Podcast Discussion / Re: Radio Free Nintendo: Episode 171
« on: November 23, 2009, 01:45:47 AM »
Thank God RetroActive is over. When you guys talk about RPG's like this it's just not fun to listen too.  A little too much inside baseball and unless you have played the game before you have barely have a clue what's going on. Adventure games, action games even FPS games are easier to talk about and why you don't like or like it.

outside of that boring last piece everything is great. Spam of the week was excellent, mario discussion was awesome.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo and Intelligent Systems Team for WiiWare Gun Game
« on: November 21, 2009, 10:28:01 AM »
The point is that while it's technically possible to play any game with the Zapper it's impractical with most. I could play The Conduit with my gun shell but since it needs all those buttons on the top of the remote frequently I would severely cripple myself. On the other hand I can play Wild West Guns or Water Warfare without ever reaching for the top of the remote so I can use the gun shell without negative impact.

try brawl with a gun. That could work

i'm not a fan of the fx 2d style of mario kart. I just think the level design is boring i miss the hills and valleys of the '3d' mario kart games like 64 and so forth.

they should release all those games this week.

Just imagine the internet exploding in glee:

Super Mario Kart
Super Smash Brothers
Pilotwings
&
Castlevania Rebirth
Cave Story

I would love to see how the internet explodes after this update. Nintendo can do this.

How much of the music is recycled from the DS game, and how much of it is a new composition? It's been a while since I played the DS one so I don't remember all of the music.

I'm not to happy about that. That music isn't that memorable , I much rather they just recycle the music from Brawl. Brawl had some amazing remixes of mario themes.

Underworld remix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJ8CK3-SbCQ

under water remix ( it takes time to get going)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGSnsWGC9k0

and finally

remix of ground theme 2:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSnpSi218Sk

Nintendo already has this music and it belongs to them. I much rather play mario game with this music than the midi music that is currently in NSMBW

So far the only boss battle I thought was interesting was Wendy Koopa. Everyone else was pretty much a clone of mario 3 version and not that difficult or unique.

"Can Can Aliens"?  I think "Canivorous Aliens" would have been catchier. Oh well. The plot certainely has potential.

I want to shoot women who kick in the air and just don't care.

-Well-worn graphical style

i wish Nintendo made the game look like this:

or

http://fc09.deviantart.com/fs32/f/2008/233/a/e/Milky_Sky_by_Orioto.jpg

but Nintendo is lazy with art style in mario games. I guess they don't want to try to top Yoshi Island.

The one arguable exception are the fortresses and castle designs, but the varied and clever Koopaling boss battles help address this—even if they are somewhat easy.

I'm really enjoying the castle levels.

Really good review I pretty much agree with everything. I'm not a fan of shaking the wiimote to pick up items or people.

If that game and watch contained ALL the game and watch games and was backlighted than it would be cool.

G&W games get boring after 2 minutes. It will collect dust. It's only cool because Japan got it. If we got it, we would complain.

My mario hat is something I actually worn and used in real life.

TalkBack / Re: Phoenix Wright WiiWare Confirmed
« on: November 18, 2009, 07:16:29 AM »
Ok, on the upside these certainly are good games (if "games" is the right word) and it's good that the Wii audience is going to get another crack at these.

On the downside, c'mon Capcom I know you're fond of ridiculous franchise milking but was it really necessary to re-release these barely-altered-for-DS GBA games on WiiWare?  And why WiiWare when DSiWare would be a rather appropriate choice for porting a handheld game?  On that subject, are they going to even attempt to redraw these games for the higher-resolution Wii or are these going to be direct ports of the low-res DS art?  Why not create a new Phoenix Wright game for WiiWare?  The old adventures are GBA games and there's pretty much nothing the Wii can add to them in terms of functionality that the DS versions didn't already marginally add.

In the end, more Phoenix Wright is always good and Capcom isn't gouging fans as much as you'd think they would, but it's still an underwhelming announcement.

