Nintendo Gaming / Super Smash Bros Survivor
« on: October 22, 2008, 06:01:56 PM »
I'm probably late to the party on this one, but did anyone notice Ken from this season's Surivor is the current World Champion at Smash Bros Melee?  I'm not a big fan of the show but my wife makes me watch it and I noticed it listed "Professional Gamer" as his occupation.  I was curious what game he excels at, and low and behold its Smash Bros.

Here's an excerpt:

Ken Hoang gives a new meaning to the term "gamer." Known to the gaming community as "the King of Smash," Hoang is a professional at his craft. As the current international champion of Nintendo's Super Smash Brothers Melee video game, Ken has traveled the world from Japan to Australia to prove his dominance.

Hoang uses his tournament winnings to help support his family. He and his siblings still live at home to help pay the mortgage. It has also led to a strong bond among his brothers and sisters. In fact it was his sister that started his addiction to SURVIVO
R.

Maybe someday I'll achieve such glory through my mastery of "Kart".

Nintendo Gaming / Reggie Defends The Line Up
« on: October 07, 2008, 12:09:39 PM »
For those interested in what Reggie's current thoughts are, here's a pretty lengthy interview from VentureBeat --> http://venturebeat.com/2008/10/06/qa-with-nintendo-of-america-chief-reggie-fils-aime-on-game-industry-competition/

There's one question in particular I found a bit curious:

VB: Do you think your upcoming hardcore games will answer complaints people had a few months ago at E3 about Nintendo ignoring hardcore gamers?

RF-A: The gaming enthusiast that buys a tremendous amount of games is truly insatiable. As an example, in March, we launched “Super Smash Bros. Brawl.” In April, we launched “Mario Kart.” In later April, we launched “Wii Fit.” Then, in July, at E3, they say, “where are the games?” They say they want the next Mario game. “Super Mario Galaxy” isn’t even a year old yet. We believe today that we have shown a plethora of games and genres that can satisfy the most casual to the most core. Even that doesn’t seem like it’s enough.

We could certainly argue back and forth if the number of current and upcoming Wii games is "enough" for the "core" gamer's appetite, but to include Mario Kart and Wii Fit in the response seems rather odd to me.  Just how exactly did Nintendo train this guy after he left VH1?

General Chat / Editing Pix, Clips, and Songs on a Mac
« on: October 04, 2008, 08:32:25 PM »
Anyone here good with creating movies on a Mac?  Basically I'm trying to create a video for a song I wrote (in mp3 format now) and I want to use both pictures and MPEG 4's to overlay over the top of the song.  I've tried using iMovie 06 and its not to helpful.  Anyone know of some freeware that gets the job done?  Not looking for anything too fancy, just something simple.

Nintendo Gaming / Tornado
« on: September 01, 2008, 02:55:53 PM »
I actually received some new info in this months Nintendo Power.  They previewed a game called "Tornado" for the DS.  Not much is known about it except you create the twisters with your stylus and then proceed to blow them to create havoc.  This chain reaction then brings captured cities from Earth on a distant planet, back to Earth.

I searched the entire Internets and this was all I could find.  Looks different to say the least....

Nintendo Gaming / Best DS Arcade Racer?
« on: August 19, 2008, 11:42:39 AM »
So I've been trying to find a good mindless arcade racer on the DS for a while now and keep coming up short.  Thus far I have Ridge Racer and Race Driver. My complaints with the games thus far are:

Ridge Racer:  Had this game had tighter controls and the ability to advance without requiring first it'd be a pretty decent title.  As it is, its pretty frustrating.
Race Driver Create and Race:  Great game but its more of a driving simulation.  On the handheld I'd rather zone out than constantly stare at a map to break for corners every five seconds.

Anyone out there found a good arcade racer they'd recommend for the DS (Mario Kart and Diddy aside, as they aren't really "arcade racers").

From what I've read  in reviews it appears the following may be the best options:

Need for Speed Pro Street:
Speed Racer:
Juiced 2:
Asphalt 2:

Any recommendations or is the DS just void in this area?

General Gaming / Any Multi Console Owners Picking up Madden 09?
« on: August 14, 2008, 12:41:14 PM »
If so, which version and why?  Madden 07 was one of the few games with motion controls tacked onto a normal came that I thought worked quite nicely.  Having to throw your arm and press the correct receiver button in the pocket really added a layer of urgency not found in previous iterations.

