If the early impressions of Wii Music are anything to go by, I think GoldenPhoenix has an important point that this holiday season may be a letdown beyond simply a lack of Nintendo-published traditional games. Looking at some of the interviews from Cammie Dunaway and Reggie, it seems that the only way Nintendo may patch-up their sparse holiday schedule is with WiiWare titles. I remain very enthused by the prospect of what Nintendo's internal teams could create for WiiWare, but we still haven't seen any signs of them committing that kind of creative talent to WiiWare development yet.

Regardless of how the holiday lineup itself turns out, I think Nintendo would do well to organise some manner of showcase for previously unseen projects at some time this year in order to address the apprehensions of certain sectors of its audience. It is necessary to engage these consumers if their relatively consistent flow of software purchases for Wii is to be maintained. If development on all such projects really isn't far enough along for Nintendo to give them a substantial showing at some point this year, questions need to be asked regarding how Nintendo has managed the development schedules of its various teams.

I currently do not own a console other than Wii. I've been leaning towards picking up a 360 for a while, and since I got a HDTV a few months back, I think it's very likely that I'll get one in the not-too-distant future. This is not due to any dissatisfaction with what I'm getting out of Wii, in fact I've only been getting more and more use out of it over the past few months with Brawl and great third party titles like Boom Blox, Pro Evo, and Okami. My interest is due to the software library that the 360 has now built up (though I remain relatively unenthused by FPS games, but I'd doubtlessly get some of them with a 360 anyway).

Nintendo Gaming / Re: NWR Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff Tournament
« on: July 20, 2008, 12:55:54 PM »
I have no experience with Tecmo Bowl (my first football video game was Madden '92, which I played an enormous amount of, not least because the Bills were one of the best teams in that game - oh how I miss those days), but I'm enough of a football junkie to give this some significant consideration if the feedback is good. It's probably not a day one purchase for me, but I'm quite enthused about the prospect of an arcadey football game on a handheld, so perhaps I can join in a tournament at some point (and presumably get whipped by the Tecmo vets out there).

As devastatingly satirical as Jeff's comments may be, I feel like they amount to an unwarranted shot at Jon. I appreciate the point you are making (I've been poking fun at Jon's serious ways with my avatar for like a month), but in this context--a thread entirely unrelated to previous debates, or even the content of Tecmo Bowl itself--it is difficult to interpret these comments as anything other than purposefully belittling of a fellow staff member.

No word on the developer (or much of anything else) right now. I also would be hugely encouraged if Treasure is developing this game, but you have to wonder whether Konami would already have released that info if that were the case.

The next instalment in the classic arcade shooter series will be downloadable from the Wii Shop Channel.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=16414

Following the emerging trend of renowned franchises being resurrected through digital distribution services, Konami has announced that its classic arcade shooter franchise Gradius will appear on WiiWare in the form of Gradius Rebirth.

The first new title in the series since 2004's Gradius V on PlayStation 2, Gradius Rebirth will utilise a visual style that is highly reminiscent of Gradius III, which is currently available in its SNES form on Wii through the Virtual Console service, along with the NES conversion of the original Gradius. It is currently unclear whether Rebirth will be a remake of a previous Gradius game, or instead feature an entirely original design.

« on: July 14, 2008, 01:30:57 PM »
I agree with Pale that this is unusual for Nintendo in that it is a concession of the Wii Remote's limitations. The timing is also of note, in that they felt the need for its announcement to occur before Microsoft's press conference. It seems like they wanted to ensure that any announcement of an ostensibly superior Wii Remote-style controller from Microsoft had its legs cut out from under it before it was made.

This is one of the first references to Kirby Wii on a release schedule (scroll all the way to the bottom of the long list) back in September 2006:

http://wii.ign.com/articles/732/732678p1.html

It's listed there last as TBA, whereas most everything else towards the bottom is listed as TBA 2007, so I remember taking that to mean it would probably be an '08 game.

And no Art Rooney is not the correct answer, sorry.

That totally slipped my mind.  I can't believe Kirby Wii didn't come up... even after we talked about the DS game.

Hey James, it keeps slipping Nintendo's mind considering they've had it listed as a 2008 game since late 2006, so it's only natural.

I'm going to open up a contest for anyone who can guess the person of questionable sanity that we were discussing during the beginning of the stinger.

TalkBack / Re: FEATURES: Whither Now, Samus Aran?
« on: July 12, 2008, 09:44:57 AM »
So because a new Metroid game isn't announced for the first e3 after Corruption an article about Metroid possibly dying or going through a drastic overhall is made?  I appreciate a feature about such a big franchise but why the random doom and gloom?

