for UMD movie chapter and music skipping
-Screen is still LCD, not LED as previous information indicated
-Sony is considering adding Bluetooth capabilities
-4 GB of on-board memory, not 8 GB
-"[T]his new PSP would eventually replace all existing models. Pricing is "currently the same," and the release date is Fall 07"

Looks like BnM might have been on the right track when he guessed a clam-shell design.  I also find it interesting that the PSP Slim will replace the existing model and not work in conjunction with it.  My guess would have been that Sony drops the price of the existing model and positions the PSP Slim as a high-end version.

Updated #2:  June 13, 2007

PlayStation Blog "Denies" PSP Update

The rumor mill is flowing about new PSP hardware and a PSP phone, and I just wanted to take the time to clear the air. We haven't announced anything about a new PSP, much less one that would have any phone capabilities. As SCEA's resident PSP guru, I'm thrilled to hear that there's so much interest in the platform, but sorry folks, these reports floating around fall into the rumors/speculation category.

Anyone else love string cheese as much as I do?

Frigo Cheese Heads is holding a Nintendo-themed contest.  Each string cheese wrapper contains a letter.  If you're bad ass enough to spell N-I-N-T-E-N-D-O-D-S-L-I-T-E you can win a DS Lite and four Mario-themed games (NSMB, Mario Kart DS, Mario vs. DK 2, and Mario Hoops).

The contest is going on for like the next four months, so you guys better start eating more cheese.

Anyone else catch Michael Mann's horrific tribute to American Cinema (or whatever that cheesy montage was meant to be) towards the end of the Academy Awards?

From the trite cut of Superman in space to the tired (not to mention predictable) clips of Scarface and Reservoir Dogs.

The worst part was the cut of several war movies displayed over an out of place Hero by Foo Fighters.

Michael Mann is the worst (or at least the most over-rated) director ever.

Svevan can suck it.

Needs more Dog Day Afternoon.

Nintendo Gaming / Assistance needed with D-Link DI-624 Router
« on: February 12, 2007, 03:03:43 PM »
I need help configuring my DI-624 router.

When I try to connect my Wii to the Shop Channel it frequently times out.  When it does connect it can sometimes take several minutes.  Oftentimes, the connection will cut out after it makes the initial connection.

I've heard that switching the router's channel to 11 can greatly improve performance (not sure why).  I tried going into the setup page (http://192.168.0.1/) only to find that for some reason the only wireless channel available to select is 6.  I'm not sure if I'm looking in the wrong place or if my router just sucks.

Any help?

Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, Castlevania: SotN to PSP
Quote

Titled Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, the package features a "2.5D" remake of Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, which was originally released for the PC Engine Super CD-ROM (aka the Turbo CD) in Japan, as well as the original version, for those who want to relive it exactly how they remember it.

As if that wasn't sweet enough, Chronicles will also include a full port of the PS1 classic Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, complete will full screen graphics and an improved localization, says 1up.
This is huge; at least for hardcore Castlevania nuts.

Nintendo Gaming / My DS is acting screwy
« on: December 29, 2006, 12:16:13 PM »
My DS is acting screwy.

Here's the issue:  When I turn on my DS it no longer shows the Health and Safety warning on the bottom screen; it lights up but there's no text.  It shows the Nintendo DS logo on the top screen just fine but the bottom screen is blank.  After the logo is done with its animation it loads right into the game (I have my DS set to automatically load the game and skip the main menu)--I no longer have to touch the screen/button in order to load the game.  Other than this, the system works perfectly fine.

Here's the back story, which may or may not be the cause of the issue (most likely it is):  Three days ago my DS refused to charge.  I tried multiple outlets and made sure the connection was good, but it still wouldn't charge.  I used a battery tester to ensure both the outlet and the charger were functioning, which they were.  I then removed the battery and tested it--the battery was also fine.  I cleaned all the connections and replaced the battery.  Still nothing.  I gave up and went to go do something else.  I came back in a bit and repeated all the same procedures--this time, after replacing the battery, it charged just fine.  However, once I turned on the system the Health and Safety screen stopped appearing when I booted the system.

Weird, huh?  Anyone heard of this before?  The other odd thing is that this happened almost two years to the day (well, two years and one day, to be exact) after I got my DS.

Here's a neat little website that shows pictures of famous movie scenes acted out with common office products (staplers, highlighters, etc).  Your job is to guess what movie the scene is from.  There are 20 in all--how many can you get right?

If you live in the UK you can enter a contest to win 50 DVDS if you get all the answers right; for everyone else it's just for fun.

I was able to correctly name 17 of them before I gave up and did a Google search to find out the missing answers.

Here are the answers for the lazy.

1. Alien...............................................................
2. Bridget Jones's Diary..................................
3. Edward Scissorhands...............................
4. E.T..................................................................
5. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
6. Jaws.............................................................
7. The Wizard of Oz.........................................
8. Piranha......................................................... (I had to cheat on this one; I've never heard of the movie.)
9. Reservoir Dogs...........................................
10. Saturday Night Fever................................
11. The Birds....................................................
12. Hunt for Red October................................
13. The Shining................................................
14. The Terminator.......................................... (I had to cheat on this one, too; I still think this is the worst one.)
15. The Usual Suspects.................................
16. This is Spinal Tap.....................................
17. Titanic......................................................... (I also had to cheat on this one, although in retrospect I should have figured it out.)
18. American Beauty......................................
19. Moonraker..................................................
20. Star Wars...................................................
