Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 206: Ambidextrosity

I think we should consider developing a special "YOU'RE WRONG" stamp bearing the visage of James Jones that would be emblazoned on the top of every NWR review that James disagrees with. The only argument against this that I can see is that numerically it may be easier to simply mark the reviews he doesn't disagree with.

We revisit Red Steel 2 and other Wii games, then blast through tons of Listener Mail!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/23866

This week's New Business is actually focused on older games, ranging from yesterday's moderate hit Super Mario Galaxy 2, this winter's flop, Red Steel 2, continuing back in time through evergreen titles like Mario Kart Wii, flirting with early DS weirdness like The Rub Rabbits (a.k.a. Feel the Magic 2), and then jumping all the way back to the 90's retro scene with Mischief Makers and Gley Lancer. Jonny wraps it all up with a new game that feels a decade old, the revival of Hydro Thunder.

After the break, it's time to start catching up on Listener Mail. We usually read four emails per week, but this time it's seven wonderful letters from our beloved fans. Topics include the 3DS stylus, Miyamoto's next genre/mascot, great moments in Nintendo history, Sega CD on Virtual Console, the well-tread minefield of game reviews, accessibility issues in the motion control era, and news of James's next epic rant. Whew! Please keep those emails coming, and don't forget to include your name (or screen name) and location. Use this web form or the address mentioned on the show.

Do the lot of you no longer pull comments from the RetroActive thread? You mention them in a general sense but you didn't read off any. I believe the previous RetroActive was also like this, and the one before might have been as well.

Both the Metroid II (RetroActive #12) and Super Mario RPG (#11) discussions included forum comments being pulled from the relevant threads and read aloud on the show, as was the case with every previous RetroActive (even for the apathy-inducing Ninja Spirit). Jonny explained his reasons for handling Mother 3 forum comments in a different way during this episode.

The RFN crew becomes tame!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/23835

This episode is a bit unusual due to the split format and revolving door of podcast crew. It kicks off with a relatively brief New Business, which nonetheless covers Dragon Quest IX (and the recent GameStop community event), Rabbids Go Home, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and the cheap but surprisingly useful Rock Band Portable Drum Kit. We also revisit the popular topic of how to get your significant other into gaming.

After the break, Greg splits but we add on both James and Neal to blow out RetroActive #13: Mother 3. With varying levels of completion, we dodge late game spoilers but do try to address the overall themes and spend quite a lot of time on the heart-breaking (but oddly presented) events at the end of Chapter 1. We also discuss gameplay changes over the course of this RPG and, thanks to Neal's knowledge of the final chapters, become motivated to keep playing. Hopefully, you will be too!

« on: August 01, 2010, 06:36:09 PM »
oh yeah I thought Greg could have talked about his impressions in more detail he sort of just glanced over everything.

Even as it was, my New Business was the longest of all of us this week, so perhaps you can imagine how the editor in me didn't much care for the prospect of me speaking for half an hour before anyone else got a chance to get going - especially as I'd be reeling off a bunch of demos that have already been discussed by the E3 crew. Hence, I decided to keep the focus on 3DS and Metroid: Other M this week, but I intend to discuss my detailed thoughts regarding games like DKC Returns and GoldenEye on future episodes.

The discussion about old school games is pretty lengthy considering it could be answered with "those games are good". It doesn't require nostalgic indoctrination, the games are just fun on their own merits.

Not only could it be answered that way, it was answered that way; in fact, I used similar phraseology myself when addressing that question. Yes there was additional discussion around that fundamental point, but the point was made very deliberately - do you object to there being further discussion or are you under the impression that this point wasn't made? As both the podcast editor and a regular participant, it is important to me how the discussion comes across to our listeners, and I would like to better understand your feedback.

Neal drops in to tell us all about Minstrels and Meowgicians in DQIX.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/23715

With Jonny being mobbed by hordes of jubilant Spaniards, the RFN crew called in Neal Ronaghan of the NWR Newscast to give us the inside scoop on his review of Dragon Quest IX. There's much praise for the latest instalment in Square Enix's whimsical RPG series in New Business, and even Jon gets in on the Dragon Questing upon his long awaited return to the show, but he has larger concerns as news breaks of another Cho Aniki game being inflicted on an unsuspecting (and largely uninterested) Western audience. Meanwhile, Greg ruminates on the prospect of Face Training being localised for Europe, and James is appalled to discover his beloved Mega Man franchise taking cues from Samus Aran in Mega Man ZX for DS.

In Listener Mail, we grapple with Nintendo's shifting position in the distinctly dubious "casual-hardcore" spectrum, pondering how much things have really changed since the days of the N64. Next, we discuss what is behind the enduring appeal of old-school side-scrollers and the notion of history repeating itself over the console cycles, before closing out the show with a healthy dose of portable talk, including plenty of 3DS musings and some more of your cherished DS memories.

Our next RetroActive discussion has started - head into our forum thread for Mother 3 to contribute your thoughts on the game for a future episode of RFN!

Were you guys really surprised at the low turnout?

Given that it was for King of Clubs, in a word: "no"

Hyping up the story and holding it back was all part of the fun. Of course it wasn't really "too shocking" to air, but if there hadn't been any mystery or anticipation surrounding it, we wouldn't have got some of the really amusing and creative stories that we did--obviously it would have been nice to receive a few more entries, but the ones we did get made it worthwhile.

The only reason why I didn't include the story in an episode for everyone is because I set up the contest rules to incentivise listeners to exercise their creativity in an amusing way, and then I had to follow through on those rules (like the Joker I'm a man of my word, but when it comes to winning a prize like King of Clubs I'm afraid we have to live in a world with rules).

