Return of the King was an excellent movie.
I didn't watch the whole Oscars cermony, but jusdging from the hilarious LotR spoof that Billy Crystal did with Jack Nicolson and Michael Moore (didn't watch all of it either), it was going to be a LotR-dominated show.
The song he sung at the beginning was funny also.

Longest I ever went without was a year. We had sold off the SNES so I could buy a N64, but since it wasn't enough to buy that and a game, I had to wait to see if I got into the maths advanced class before mum would give me the extra money to buy it, and that was at the end of the year, so yeah ;__;
no games for meeee!

Ugh, wrestling.

My gaming thirsts are quenched until I get my hands on MGS in April.
Unlike all of you, I can stay calm during gaming droughts
I haven't played my Gamecube (or the SNES i borrowed for that matter) for a bit more than a week now.

The fact that the press release says that MK: D is the goriest and most bloody thus far means that it will be only popular amongst the casuals as such.
While the MK name will live with oldies, it's the blood that they will focus on.

Unfortunately.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: SK developing next Zelda
« on: February 25, 2004, 01:10:26 PM »
Miyamoto said that he wouldn' be happy with a realistic Zelda until EVERYTHING was perfect. No clipping, no small graphics and polygonal mistakes.
I would agree with him to an extent.
I really don't think we'll see anything like this 'perfect zelda' until next gen.

We'll have to see if SK can make a truly unique and original 3rd person game (no fixed cinematic cameras ala ED) with a good camera system before we'll be able to think if they can do a realistic Zelda, even though we know EAD woulf be helping.

They already DO bash the GC's graphics compared to PS2. They are PS2 fanboys
I mean, Gran Turismo is like the pinnacle of graphics, it seems, so anything that is not realistic is gonna get a beating from them. But if it's on PS2, then they will go how stylish it looks. Like how most people I know bashed Killer 7's graphics but were intruiged by the style, and said it would be tons better on PS2.

I don't know what the principals in YOUR schools in the US seem to think about uniforms, but it is most definitely not about using uniforms to 'control' kids.
We are told to wear our uniforms to show that we are proud of our school and it's heritage.
You know how you see English/Scottish/Irish lads getting together in one huge group at a rugby match and in school and chanting warcries?
I loved doing all that at school. It boosted school spirit, and you were all mates. All part of our heritage.
It's more wth private schools though, and our uniforms are more formal than say just simple catholc schools and public schools.

While it can get sickening, having to wear your uniform 'with pride' and having to practise the warcries, but we all knew it was what bonded us all together.

Anyway, I can't change the US school system, not the New South Wales system either. Whether uniforms breed dictatorship in some, or where casual clothes all the time encourages rebellionism and further, more obvious split in social class is totally up to whoever decides what they have to decide about these things. And I am totally fine with that.

Mouse, the reason why every school in Australia has uniforms is cause it's a hike back to the country's British heritage. Even the state schools have uniforms, but they aren't as enforced as catholic and private schools.

Uniforms don't take away your sense of identity and make you a faceless, mindless zombie controlled by the headless dictator that is the Principal, contrary to what you and a certain Simpsons episode might make you think
There may be heaps of rules that must be followed when it comes to uniforms, but if you lived here, you wouldn't think uniforms were that bad either. And everyone here would agree that it takes away one more life-threatening decision from your mornings.
I dunno. I like our school system much better that the US system. MUCH more.

Being the cool kid AND getting good grades is like the ultimate nightmare for the pure geek. Not only can they get a sh*tload of girls to go out with them, they can can kick your ass in the Maths test too. And thats a bother.
And something I've seen all too often.

I've noticed that when I was at school, there was not really any 'social class' of sorts. We were all friends, but we didn't sit together in one huge group
In my group alone, we are in our little subgroups.
So we're all friends, we just don't go out together or anything.

And have you noticed all the schools that complain about having school uniforms? You don't get that here in Australia, but it's mostly the girls that complain. I, for one, love the school uniform, as do nearly everyone I know. Why? It lets you go to school without having to think about what to wear. Nearly all girls these days look like sluts when they go out anyway, so why the hell would they wanna look like one when they go to school. It would just encouarge more rebellionism (whatever ) and split everyone up further just cause they don't dress according to the fashions of the time. I don't have that much to wear to begin with, so thank God.

At Uni, we of course don't have uniforms, and we dress however we want, cause we are passed the point where looks and trends matter, and frankly it's just stupid to tease someone who dresses 'weird'. Not all of us have clothes for every single day anyway, and I see all the hot girls wearing the same thing every week.
So school is perhaps the start of the dirty, rotton consumerist bastard/bitch in all of us.

When I was in primary school I never had trendy clothes or anything, just what mum bought me. And I never out gel in my hair until Year 12 when my old hair style just didn't look as good as it used to (it went all boofy).
My cousin who is in 6th grade now is almost the same, but he has 'some' good-looking clothes and my older female cousins say he looks like a stud when/if he gels his hair. They watch too much Queer Eye.
It's actually come to the point he seems to dress 'better' than me, and that disturbs me a lot.
My other younger cousin, his sister who's in Year 3, isn't slutty or anything, but she has clothes that are skin-tight, and she's been on a 'date' already. It may be cute, but the fact that my older cousins keep encouraging her makes it more obvious that they 'enforce' the new consmerist lifestyle on them.

And that sickens me to no end.

