TalkBack / Re: Iwata Dissatisfied with Nintendo’s Online Efforts
« on: June 23, 2010, 06:42:38 PM »
Really, wouldn't the system be perfectly acceptable if there were no game-specific Friend Codes?
No, it has other problems (and that actually has never bothered me). There's always lag in every online Wii game because the system isn't powerful enough to run with everything synced up. Games also have to make sacrifices in certain areas to work online, such as graphics and/or framerate. Added features like Wii Speak require even more processing power, and end up as a poor quality product as a result.

I've never seen lag in but a few Smash Bros. matches, and that was undoubtedly due to a joining player's poor connection. Furthermore, the only time I can recall the graphics being dumbed down while online is in split-screen on Mario Kart. I'm not defending the service. It has plenty of flaws, but it's as bad as everyone thinks it is. Game specific friend codes are really the only thing that has ever hindered my enjoyment outside of the lack of voice chat in select titles. Besides, at least Nintendo isn't charging a monthly fee for the privilege of playing their games like Microsoft (and soon Sony) does with their online services! Now if your lag is really as bad as it sounds, you should upgrade your internet service or get a better router setup. Even my archaic Linksys WRT54G (WRT-DD!) pushes plenty of bandwidth via the WiFi connection.

Really, wouldn't the system be perfectly acceptable if there were no game-specific Friend Codes? The system's Friend Code should be enough to link everyone throughout games as well. Oh... and it would have been nice to have voice chat in the only two really big online games: Smash Bros. and Mario Kart. :P

Hypothetically if the were to have VC Dreamcast service tomorrow what kind of games would you want on the service? Here is a list of what I would want on the service:

Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Skies of Arcadia
Power Stone
Power Stone 2
Tech Romancer
Soul Calibur
Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future
Starlancer
Crazy Taxi
Shenmue
Bangai-O
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Grandia 2
Virtua Tennis
Jet Grind Radio

Where is Shenmue 2 and Seaman?!

Tron 2.0 was a great game, and actually served as a good sequel to the original film. It failed at capturing the thrill of the lightcycles however.

Dreamcast emulation would sure be a lot more entertaining than half the other systems that are already supported by the Wii.

Well then I endorse Pale's proposed plan of getting rid of all the rules and letting us eat each other alive. I think that's a good plan with a lot of merit. Basically, I'm in favor of anything that would cause mass chaos on the forums.

Seconded!

I think it looks badass. The concept trailer for the new movie (that will hopefully be made) looked awesome too. I think Mortal Kombat is going to make a huge comeback.

I watched the test trailer several days ago and was actually pretty impressed. I always was a huge fan of the original film, even if Annihilation was unwatchable. This new concept that's being thrown around is interesting. Making the setting more realistic may or may not work in the long run however, given that Mortal Kombat has always stood out amongst fighting games for having a pretty decent storyline.

Just in case there are some people that haven't seen the the proof-of-concept trailer, here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_MqZn7E-mk&feature=player_embedded

It looked like there was some two-on-two action even... Capcom Vs style assists and such. That would be nice.

I liked Mileena's middle-eastern outfit  from the past few games better than what was shown in the trailer. That was previously an alternative outfit, I believe.

Power Stone 2 was almost up there with Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in terms of how often everyone gathered to play. At least with Power Stone everyone could play at the same time, instead of having the loser passing the controller on after a match.

That was pretty impressive looking. As enjoyable as the 3D installments were after MK4, it would be great to be able to go back to 2D. I wonder if they'll keep the weapons system intact however?

Armada was great! I never did find the edge of space. I did however end many nights with "crab finger syndrome" from those triggers. :)

I still have one of my Dreamcasts hooked up in the living room. Admittedly, it hasn't received any playtime for a good long while. It's still my favorite all-around console.

Regarding these "real guitar" controllers, if possible, I would like them to support any real electric guitar.  I don't know the technology involved so maybe they can't do this.  But I'm not going to buy any more guitar controllers.  If I could use my real guitar then I would be much more interested in this game.

Agreed. That's why I've been waiting and hoping for Guitar Rising to actually be released. I don't think that's ever going to happen though. :P

As widely used as keyboards (pianos, organs, etc) are in modern music, they're still not quite as typical through all genres as the pre-existing four instruments are. It'll definitely bring in a lot more New Wave and (hopefully) Psychedelic Rock, I guess.

Why haven't the drums already implemented a MIDI output anyway? They're basic, but would work well enough for an actual instrument.

More console crap. Might as well forget about this installment to Deus Ex. :(

n-phage, I don't feel as if the precision or speed is there when comparing the Wiimote to a decent mouse. If you do, then more power to you. That's one of the huge reasons I do love PC gaming; choice and customization. You can play with whatever input device you want, with relative simplicity at that.