Currently, I don't yet have a PS3 (waiting for the price drop), but once I do, I may still choose the Wii version despite the stellar graphics the PS3/360 offers.  Anyone else?

Nintendo Gaming / Anyone Still Play Endless Ocean?
« on: August 13, 2008, 02:30:25 PM »
As I picked up Power Pros at Circuit City the other day, I noticed Endless Ocean was still selling for its original price of $29.00.  Given thats it has a nice polish to it with some casual appeal, I'm sure its sold fairly well.

That said, does anyone still play this title who picked it up earlier this year?  If so, what keeps you coming back?  Initially I thought about picking it up, but decided not to thinking my wife and I would grow bored with it in a few days.

General Chat / Ahh! My Hard Drive!
« on: July 31, 2008, 12:05:42 AM »
I know, I know, "I should have backed it up".  I know, I know, "I should have got the extended warranty".  Problem is, I didn't, and now 2 years of purchased music, personally recorded music, lyrics, and all sorts of pictures are probably gone forever (awaiting data recovery).

That said, does anyone else have a similar experience?  Who has the worst crash story?  Please tell me I'm not the only one.

--> For the record, the internal drive that failed was on an Imac, and this was the first Mac I've ever purchased (Never had a hard drive crash on a PC).

General Gaming / Controller Timeline
« on: July 22, 2008, 04:02:11 PM »
Here's an interesting video I saw recently about the history of controllers.  Most of it you probably know already, but they do a good job of tying it all together.
http://www.onnetworks.com/videos/play-value/controllers?autoplay=true

Moral of the video, Nintendo pwns the controller market!  That said, what's your favorite controller of all time?  Mine is the N64's, though its clunky today, at the time there was nothing else like it, and I I found it quite comfortable for my large hands.

General Gaming / Console Acquisition Time?
« on: July 19, 2008, 04:22:07 PM »
So, now that E3 is said and done, and we have seen each console's line up and price for many months to come, is anyone who is currently a single or double console owner thinking of acquiring another?

Personally, I just own a Wii and DS, and I'm really considering getting a PS3.  I fully understand the online gaming component isn't fully there yet, but out of all the 360/PS3 exclusives, Little Big Planet is the killer app for me.  Additionally, I recently purchased an HDTV and its just begging for some Blue Ray.

General Chat / Now I'm a Runner Up!
« on: July 06, 2008, 10:31:44 PM »
Anyone here listen to the Joystiq podcast?  If so, you may have known about the Now You're a Song Writer Contest they recently held.  Just thought it'd be cool to let you know that one of NWR's very own forum members came in 2nd!

Basically, we had to rewrite the lyrics to the end song of "You Have to Burn the Rope".  The only requirement was the song had to be about a great video game experience.  Naturally, I immediately thought of The Merchant from Resident Evil 4 and thus, a classic was born.

In the end, they seemed to really dig my tune, but they went went some guy who sang about Shadow of The Colossus instead.  Oh well, though 2nd place is just the first place loser I still get a free DS game.  All of that time spent playing guitar and singing in my Mom's basement has finally paid off!

For anyone who hasn't played You Have to Burn the Rope, here's the link (A must play):

For anyone who is to lazy to play, but wants to hear the song at the end:

General Chat / Podcast Reccomendations
« on: June 03, 2008, 05:33:26 PM »
Hey All, I'm fortunate enough to be able to listen to my ipod at work, and thus have a lot of time for podcasts.  I was just curious what your favorites are so maybe we can all find some new shows we didn't know about.  Obviously, Radio Free Nintendo goes w/o saying, but a few others I listen to are:

- This American Life - Radio show w/ random stories about Americans
- Game Theory - Game podcast about the business side of the industry
- ESPN Mike and Mike - Sports commentary
- IGN Tech Fetish - A surprisingly well put together show about all things tech
- Jardo's Electro Sessions - A two hour mix of electronica and funk
- WNYC's Radio Lab - Radio show that investigates random questions about life.

Any suggestions?

I'm still having trouble beating all circuits on 150cc in MK Wii.  Has anyone tried the product below?  I'm wondering if it'll increase my performance.
