Nintendo Gaming / Iwata and Yamamuchi Interview
« on: February 13, 2004, 06:22:36 AM »
Iwata and Yamamuchi Interview

some intereting bits of information from the current the former presidents of nintendo.  highlights from the interview include:
Quote

I don't think our problems can be solved by just increasing the power of the consoles.  It's not clear what other companies are trying to achieve with their new consoles, we will not make something incomplete just for the sake of it.  Nintendo's hardware development team is thinking about when we should release the next machine
Quote

I wonder how much money companies like Sony and Microsoft are making from [online gaming]?  You can't say that appropriate business models are in place yet - customers are also not jumping on board.  But Nintendo doesn't hold a negative view of "net technologies"
Quote

I think the game industry is maturing in different ways to those I imagined.  The industry is displaying certains aspects of being in a crisis.  Gamers don't just want beautiful graphics, sounds and epic stories.  We cannot guarantee interesting and fun games just by using better technology and increasing the functions of the machines
Quote

The management are expecting good things from the DS.  If we can increase the scope of the industry, we can re-energise the global market and lift Japan out of depression - that is Nintendo's mission.  If the DS succeeds, we will rise to heaven, but if it fails we will sink to hell.  The next two years will decide Nintendo's fate

Nintendo Gaming / blowout

BlowOut for Cube (warning:  links to ign.com)
has anyone played this game for cube or ps2/xbox?  impressions?

i've heard a couple of things about it but i haven't seen any reviews or even heard if it's decent or if it sucks.  for $10 it might be worth checking out, but if it's horrid, i'd rather save my money.

General Chat / ign and gamespy merge

IGN and GameSpy Announce Merger Agreement

two not-so-hot gaming websites merge to form one super not-so-hot gaming website.

while i typically enjoy gamespy's reviews, its editorials and features are rather poor, and ign leaves a bad taste in my mouth in general.  if ign wasn't one of the best places to find breaking news, (if there is such a thing in the videogame world) i would probably avoid the site all together.

now i can probably count on gamespy's reviews going down the toilets.  anyone know any sites that have good reviews in a timely fashion besides gamespot?

General Gaming / N-Gage security compromised

N-Gage security compromised
Quote

The security settings on Nokia Corp.’s N-Gage mobile-phone/video-game device may have been breached, allowing hackers to play N-Gage games on other devices using the same operating system and possibly selling the games over the Internet.

good news for the six people in the world who want to play n-gage games without buying the system/games.

on a side note, i feel like mario.  (the pgc forum user, not the beloved nintendo mascot.)
being the first to post obscure news from a website no one has ever heard of feels kinda good.

General Chat / burninated by ati radeon 9600 xt preorder
« on: October 29, 2003, 06:41:09 AM »
like (apparently) a lot of people out there, i preordered a ati radeon 9600 xt shortly after gamespy.com ran an article on them.  the news of a good card at a very reasonable price ($200) came at a great time for me since i was halfway through building a new computer.  after preordering the card, i checked ati.com every few days for news of a release date.  last week i noticed that they changed the status of the 9600 xt from 'preorder' to 'sold out'.  excellent, i thought--apparently the card's very popular, and i got mine in plenty of time.  (no doubt the free copy of half-life 2 increased preorders by quite a bit.)

last week, anxious about the card, i e-mailed someone in ati's customer service for a status update.  i was told that the card is on back order and they had no idea when more would be ready.

so what does this mean?  most likely either (a) the card was sold out when i preordered it over 4 weeks ago and ati didn't change its website to reflect the status until last week, or (b) the card wasn't sold out until last week, and ati hates me and decided to ship my card to someone else.

did anyone on this forum preorder the 9600 xt?  anyone get theirs?  if so, when did you preorder?  if it was after october 1, i think it's only fair that you send me your card and i'll send you mine when i get it.  okay?  no?  didn't think so.

so now i have a new p4 2.8ghz pc sitting on my living room floor with no video card in it.

i am officially burninated.  (thanks knowsnothing, for the great word.)