I wouldn't even call it oft neglected.  It was neglected once, during the N64 era.  There has been Metroid games released for every other console and handheld as well as two for the Gamecube followed by one in the very first year of the Wii.  After the game being released not even a year ago Samus is now in her usual cameo in Smash Bros.  Metroid isn't going away and they aren't going to release a new one every year either because that is not how Nintendo does big franchises.

The intro is simply meant to raise the issue that the Metroid franchise's timely continuation is not certain in the same way as it is for Mario, Zelda, or even Animal Crossing and sub-sets of the Mario brand like Mario Kart and Mario Party. It is not meant to predict anything (that is left to the articles within), but instead provides some historical context to frame the topic.

The sense in which it can be said that Metroid has been neglected multiple times during its life: It took five years to get its first sequel, whereas other 8-bit classics (Mario, Zelda, Castlevania, Mega Man) had sequels within a couple of years on the NES. Not to mention that when it did arrive on handhelds in 1991, it didn't get another handheld game until 11 years later. Then of course there's the eight year period where no games at all were released between Super Metroid and Prime/Fusion. Perhaps more importantly though, I'd consider the four years of the DS without a true Metroid game (I own and enjoy both Metroid Prime Pinball and Hunters, but I no more conisder them true Metroid games than I do Mario Golf or Mario vs DK vis a vis Mario) to be a pretty significant case of neglect.

As for whether the franchise needs a major overhaul, personally I would be happy (if not totally ecstatic) with more of the same. However, stating my satisfaction with the series so far and asking for no change would not have been very thought-provoking as a basis for a feature, and I certainly do believe that the series would benefit from being significantly refreshed (in the right way) at this point.

TalkBack / Re: FEATURES: Whither Now, Samus Aran?
« on: July 11, 2008, 11:59:50 PM »
I'm skeptical of Greg's power/zero suit switching idea.  Not the concept itself, I suppose, so much as the justification.  You make it sound like Samus is clumsy or inagile while wearing her power suit, which isn't the case at all.  Asside from sinking in water, Samus has always been perfectly agile in her suit.  If she can't defeat a certain enemy yet, why not just run (as she does when encountering the SA-X in Fusion)?  Or if she has to be sneaky, why would she purposefully shed her suit and make herself more vulnerable to attack in the event that she gets caught?

Naturally, the relative talents of Samus in both her forms would have to be carefully balanced. In terms of foot-speed, I see Zero Suit Samus as being quicker off the mark than in the Power Suit, which has always required a good head of steam to get up to full speed (culminating in the Speed Boost ability). So without the armour she'd be better able to evade enemies in tight spaces, and her weapon could once again be capable of stunning enemies that Samus cannot yet destroy with her Arm Cannon. With regard to jumping, she would not be able to jump as high or as far as in the Power Suit, but would be able to make sudden leaps/somersaults over enemies, stun them, and then run out of their range. So it's not so much that the Samus we know is clunky, rather that Zero Suit would be extremely quick while limited in other ways.

Inevitably, the reasons for Samus to shed her armour would not be seamlessly natural, anymore than having her crash land without her suit at the end of Zero Mission was. But they could be skilfully rationalised with game design and plot devices so as to make these transitions as unobtrusive as possible. For instance, the indestructible enemies could be guarding an important upgrade for the Power Suit, so she cannot simply flee, but must bypass them in order to claim the item and thus progress further. A story device could be something like she's infiltrating an area with sensors that can detect the energy signature of the suit, and therefore must go in without it, evading detection until she can deactivate the sensors. These are obviously just a few simple examples, many many more could be conceived of; the key is to weave them into the game design adroitly so they do not seem overly contrived.

But ultimately the point of my piece is that Samus would be less powerful outside of the suit, hence the sensation of empowerment that comes when she is able to activate it once more and enjoy the ability to move around and destroy enemies relatively unfettered. Over time the Zero Suit form could gain more and more abilities to become useful outside of the specifically crafted areas, but she would remain significantly more constrained outside of the armour than inside it.

I've got the issue in my hands now, so I can verify that this information is in the magazine. It's scheduled to hit the newstands after the Nintendo press event (subscribers get it early), so I'm not sure whether that factored into them letting this loose a bit. They also cover themselves with the "if it all goes to plan (and our sources haven't played a mean trick on us)" line.

Having put some more time in with the 1 player stuff and gotten a chance to try some multiplayer, I certainly don't feel like I've been shortchanged having spent the equivalent of $58 to buy Boom Blox. Multiplayer has been an absolute riot so far, and I've just scratched the surface with that. I can understand how this may not be everyone's cup of tea, and it's not what I'd describe as a steal by any means, but the value's there if you think you like the sound of what the game is all about.

