General Chat / Re: 'Suck it, Apple." - Judge Colin Birss

What frustrates me is that the abuse of both patents and copyrights by corporations has created an idealogy that these things should not exist which ultimately hurts the little guy.  The small independents writing songs, making movies, writing books, creating games and software - don't they deserve some ability to make a living off that work?  But that won't happen without patents and copyrights and those have become almost dirty words these days.

Copyright law, as is currently stands, is wrong. Take it from someone who actually does make a living off of his artistic endeavors. Rather than laying out the right method, I will instead just link to a previous post. You can find it here.

Patents are a different beast altogether. They should not ever cover a simply concept however. Software patents are dangerous and do nothing but hinder innovation. Of course, it's not too different than companies patenting concepts simply so their competitors can't use it. Unless you have a working prototype and intend to produce and actively market something, you should not be granted a patent.

Maybe the reason they don't want knowledgeable employees is because knowledgeable employees might know enough to try and talk a customer out of a purchase.

Knowledgeable employees are questioning employees. You don't make management by being knowledgeable, and managers certainly don't want to look stupid in comparison to their underlings. Retail outlets in particular are no place for thought or insight. They hate you if you're clever, yet they despise a fool.

They can sell bongs, but you have to say it's for smoking tobacco, and they aren't allowed to tell you where you can buy weed.

And it's borderline illegal to possess said bong, even if it was legally purchased. The second some limp-dicked cop has a hard-on for you, it gets written up as paraphernalia.

I always hated Will Ferrel more.

While I too really hate Ferrel, at least he tries to play a slightly different character in each film. Sandler plays the exact same asshole time and time again.

This is a symptom of our patent system being broken, nothing more.

Exactly, and software patents are among the most ridiculous. The patent system needs reform, and software patents need to be outright abolished.

Oblivion, when you worked at Gamestop did people ask you about hacking consoles? What did you tell them?

People would have to be under the false assumption that GameStop employees are knowledgeable folks. :P

The best thing Sandler ever did was the Wedding Singer, and it was a pretty trite romantic comedy. That says a lot, I think.

Why won't you just accept my friendship already? Do you not want to be friends? :(

Why aren't Americans or westerners in general dying from video games like this?

Americans are fat as ****. They can easily live off of that, without moving their lazy asses, for weeks. ;)

The first Deuce Bigalow was pretty funny, as was The Benchwarmers, and The Animal wasn't too bad.

That statement was much funnier than any film Rob Schneider has ever been in.

Just ordered The Resistance, won't have it until later this week though. It looks to fix all of the problems my group has with Ultimate Werewolf, such as early player elimination, the need for a moderator, and accusations based on nothing more than conjecture. I think that having real, material clues will go a long way. We shall see though.

An SSD is certainly going to be faster than a traditional spinning disc. The hybrid will be almost equally so. Personally, I would opt for a smaller SSD to load up just the OS and some RAM heavy, yet essential programs... like Photoshop. I'd install everything else to a much larger (and cheaper) SATA drive. As for media storage, I'd keep that external for safety's sake.

That said, 5200 is pretty slow by today's standards. You're generally only going to see those speed in storage-centric externals, or cheaper laptops. You can upgrade to a faster platter and probably notice at least a bit of a difference. Also keep in mind that you be seeing bottlenecks elsewhere, and while a faster drive may help, it might not be as glorious as hoped for.

You're supposed to hoard media, not purge it after viewing. Storage is cheap, start organizing. ;)

Stop downloading so much embarrassing pornography... :P

Don't forget that a lot of companies are now going as far as running credit checks on potential employees as well. After all, you're not a true American until you're swimming in debt and desperate to take any meager offering of financial "security". How else would the corporate world ensure financial servitude without resistance? It may not be a big deal at mall outlets and fast food joints, but just about anything beyond is going to frown upon bad credit or even no credit.

Oh, and if you're stupid enough to have any sort of social networking presence listed under you're real name... get rid of it. Create a screen name and operate under a cloak of anonymity, like you should be doing anyway. Lock your profile down completely so that no one can see it from the outside. Or best of all, just don't use social networks at all. Employers, all employers, will do a quick web search on you to find any embarrassing pictures, stories, or even contacts.

Remember that there are always seemingly more qualified people willing to do the same job for less pay. In the current job market, even the smallest thing is enough to get you passed over. Get used to embellishing the truth and overselling yourself if you plan to live at the mercy of others. It's all a game, and it's rigged so that the average person can never win.

Woah woah woah, calm your tits Morari. I wasn't fired for being a bad employee, I was fired because I just wasn't needed anymore. Honestly, I was surprised I lasted this long. I can write a good resume (well, as good as you can without embellishing) but I'm always worried it looks ugly or isn't eye-catching or some ****.

I'm sorry, but simply being unemployed makes you less desirable in the current market. Odd as it may seem, most companies only want proven employees... which means people that are currently employed. Most companies will never check your references. They're legally not even allowed to ask former employers anything beyond "Was so-so employed during this time? Would you hire them again?".

If you resume looks ugly and isn't eye catching then it is not a good resume. It's not about presenting information, it's about creating a feeling. Everything is. Embellishments are essential to that, especially if you want to move up out of the dredges of retail.

193
Can't put together a decent resume and was fired from your last job? Sorry, but you're pretty well fucked in the current job market. Best to just put your own skills to work and sell yourself to individuals instead. Paint their houses, fix their computers, mow their lawns, change their oil, whatever it is you're good at. If you avoid becoming a wage slave now, you'll have a better life later.

Lying is the single most important skill you can learn if you want to make it in the corporate world. Skill means nothing next to a good liar. You just have to learn how far to push it, both before and during an interview. It's something you will come to rely upon once you get the position as well. If people wanted to hear the truth about things, they'd pick up a newspaper now and then.

The US isn't as nutty as the EU is with law, I don't see this happening anywhere else.

Exactly, the US has dozens of corporations making sure that the right laws are passed.

isn't it pride and prejudice and zombies?

It is, you're correct. I was getting it confused with Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters... which was also pretty boring. :P

Perhaps... though I kind of doubt it after becoming bored with the gimmick that was Sense and Sensibility and Zombies. :\