If using the Wiimote has opened up PC gaming to you, then I really couldn't be happier. There are tons of great games exclusively for the PC. Heck, even the multiplatform games are usually better on the PC. If it takes an IR pointer for you to enjoy said titles, then great.

I have a hard time using a joystick for anything but a few specific genres, but know plenty of people that use them for even standard shooters. I have a friend that uses his racing pedals for forward/backward movement in Quake, for example. The mouse I use has a trackball built onto the side. I absolutely adore switching between the trackball and my Wacom tablet in Photoshop, but I'd have a hard time integrating either into my gaming setup. If you have a setup that you prefer, then use it and enjoy what it brings. ;)

The House of the Dead games are definitely more fun with the Zapper shell than they are with the mouse. I never could justify picking up a good USB lightgun.

This, like DLC and digital distribution, seem like nothing more than ways for companies to circumvent consumer rights. No good can come of this.

Agreed. The only place I've really seen digital distribution done correctly thus far is "Good Old Games". Great prices, better than average games, and no DRM! :)

I use GlovePie to play "Frets on Fire", since it allows for use of my guitar peripherals. Everything else comes off as a novelty. It's honestly hard to justify using the Wiimote over a proper mouse setup on 99% of PC games. You mention Portal. I really cannot even imagine having the proper amount of speed or control while using the Wiimote to adequately play that game.

It might be worth looking into the Dolphin emulator however. ;)

Against it ENTIRELY?? Yes were entitled to used and this doesn't take away form that option but isn't EA and any other publisher for that matter entitled to try to get as much chedda as possible? FACT:If you but a BMW and re-sell it the next buyer can only get maintenance parts from BMW. This way BMW gets some type of money from people that didn't buy from them.

And just like video games, new cars are insanely overpriced with little to no justification.

Both companies are senselessly arrogant. Apple cultists simply drink more of their brand's Kool-Aid.

General Gaming / Re: PSP2 - It's coming and we know it
« on: May 15, 2010, 09:22:19 PM »
Why fork over the cash for the device when I already have it in my roo and it is called the PS2.
This was Nintendo pre-DS. Gameboy was just a handheld monochrome NES. GBA was a handheld SNES sans X and Y. If you take issue with PSP being a handheld PS2, I wonder if you've ever owned any Gameboy iteration in your life. If so, I'm not sure I buy that you won't own a Sony handheld because of its identity. It sounds like you don't like it because it's made by Sony which, of course, you're perfectly entitled to.

The PSP is really just a PS2? The GBA is really just an SNES? I think what these handhelds are missing is true compatibility. Nothing will ever match the brilliance of the Sega Nomad. Being able to simply pop my Genesis cartridges into what was basically an over-sized GameGear and go is still hard to beat.

The top left corner appears to only show the frames per second. 54fps is pretty tolerable for a game like Metroid. Most people tend to prefer a range somewhere between 60-90 for faster first person shooters.

Computing power is certainly not an issue. The only decent one I've come across however was the Dolphin. It claims to be Wii compatible, but I only ever tried it with GameCube games. It's very possible that I've overlooked other options that are out there however.

Consoles are becoming multimedia centers. They'll never become personal computers. They're too locked down for that sort of expansive ability. A lot of people like that in a device though (people that buy Apple products, for example). I like being able to run my own servers and create new, custom levels on a whim. Gaming used to be a lot more entertaining when there were vast, creative communities that formed around certain titles. Now everything is simply pumped out by the developers and then charge for.

That's not to say that consoles don't have their place. I think consoles are loosing their place as they take on more features however. I like my Wii because it offers something that is not easily offered elsewhere. Sure I could hook the Wiimote up to my PC via a simple Bluetooth dongle (and have for Frets on Fire, via the Guitar Hero shell), but that's not really much fun without a working Wii emulator to play my discs with as well. :P

I was unaware there was any idea of console gaming becoming obsolete.  With console versions of games being on par with PC versions these days it seems that console gaming was the future.

Console games only seem to be on par because many of the cross-platform titles are dumbed down for the consoles to begin with. While consoles game can often be highly optimized due to the single hardware configuration, the setups are instantly outdated and underpowered in comparison to even a modest computer.

PC gaming will never go away. Console games continue to gain popularity because developers and publishers like control. They want to be able to destroy the first-sale doctrine. They want to cut out advertised features per their discretion at any time in the future. They want to revoke licenses and ban players for arbitrary reasons. They want to force you to use their own gimped, advert-laden multiplayers servers so that they can ull the plug on them when the yearly sequel comes out. They want to nickel and dime you, charging $15 for a simple map pack. This is why developers like consoles. It offers control.

That's not the future I want.