General Chat / strongbad
« on: August 15, 2003, 11:35:32 AM »
since we have so many teen girl squad fans on this board, maybe i can get an answer to my question....

anyone know why there hasn't been a new strongbad for a month?  i'm sad.

oh, and once i get an answer to this question, just start rattling off your favorite episodes, so the thread doesn't die (kinda like with the penny arcade thread).

General Gaming / psp specs revealed
« on: July 29, 2003, 05:10:10 AM »
ign.com has an article that shows the sony psp specs.  psp specs revealed

unfortunately, i'm not that technically inclined, so the information in the article means very little to me.  anyone care to explain?

General Gaming / xbox live price structure
« on: July 24, 2003, 10:23:56 AM »
does anybody know what the pricing is going to be for an xbox live subscription once the free year ends?
i saw on gamerfeed.com that the price structure for xbox live in japan is only going to be $30/year or $5.70/month, much lower than i anticipated.  i'm thinking they're lowering prices in japan to hopefully stir up some interest.  i haven't heard any pricing for xbox live in the u.s.a. though.  did i miss it, or has it not been announced yet?

NWR Feedback / suggestion for a new forum
« on: July 18, 2003, 05:25:08 AM »
why doesn't pgc add a special forum where users can talk about stuff that would normally not be tolerated?  (i.e. polls, games/systems for sale, flame other systems if they so choose, etc)  this way if people actually care about that stuff they can read the forum and if they don't care, they just don't go there.  also, i think it would also help to clear the regular forums of some of the garbage that people stick in there.  meaning, if people had a place where they could sell they used copy of spy hunter, we wouldn't see it in gamecube discussion.  just a suggestion.

Nintendo Gaming / lost vikings
« on: July 17, 2003, 07:17:45 AM »
how do i beat the first level of the factory?  i can get to the end of the level, but i don't have the key.  i'm assuming i must be missing a hidden passage, but i searched high and low and i can't find it.  i checked gamefaqs.com and there's only one guide on it and it's worthless.  any help?

Nintendo Gaming / hitman 2: silent assassin
« on: July 11, 2003, 09:13:32 AM »
has anyone played this game for ngc?  i've read reviews about it online, and most sites rank it in the mid-80's, but they all mention drops in framerate as being a big problem.  does the framerate issue really detract from the enjoyment of the game, or are the sites being too critical (as they usually are in cases like these)?

Nintendo Gaming / what is/was megathon?
« on: June 03, 2003, 12:41:49 PM »
i vaguely remember hearing something about a nintendo project called megaton around 6 months ago.  i'm pretty sure it was determined to be a rumor/hoax, but i never really found out what it was supposed to be.  can someone fill me in?  thanks.

Nintendo Gaming / mega man on gamecube
« on: May 13, 2003, 09:33:55 AM »
is anyone else totally unimpressed by the screen shots of the new mega man on gamecube?  the backgrounds looks rather sweet, but the characters (mega man, especially) look pretty poor.  and i was hoping for big things out of this game....

Nintendo Gaming / advance wars: what's with the war room?
« on: May 07, 2003, 06:01:33 PM »
i picked up advance wars a couple months ago after i got my sp, and just finished the main campaign last week.  up to this point i had pretty much ignored the war room.

can someone give me some insight as to what exactly the war room is?

from what i can tell, it looks to be a bunch of different maps against various COs that didn't fit into the main game.  i know you can purchase more maps and COs from the store, but is there anything else i need to know about the war room?

is it possible to replay missions from the main campaign here?  is it possible to play the alternate stages from the main campaign (i.e. can i play andy's route instead of max's?) or do i have to play all the way through the main campaign again?

Nintendo Gaming / playing splinter cell on gba before gc
« on: April 28, 2003, 03:55:47 PM »
has anyone played both splinter cell on gamecube (or xbox or ps2) and the gba version?  i know they're two completely different games but since they have different versions of the same moves, levels, etc and the same story line is it going to ruin my experience playing the gamecube version if i play the gba version first?

i plan on getting both versions, but right now i'm so tied up in zelda i don't have a chance to play it on gamecube and i'm in need of a good gba game.  would anyone advise to hold off on the gba version until after i've played the gamecube version?

as the title states, i must have not been paying attention and i don't know why i'm collecting pearls.  thus far i have the one from the eagle people (i think it's din's pearl) and the one from the deku tree (no idea what this one's called) but i have no idea why i'm sailing around collecting these.  because of my job i only get to play the game for a couple hours a night ever other night so i probably went and forgot the plot.  can someone fill me in on the purpose of these pearls?  thanks.