Count me among the Tim Russert-Meet the Press appreciators, I was absolutely shocked when the news broke of his sudden passing. I'd been catching the show on iTunes for the better part of the last year, and he did an outstanding job of moderating it.

In fairness to Tom Brokaw, he's only really done one proper edition of Meet the Press since being made interim moderator, and that was on the road at the governors convention rather than in the studio in Washington. He should be given time to hit his stride in filling such big shoes. Also he has one of the most rich and incredible sounding voices I've ever heard, I could listen to it all day.

As for podcast recommendations aside from Meet the Press, mine are as follows:

1up Yours
Retronauts (almost always brilliant when they can manage to put one out, Sharkey and Parish are aural delights)
ESPN Football Today with Jeremy Green - nice for football junkies (and people who love hearing the clip of Denny Green going bananas over and over again)
The Bugle - satirical podcast with John Oliver, good if you like British humour and can take having the UK and US being made fun of merciliessly.

And don't forget Radio Trivia!

TalkBack / PAL WiiWare Update
« on: July 08, 2008, 05:06:14 PM »
WiiWare week on the Wii Shop Channel brings My Pokémon Ranch, Pop, and DLC for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=16300

The bi-weekly update schedule for WiiWare in PAL territories continued last week with two new games and additional content for the WiiWare launch title, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King.

My Pokémon Ranch (1,000 Wii Points) connects wirelessly with Pokémon Diamond and Pearl for Nintendo DS, allowing players to store up to 1,000 of their Pokémon in a ranch where they can be photographed interacting with Miis.

From developers Nnooo comes Pop (700 Wii Points), a bubble-popping high score challenge that debuted as a launch title for WiiWare in North America. Chaining bubbles of the same colour is the key to reaching higher and higher scores, which can be uploaded to online leaderboards and included in messages to friends via WiiConnect24.

Finally, Square Enix has released additional content for My Life as a King through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay & Play. The list of features includes further dungeons, costumes, and more:

  • Infinity Spire (300 Wii Points)
  •
  • Library (200 Wii Points)
  •
  • Castle Renovation (100 Wii Points)
  •
  • New Royal Outfit (100 Wii Points)
  •
  • New Chancellor Outfit 2 (100 Wii Points)
  •

POKÉMON AND POP HIT WiiWARE!

Get set for a Pokémon treat this week as the phenomenon debuts on WiiWare with My Pokémon Ranch. Watch as Pokémon and Miis interact with each other for the first time! Enjoy the relaxing Ranch life by viewing your Ranch and its Pokémon, taking pictures, and sending those pictures to your friends. The more Pokémon and Miis that you bring to your Ranch, the more fun it becomes!

My Pokémon Ranch can be linked with the Nintendo DS Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version Game Cards to deposit the Pokémon you’ve caught in these games to your Ranch! You can deposit a maximum of 1,000 Pokémon from up to eight different Game Cards! Make your Ranch livelier by having fun with your friends and family! My Pokémon Ranch is available to download today for 1000 Wii Points.

Next up is Pop and it’s all about popping bubbles! It may sound simple but there are lots of things you can do to get a high-score and have fun. Just keep an eye on the timer because when it runs out it's game over!

Each bubble is worth both points and time so try to fill up your timer first then focus on scoring high. You can then start to chain the same colour of bubble for big points by popping bubbles of the same colour. This is a great way to increase you score.

Friends can join you in a game of Pop, too! Whenever you are playing all they need to do is connect their Wii Remote and then join in the action. Watch out because they may start using power-ups to hold you back! If they do try to pump up some bubbles or detonate a nuke this will create a shock-wave which will destroy any matching colours of bubbles it touches.

Finally there are badges for completing certain objectives; online high-score tables and WiiConnect24 messages so you can keep up with your friends’ progress and boast about your own. Download Pop today for 700 Wii Points.

Also available this week, get your hands on some exciting new add-on content for FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES: My Life as a King™ (WiiWare) via Nintendo Wi-Fi

Connection Pay & Play.

Simply select "Purchase Add-on Content" from either the main game menu or the in-game castle menu, and choose from the following:

Infinity Spire (300 Wii Points)

Adds Infinity Spire dungeons to the game.

Library (200 Wii Points)

Adds a dungeon containing many large elementite to help develop your kingdom.

Castle Renovation (100 Wii Points)

Adds a jukebox and the ability to change adventurers' names to the castle.

New Royal Outfit 2 (100 Wii Points)
