TalkBack / Re: Why Storytelling Matters in Videogame Plots
« on: September 19, 2010, 12:40:33 PM »
I completely disagree on the Subspace story having good and bad parts. It had funny parts, but the thing was a contrived mess from beginning to end. Nothing is really explained unless you get trophies in said mode, and the fact Sakurai had to make an update on the Brawl website to explain why the story is happening is just idiotic.

Now, a bad storyline within a game that ruins established canon for the sake of pandering to stupid fans is basically MGS4. The entire game from start to finish.

Fair enough. Just as long as they keeping developing 2D goodness, it's all good.
It's pretty much what they did when they were still Konami developers. Not that it's a bad thing or anything.

Again, there's that soft division between play and mastery that parallels Yoshi's Story: relatively easy to beat, but do you really have the patience and acumen to get all heart fruits, find the hidden Yoshis, and go in circles looking for 30 melons?

Yoshi's Story is pretty infamous.  Bring up the topic of lousy Nintendo games and it is almost immediately brought up.  So it doesn't seem like a good design for Nintendo to emulate.

The Yoshi's Story design ends up with a game that is too easy to beat so it ends up appealing mostly to children... except almost all of Nintendo's games appeal to children ANYWAY so lowering the difficulty is unnecessary.  I think that was the ultimate frustration with Yoshi's Story.  Nintendo appeared to have dumbed down the Yoshi's Island gameplay for the purposes of targetting an audience that Yoshi's Island already appealed to.
/Um, yeah. Story wasn't absolute ****. Good? Not really. Easy? Um, depends on what level you take and if you try to get all those extra trinkets, then yeah. But let's go with a list of what made Island better then Story.

- Story had alternate paths and secrets that branched out the level very well. Island had the same idea, just not as robust. Problem? Story's stage progression was stupid, level could end easily by collecting any fruit x30. Island didn't have that, played like a traditional platform game.

- Graphics? Eh... Story looks better personally, but I won't fault Island since I consider it one of the most awesome looking SNES games. Story didn't have crying babies for that matter either.

- Music... uh, nothing against Kozumi Totaka, but holy **** the music sounds like something from a child's read-along story book.

- Final boss battle? Story screwed it up, massively. JUST GRAB A SUPER HEART FRUIT AND BEAT THE **** OUTTA BABY BOWSER FOLKS. Island? OH MY GOD BOWSER GREW HUGE HOLY **** AWESOME!

So yeah.

This does remind me that I have an unplayed copy of Wario Land Shake It that I need to get around to playing.   'Tis my shame.

Yes you do.  The game is great.  Especially if you have a nice TV and component cables.  So pretty.
I second this. Just don't like the fact the game is still 4x3 with borders.

Oh god yes, please give me those achievements please. That was the icing on the cake with Shake It!, and it offered lot of challenge (and though I haven't played it in a while, Shake It was pretty challenge from what I remember).

« on: August 13, 2010, 12:53:52 PM »
The Xbox 360 redesign is a much bigger deal than I thought.  I know two people (Jonny being one of them) that have already bought the slim version to replace their old 360, and another person that never owned a 360 (mainly a PC gamer) but finally picked up the slim.
Mostly because this time Microsoft designed it inside out instead of the other way around.

If this trend continues then the Wii is going to have another killer holiday season, which pretty much guarantees that the Wii HD isn't coming out until late 2012 at the earliest.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one thinking that 2011 is going to make a killing for Nintendo.

I voted for Double Dash since, despite what people may say, has that really good partner system I liked. Some of the special items are useful, others... not so much (Mario/Luigi fireballs).

No matter how many times you claim Metroid Prime is in any way a response to Halo, it doesn't make it any more true. Forget for a second the fact that they don't play anything like each other; Prime came out way too soon after Halo for it to have had any impact on its development.

IIRC I'm pretty sure there was some media/gamer driven efforts to put Halo 2 and Prime 2 in a competitive frame prior to their respective releases. Prime 2's multiplayer mode was in part responsible together with the media obsession to find a Halo-killer.
And this is an absolute fact, but it didn't really work out for Retro at all. MP2 is still great, the multiplayer is still a brown smear though.

Then Retro went 'oh **** it' and that's why MP3 is so awesome.

Problem is that they are backing it with stronger hardware. Plus the 360 is really the 'market leader' from a gamer standpoint. It stands a better chance of getting unique quality 3rd party support than Wii did.
And this was what Nintendo themselves expected even before the Wii released.

They lacked the Nintendo Touch that made both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark masterpieces.
And from what I heard, PD Live Arcade is even better with a smoothed out frame-rate (though god help me if they made it's aiming second analog. Those games had awesome aiming systems for a console FPS).

I can't imagine that their shareholders are too happy to hear this. Capcom sort of dropped the ball last year, didn't they?
Mostly due to the iffy quality of their games. Keyword 'iffy'.

I still don't believe the Star Fox 64 3DS is going to become reality, not after Hideki Kamiya said he wanted to work with Nintendo on a new Star Fox game. That could become something else entirely.

Just hopefully it isn't touched by Q-Games.

I pray the analog slider is good for joystick combos. (d-pads just don't work for me. need an arcade pad to play these games)

OH HAY LOOK NO VC

This is 4 weeks and counting. I'm seriously thinking they're going to let the Sunsoft games come out and then euthanize it. Unless Q4 is absolutely insane...
Impossible, the NoA VC staffers are run by animals, and not the smart kind.

Completely agree with the first place entry. There is no other substitute for 2-D perfection except SMB3/NSMBWii/DKC2.

So what the next series poll going to be again? Castlevania? Mario? Mario Kart/Spin-Offs?

DS 41,798,158
So has the DS passed up the PS2 in lifetime sales in the US now?
Wikipedia says 50 million for North America as of December 2008.
Though how much of this is padding due to defective consoles in PS2's case? And to be fair, DS?

I would consider Super Paper Mario to be a Platformer sprinkled with RPG elements ala Metroidvania.

I also don't think I'd consider Monster Hunter to be an RPG; at least,   it isn't a traditional one, like Final Fantasy.
Mostly Zelda adventuring with a sprinkling of RPG defense stats.