Nintendo Gaming / majora's mask
« on: April 01, 2003, 08:37:40 AM »
why does every one seem to have a problem with majora's mask?  i've heard a million complaints that the game was too easy, that it was too short, that people beat it in one day, etc.

i was a really big fan of the game, personally.  true, it didn't have the story line that ocarina of time had, but in terms of game play it was right up there.  i really enjoyed the new time limit issues that were presented by the three-day cycle.  and true, while there were only four main dungeons to complete, there were even more side quests than in ocarina.

i know i'm not the only one out there who enjoyed this game, i'm just wondering what other people's views on this game are.  after beating master quest a few weeks ago, i'm really tempted to break out my n64 and replay majora's mask after i get through wind waker once (maybe twice, depending on how much the game leaves me wanting more).

Nintendo Gaming / battery backup
« on: March 18, 2003, 05:26:43 PM »
anyone have any idea how long the battery lasts in gba (or gb, gbc, n64, snes and nes for that matter) games that have battery backup?  am i going to have to worry about losing my save files in 20 years?  is there a way to change the battery in catridges so you can save games if/when the battery dies?

Nintendo Gaming / sanity problem in eternal darkness
« on: February 27, 2003, 04:42:44 PM »
arg.  i was playing eternal darkness and after beating karim's story it appears my game froze and i got a message saying ...

An error has occurred.  Turn the power OFF and check the Nintendo GameCube Instruction Booklet for further instructions.

i can't seem to get it unstuck and i think i have to restart my gamecube.  is this just some weird sanity thing or is there really a problem?

*edit*

i just opened up the disc slot on my gamecube and the disc had stopped spinning.  so it appears it was some sort of error, not a sanity affect.  has anyone else experience this problem with e.d. or any other gc game?

174
i remember reading somewhere a long time ago that it's wise to always turn off your gc from the title screen of whatever game you're playing.  i can't remember why, but i think it had something to do with the memory card.  up until recently, i had always done this, but i just got eternal darkness and i can't seem to find a way to get to the title screen once you're playing the game.  same with the zelda bonus disc.

does anyone know if it's a good idea to turn off your system from the title screen or if this is a bunch of hogwash?  thanks.

General Gaming / sony delaying the ps3?
« on: February 17, 2003, 10:13:39 AM »
i get the distinct feeling that sony is holding off on the ps3 for longer than they should be/could be.

right now, ps2 is a) the weakest of the next gen consoles in terms of hardware, b) the strongest of the next gen consoles in terms of sales.  obviously, the sales are strong with this console, in part, because of the lead time the ps2 had over the gc and the xbox.

if ps3 were to debut next x-mas ps2 support would come to a stand-still, thus forcing ps2 owners to upgrade to the new ps3 or buy a new system.  from what i've read consoles have come to a plateau in terms of how powerful they can get at this point in time.  (of course there's always some room for improvement, but not nearly as much as the leap from the snes to the n64, for example)

at any rate, does any one else think that sony might be delaying the release of the ps2 because they don't want to force their consumers to upgrade to a newer system, thus giving up their lead time?  i know that one could argue that if sony could get the ps3 out there before the gc2 or the xbox2, they would again have a substantial lead over their competitors, but as i already said, consoles have come as far as they can (for now).  the ps3 would most likely be up to par with the gc or the xbox, not light-years beyond them.

all i can say is, if i were a ps2 owner, upgrading to a newer system, i would want to go with a system that had been out for a few years and already had a substantial number of games rather than a new system with far fewer (and generally speaking, launch games tend to be rather weak) games.  (all this is assuming that the ps3 isn't substantially better than the gc or xbox in terms of hardware/price)

anyone else have any ideas?
