Nintendo Gaming / RE: Market the Revolution: What's the slogan?
« on: December 15, 2005, 07:09:28 PM »
as long as nintendo can generate buzz on the Good Morning America, CNN HEadline News, Regis, maybe the oprah giveaway to wow some of the older folks, then highlight the good stuff during Adult Swim, Fox Sunday Lineup, Comedy Central, MTV.

edit- oh if we're going to talk about classic commercials you gotta note the fun-colored N64 commercials. You know, with the armies.

yes but the ps2 is omnipresent this generation. if you are going to publish a game then you are a fool to not consider the ps2.

well said. the only thing that would bother me about these specs is the possibility that we wont get a true next-gen Pikmin. you know, Online Co-op where each player can have nearly 500 pikmin in battle.   (actually if you marched 500 pikmin through the typical level you'll lose about 50 on every bridge, narrow pathway, etc.)

anyways, if this launches at $200 without the shell controller and a game I might be pissed. I want $150. $200 w/ Smash Bros.
but this worries me --- they need to keep load times down. We play SSB:M all day (my dorm room is a vortex) and I love how there's never more than a 2-3 second load time before battles. I hope Ninty can keep access times down.

Also they need to know that they are walking the fine line between gaming console and one of those shifty TV games like baseball or golf, or even that thing that you draw on and then it shows up on the TV.

I dont understand why people are buying the PSP.... it seems like the hype really died down and I'm hoping that people will just give up on it. I always ask my gamespot employees how the PSP and DS are sellling, and they always tell me the same thing: they are pushing way more PSPs than DSes... i still don't know if that's just some sales pitch to try to get me to buy the cooler system or if they really know it. still,,, my friend who owns both spends waaayy more time with Advance Wars than Spiderman 2 UMD (or anything else he has for the PSP)

Punch-out with two remotes. block by bringing the remotes together, dodge by moving both remotes left/right/down. You guys have all thought of this already, but I'm wondering how they could make this game without two freehand controllers. I suppose that the triggers on the analog attachment could be hook/jab for the left hand, and the right hand could be controlled however you like.

$30 dollar question: is the attachment going to come in right/left hand attachments, or do you think that the attachment is going to be universal. right now it looks like it's intended for lefthand use.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: another interesting 1up article: Developer roundtable

concerning the intimidation factor:

Gamers don't look at the Xbox 360 controller and piss their pants. They think it looks pretty good, feels comfortable, etc. But if you ask your dad and mom to join you in a game of Perfect Dark Zero, you'll have a damned hard time convincing them to stick around, simply because there are so many moves that telling them what each one does is sensory overload.

I don't see how non-gamers will be frightened by the Rev controller, or even in the least bit put off. Once you explain the motion control, they'll want to try. They will only have to learn the location of two buttons, so there wont be a learning curve where they're looking down at the remote every time they're required to press a button.

I used to think Nintendo's strategy was folly, but after trying to teach my girlfriend how to play smash bros, I see how a simplified setup will open up the market. I can imagine Good Morning America or Regis and that dumb btch bringing a Rev on to show the wonders of technology.

As for complex games, yeah I think the hardcore fans are kinda screwed. We'll either plug the controller into the shell any time we want to take sam fisher on an adventure or developers will have to think of reduce multiple moves to a single context-sensitive button. I don't really like the thought of that.

i played quake 4 on an HDTV and really thought it looked pretty damn good.

then I played it on a regular set and was surprised at the difference in the game on the different settings; I'm not impressed with the XBOX360 on regular TV sets...

I did the same with Perfect Dark Xero (hehe) and again noticed the differences in the textures and jaggy edges.  I need to spen more time with 360 (and so do developers) but right now I give it a meh out of 5

General Gaming / RE: The bananarang will be the controller
« on: November 21, 2005, 12:01:19 PM »
I wholeheartedly agree with Paladin; I feel like High Def. just makes games look more like games. yes you can see higher res. textures but I can still tell I'm playing a videogame and I fear what some crappy rushed 3rd party titles are going to look like when they don't spend the extra effort on textures..
Plus, I dont know many people who want to drop $500 to get a basic gaming setup (over $600 after final controller purchases and a few games... jeez!) If nintendo should get the Rev. out in a decent timeframe and launch at $200-250, Nintendo can't be stopped unless ignorance prevails (again).
However, this is just the launch period; perhaps the 360 will really hit it's stride mid-next year. Until then I think if anyone wants a new video game system they should buy a nintendo DS.

i dunno about you guys, but I played the 360 and I think the controller isn't as good as the Xbox controller S.
This might be a comfortable controller, but I think the Rev will win in comfort this round.. I want measurements of the Rev controller though.. I think it's just about the heght of my cell phone (archaic Nokia-POS around 15 cm/6 in)

all I know is that I walked away from the xbox360 kiosk at BestBuy very unimpressed (i didnt play PGR3).  I dont see how it the system can benefit me; I dont have an HDTV, and even if I did have one I think high resolution just makes crappy textures more distinct.. my brother (relatively unbiased) claimed that Call of Duty looked more unrealistic because the picture was so clear... all in all I think Microsoft is launching too early and I'll be really aggrivated when they actually are praised whereas Nintendo was chastised for launching an underpowered DS just to beat the PSP to market

(i know that the DS wasn't underpowered just because nintendo wanted to launch it early, but seriously if  they didnt have to worry about the PSP then I'm pretty sure that the DS would have been slight different and had a proper launch)

General Gaming / RE: Nice impressions of PDZ
« on: November 20, 2005, 08:01:24 AM »
yes but unless Ninty releases it on the Virtual Console then we will never have perfect dark on the penultimate controller. (imagine using Turok style controls (1.2) but with a GCN analogue stick.. beautiful. or better, PD with freehand support (i think that will never happen, the most I can hope for is PDDS at 60 frames/sec.

this may be over-doing it, but i think there should be some distinction between the pokeballs.. perhaps they should have the strong ball (or whatever it's called, just make it blue and yellow) and then everyone would know its going to be a real badass-mon

EDIT: that sounded a lot better earlier.. but I liike the random proabability associated with the pokeballs, the surprise when a Suicune or Electriccat is priceless

I've been reading the xbox360 countdown on IGN, and I have to say that I'm still not too impressed (at all). The wireless controller + charger totals to $70! If I wanted a full Xbox360 setup, I'd need at least two sets of those and then one more wireless -- nearing 600 USD. Additionally, there are only three usb ports on the console, meaning that if you were going to stick with wired controllers you'd still have to go wireless for your fourth controller. I know i'm nitpicking, but I also know that if nintendo made some of these mistakes, we'd all hear about it -- either from Iach other or from G4TV. I wanted an xbox360, but microsoft is making all the wrong moves, it seems. Plus, I still dont get too worked up on this High Def. crap. I'd go HDTV to see the hairs on a rhino's ass, not to see a really shoddy texture in great detail. None of the games look realistic... cept the car racing games. those look nice.

but i need to play it, and on a real hdtv.