James' your memory is deceiving you here somewhat--your discussion about the blog not being visible yet was not recorded for me to "remove" any "objections" (I assume you're not charging me with travelling back in time and somehow erasing your words from the space time continuum), and secondly the last thing you said about the blog before we recorded the segment was that you were likely to make it visible between then and the episode's post date.

Is my IPhone stupid or are the chapter pictures and breaks missing from the last 2 episodes? If they just aren't being done anymore I’m formally complaining.

The chapter art and breaks are still being made, however what's happening currently is that the enhanced AAC file is going out a little while later (so far it's been under 24 hours)--if you download 200 or 201 now, you'll find they have the chapters as normal.

This disruption is due to the fact that the method we non-Mac users have been using to create the enhanced AAC file for the past two and a half years was discovered to be incompatible with iOS4 (people couldn't stream the file on devices using it), so now the enhanced file has to wait until a Mac user on staff (great thanks to Andy) can create it using my instructions. Obviously I don't want this to delay the episode being posted for everyone, so for now we have this unfortunate lag.

Clearly this isn't ideal and we're looking into ways we can eradicate this problem going forward (Apple tech support have been of no help so far), but to be clear you can still get the enhanced version of the most recent episodes after iOS4 hit.

Podcast Discussion / Mother 3 - RetroActive #13 Discussion Thread
« on: July 11, 2010, 05:16:19 PM »
Please use this thread to discuss our next RetroActive game, Mother 3 for Game Boy Advance. Note that we'll be pulling quotes out of this thread to be read on an upcoming episode of Radio Free Nintendo during our discussion of the game. Comments made here are to be limited solely to the game's contents, and will help to direct the podcast coversation.

Also any clue as to when the precious few of us listeners who sent in our creative attempts should expect to receive the precious audio file of the true tale we butchered in text form?

The audio should be going out to the brave few sometime on Friday, as I want to take some time to clean up the raw audio of the story that I saved from RFN 194. I would have liked to do this over the past weekend, but editing RFN 200 was such a marathon that it just wasn't going to happen. Patience my friend, soon you will know the (in every sense) awful truth...

189
Having (as always) tested downloading and playing the file in iTunes, I encountered no problems on my end, but I'm not using anything with os4 running on it. Can you re-download the file to see if we can shed any more light on the nature of this problem?

TalkBack / Re: IMPRESSIONS: Metroid: Other M

I know you people hate Malstrom but this is an email from someone else:

I think you just offended longtime NWR forum-goer Robert Downey Jr.

I am conerned about the narrative elements of Other M being obtrusive, and that concern would stand even if the cut scenes were well executed with solid voice acting, but the legitimate scepticism surrounding the quality of Other M's storytelling compounds my larger fear of it getting in the way of gameplay. However, I think it's unsound to draw sweeping conclusions from a demo based on the early phases of the game, as these are far more likely to be stricken with heavy-handed exposition than the bulk of the game.

Third parties destroying their own reputation on the Wii was pretty much a tragedy of the commons thing. I don't think that's what killed the sales on Red Steel 2 though, that's likely a combination of a poisonous brand and the art style, not general third party reputation. Also let's remember that Ubisoft said Red Steel 2 performed up to expectations.

I think that's a good way of putting what has happened with third parties in the low barriers-to-entry market environment Nintendo has fostered for Wii. We're all aware that there's a range of titles that have sold well, and I personally have enjoyed a good number of third party games -- in the past year or so, you've heard me talk on RFN about Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Klonoa, Muramasa, Tiger 10, Little King's Story, Dead Space Extraction, A Boy and His Blob, Guitar Hero Metallica, Boom Blox Bash Party, Silent Hill, and Red Steel 2 -- some of which have performed well commercially and others haven't. However, the reality remains that third party support is relatively weak on Wii, and as KDR says their collective reputation has become irreparably damaged over the years that Wii has been on the market.

As for Red Steel 2, clearly it did not sell all that poorly for it to meet Ubisoft's expectations, but Ubisoft did revise those expectations down sharply (by half, if I recall correctly) almost immediately before launch.

193
If I have to make up for it then Jon can never account for himself no mater how many Nintendo games he buys and doesn't play.

I don't disagree with that statement.

194
More like: It wouldn't be RFN if I didn't hold down the Nintendo Fort.

I'll let you know when you've finally made up for your repeated droning on about The Last Remnant.

Regarding the story contest for Ep200: Shaymin has everything just about right, though to be clear, the bit of indie game swag involved in the story was received by someone among the NWR party during PAX East but before the post-Drunkcast chaos, and it then played a pivotal role in that soon-to-be-infamous tale. The "catchphrase" that punctuates the story can indeed be found towards the end of this episode that we recorded with Karl, while the indie game itself has been referenced on RFN a few times in the past, but not specifically in that show. Hope this helps, but once again, accuracy is not a prerequisite for achieving victory in this contest!

Oh and about Now Playing -- there's about three times more audio from the Now Playing recording in the stinger than there is in the segment itself, ergo it most definitely is the worst Now Playing ever from the editor's point of view!

Podcast Discussion / Re: Radio Trivia: Podcast Edition - Episode 73
« on: June 02, 2010, 03:51:29 PM »
It finally happened: I went 5/5 playing Radio Trivia. I thought the import theme would suit me well, and so it did.

Sin & Punishment may be one of my favourite games, but I've always thought the soundtrack was weak, and the same is true of the sequel. I'm not a big fan of Treasure soundtracks in general, but I'll take the whacked-out Genesis stuff like Alien Soldier over the anime stylings of their more recent work. Ikaruga's probably my favourite soundtrack of theirs because it has a strong theme and a grand feel to it that matches well with the on-screen madness.

Thanks to Jonny and TYP for another very entertaining episode of Radio Trivia.
