Prometheus was good, even if a few things fell flat toward the end. It was gorgeous, and Michael Fassbender's channeling of Peter O'Toole was almost eerie. It wasn't an Alien film by any stretch. The plot lines weren't strong enough, and in fact almost felt tacked on in some points. The tone was not the sci-fi gothic horror that was expected. It was much more reminisce of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. In that way, I almost wish they hadn't tied it to Alien at all beyond the Weyland Corporation and the Jockey/Engineers themselves. It could have worked much better focusing soley on the questions of purpose and place that it asked, as opposed to leaning into the suspense of Alien going into the second act.
Nothing was
really left unanswered. Not every little thing had an on-screen explanation, but the reasons were always apparent. Even if not, leaving some things ambiguous can be good. It's not simply lazy writing. Quite the contrary, wanting everything spelled out for you is lazy thinking. Not every movie needs to end with a recap of the plot twists leading up to that point. Not every movie needs to be watered down so that the average movie viewer can easily digest it without every risking a single thought process.
The Alien franchise now has three films officially worth watching.