It's a lot like how when someone murders/steals/etc and then they try to blame it on some form of mental instability, like an illness or their previous use of drugs or alcohol.

Booooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

In what gave me the sh*ts when I read it, the Victorian Government is striking a deal with Sony, and later Microsoft, to provide small, local developers with free PS2 and Xbox development kits to get them started for development on those consoles.

No mention of Nintendo ANYWHERE in this deal.

It's great for Australian game-development for sure, but the fact is, this is just another look at how much people care about Nintendo. Even the Australia Game Developers Association of Australia (GDAA) is in this deal, supporting the Government and Sony. If the Government are supporting Sony and Microsoft, then Nintendo have no chance in Australia.

Your thoughts on this, which is another blow to Nintendo.

It's been a couple of years and we've never needed a hard drive.
I don't think there's any need for one now.
THe SD Card idea was good, but it may be a tad too late for that, unless it is one of the peripherals NIntendo is planning.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Goldeneye to be used by EA for next Bond game
« on: February 18, 2004, 09:16:14 PM »
The thing with that is that it would simply be a remake or Goldeneye, and EA would have to buy the game's copyright off Rare or Nintendo. Unless of of course, Nintendo make it so that the GEremake is only on GC

But EA is not remaking Goldeneye. It is a completely different game that just so happens to be based on the film as well.
Since this is the case, expect millions of dollars more to be going toward this project than they ever spent on Everything or NOthing.

Quite a long read there, ness.
Nothing I can really say that you've already touched upon. I'd like to add a bit as to why people like to buy violent/immoral games/movies.

Peer pressure.
This takes many forms - the main one being that someone is forcing their opinions on you in order to mould you into someone more fitting of their standards.
You want to at least be known as a cool guy, someone who people like. But you are, for lack of a better word, a loser (don't take this personally ). So what do you do? You see what is cool, and you go do it. You dress in the styles that everyone else is wearing, you act the way they do, you hang around the places they hang. GTA3 is the coolest game around, so buy that too. Jackass is a cool movie, go watch that, and pretend to enjoy it.
While the situation I just pointed out doesnt necessarily encourage a person to be violent, it has encouraged them to buy violent games because it was the cool thing to do. Once you bought the game and played it, you could talk to other people about it.

Like you said, you would only become violent from games and movies if you were mentally unstable or without morals to begin with.

I totally support the thing America is doing to prevent more kids from getting their hands on 18+ rated games/movies. But there's always the problem of getting arounf parents who are buying it for their kids - if i were working at a game/video store and i saw a parent being hassled by their kids to get this MA rated movie, I would probably be fired or given a complaint cause I would ask 'thats for mature audiences 18 years and older only. are you sure about renting that for your kids'.

When I was in Year 4 (back in 1994), Dangerous Minds was the most popular movie in our grade amongst the guys. I was invited to a slumber party that year, and all they sang was Gangster's Paradise by Coolio and watching the movie. I was quite disturbed, as my parents, being the resposible (however sheltering) parents they were, never let me watch MA movies till I was 13. We did enjoy watching old-skoo kiddy movies more, like Super Mario Bros and Three Ninjas, but it was the violent movie and the song full of swearing that was popular.

Yeah, it's more about making games more cinematic, which is what people seem to crave these days.
I mean, I was pretty surprised that Nightfire had a theme song in the first place, let alone having one sung by a famous artist for a game.
Has anyone heard the theme song by Mya? Is it a ghey poppy/techno track like Madonna's Die Another Day?

General Chat / RE: A hypothetical question about futuristic racing

Get this: In Extreme G or F-Zero, crashing into a wall or other racer at 1000+km/h just involves a little bit of health taken off the health meter. Where if someone crashed their cars at only 100km/h, it would be like a melting-together of metal, flesh and bone. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference

In the July 2000 issue of N64 Magazine (now called NGC Magazine) from the UK, there is a feature called 'Go Gadget Go!', in which they ask David Bachelor, a NASA Astrophysicist about the plauibility of some of the things found in Nintendo's games, like Link's Hover Boots, the Banana Ports in Donkey Kong 64, the Lightsabres in Super Smash Bros, and, amongst other similar things, the racers in F-Zero X.

5. Magnetic Racers
From: F-Zero X
What it does: Most notabe on the theoratically shaky Big Blue track, F-Zero's futurisic magnetic cars are able to stick to the track at speeds of around 1000km/h.
ETA: 2015
David's Verdict: Magnetic levitation like this is possible, given the right materials for the track and terrifically precise sensors in the car's bottom to regulare the spacing between the track ad car. The stability is the challenge in building something like this, however. The limit on it's performace would still be the driver's bodily integrity [referring to the Arwings in Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64 in the US)]...and their ability to stay conscious while the blood rushes to their heads while upside-down on the Big Blue track!'

And here's something way cool!

7. Beam Swords
From: Super Smash Bros
What it does: 'Borrowed from a certain movie trilogy, the beam sword is a shimmering beam of pure energy that does a fair amount of damage to human flesh and bone.
ETA: 2030!!!!!!
David's Verdict: If you could generate a torch made of ionized gas (known as plasma) using a handle-sized object, the something like the Lightsabre could be the result. Put a strong magnetic field intot he handle, and it might shape the plasma into a linear, sabre-shaped cutting weapon. Present-day power supplies aren't up to the task, but who's to say about future compact batteries? Plasma is used to cut in industry today. Just don't expect a neat cut...thats just fantasy, Mario!