I second this.

The next wii needs to morph the sensor bar into also a camera.

3d head tracking tech needs to be part of that.

Add some of the stuff Project Natal is doing and you have next generation Wii with better graphics, better more advanced 3d, motion controls that are refined to the next level of wii motion plus. Put more memory into the wiimote2.0 and have the game learn how YOU play the game and HOW YOU do the motions and use that to build upon the AI and make the game work better FOR YOU.

This is how the next gen Wii will be.

i tried the nunchuk controls for a level and went back to the normal controls after.

analog stick to move, a to jump, b to run. It works but I'm just to used to oldschool nes style.

I'm not a fan of shaking plus 1 button to pick up items. I like moving platforms with angle of wiimote and spin jump/propeller suit seem to work fine but picking up items seems not as fast as button press would be and doesn't seem to always work.

i played with my girlfriend and we had tons of fun. She is a super casual gamer and gave up at the first castle area, but she was laughing and having fun.

« on: November 11, 2009, 12:31:29 PM »
i really do think iphone is a threat to DS and PSP.

iPhone games are no more than $10 while all PSP and DS games are $30 or up. For casual gamers they don't care about quality games. I'm guessing majority of iphone gamers are casual gamers and that will take away from DS casual brain age people. It can potentially a race to the bottom as people don't want to buy a $30 ds game vs. a $1 iphone game. I worry the iPhone is going to bring about the 2nd major videogame crash.

Electroplankton Trapy
Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 200 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: Trapy plankton make sounds as they swim over graceful lines made up of linked triangles. The creatures follow the lines you trace along the water. There are six types of Trapy in all, each with a unique color and sound. All Trapy plankton produce different tones depending on the direction they swim. They produce the lowest-pitched sounds when they swim to the right and produce higher-pitched sounds as their path veers to the left.

Electroplankton Hanenbow
Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 200 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: Normally aquatic creatures, Hanenbow sometimes use floating leaves to launch themselves out of the water, creating strange sounds and melodies as they bounce off the leaves. Entire schools of Hanenbow have been known to launch out of the water, one after another. As a leaf is repeatedly hit by flying Hanenbow, it gradually changes color. This also alters the sound made by bouncing Hanenbow. When all the leaves turn red, a flower will bloom. It remains unclear why the Hanenbow display this curious behavior.

Electroplankton Rec-Rec
Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 200 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: Rec-Rec are fishlike plankton that feed on sound waves. They absorb sound waves transmitted through water and use them as a form of nutrition. The sound waves that the Rec-Rec eat are then stored inside their bodies until they have been digested. Once the digestion process is complete, they play back the sounds in perfect four-second intervals. While these sounds are playfully emitted, wave patterns can be seen pulsating on their bodies. Rec-Rec always swim side by side in schools of four. When they swim at different speeds, the frequency with which they emit sounds also changes.

Electroplankton Nanocarp
Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 200 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: Nanocarp have very sensitive hearing. Using their two ears to sense vibrations coming through the water, these plankton can distinguish sound quality and frequency. They display very interesting reactions to the sound of humans clapping or breathing. Nanocarp are also excellent swimmers. They have a tendency to swim in formations of 16 and react together when they detect sounds. These plankton emit sounds on their own when they sense waves on the water's surface. When this happens, the pitch of sounds they produce changes depending on where the Nanocarp is located.

Electroplankton Beatnes
Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 200 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: Beatnes are curious plankton with geometrically shaped heads that form vertical strands like seaweed. Their bodies are made up of eight sections, each featuring a distinctive diamond-shaped tail. The sound of a Beatnes can vary wildly depending on which segment of the body is tapped. However, all of the sounds closely resemble the short-wave and triangular-wave sound effects from a Nintendo Entertainment System sound chip. When Beatnes are tapped in time with a rhythm, they continue to repeat the sounds in perfect time for a short period.
