"Nintendo DSi Software Will Be Region-Locked
Filed under: Interview, News, Nintendo DS — hattrick @ 1:50 pm

Here is a bit of info for all you who are planning on importing a DSi.  It seems that the DSi will not be region locked for basic functions (i.e. DS cartridge games, camera, and internet browser).  However, things such as the DSWare services will be region locked.

“DSi is region locked because DSi embeds net communication functionality within itself, and we are intending to provide net services specifically tailored for each region,” said a statement given to UK consumer website CVG.

The statement reasons that region-locking its upcoming DS hardware upgrade is necessary as the new system will feature parental control features which will be dependent on each region’s unique age limit.

The DSi, however, will be able to play standard Nintendo software from any region, similar to the original Nintendo DS model and the Nintendo DS Lite. Users will also be able to browse the Internet on their DSi from anywhere in the world and exchange photos with friends in other countries."

So suppose I import the DSi, when the system finally gets released here in the states will my imported DSi be able to receive the new features?

I like how nintendo's views on their consoles and handhelds differ completely.  They won't add a harddrive to the wii because it cost more to manufacture and be more expensive retail wise, but they'll redesign the DS every two years and sell it for more.

I don't think there really is a need for a hard drive- the Wii has two USB sockets that aren't being used for anything and in theory any drive could be hooked up and operate just fine if Nintendo allowed it. Why make a device when there are so many around to start with?
What I don't like is that this is the first I've ever heard of a hand held has been region locked (ever?). If the DSi is coded by region to download content from that country's server than importing it would be a waste.

I think it refers to the downloadable apps, right? Because Wii points are region locked as well right?

In the article above this analyst thinks it won't do well in the marketplace.

Agree disagree?Your thoughts.

I think that delaying the release in the US will cause a huge demand for it and Nintendo will be able to sell bundle sets like hot cake. I also agree with Spinzilla- Apple releases new products about twice a year and people lose their minds over them, consumerism is consumerism.

Alright alright- my head is spinning from all the stuff that's been shown yesterday and somewhat a little of today- but spinning nonetheless!
I feel over all the info is great news, but I'm happiest about the Nintendo Club- I hope they send some recognition over to players whoh registered all their crap and got nothing but desktop backgrounds, but I don't expect Nintendo to do anything like that.
I'm most upset about the DSi coming out next month in Japan and here in a year- I just bought a silver DS lite and I would gladly sell it to import the DSi. I read some stuff about it having a region lock, is that true? It could be possible to keep the downloads of DSi points to some sort of minimum so I can see that happening, but is there any official word about it?
I'm for GameCube remakes as long as they're packaged together and priced cheaper than new games. I have Pikmin, but not Pikmin 2- I've tried looking for it and soon gave up so I'm excited to see the series come back and allow people to get familiar with it again.

Tech issues happen all the time, it's too bad about Bonnie's discussion though I would have liked to hear it. Anway Mega Man 2 is the best, for me I like the music the most.

I'm pleased with everything for the most part, I can't wait for the conference over here!

I've played every Wario Land game ever and the WarioWare series was a big let down for me because I missed the side scroller action so much. This is a game I was wishing for a while. I just got it and played a few boards on the first stage and I like it a lot. The music is surprisingly great and making Wario do crazy **** for cash is a great feeling. The shaking is alright, I don't mind it too much. :)

I wouldn't mind a new Kid Icarus, I really want a new F Zero or Pilot Wings. Anyone for Punch Out?

A touch screen menu design based on the Wii would be really cool. I would like to see an expansion of built in apps for the DS. I always hope for a built in browser, but time will only tell.

My guess is some sort of iChat like interface, where you talk to each other on one screen and play games on the other.

You wish- Nintendo has the reputation of telling us of a cool idea and then showing us how they've half assed the execution.

If this seems like a Japanese only release then what are they going to talk about on Thursday? I have a feeling that it might mostly be about a new DS.

I really like the new features, but I don't like the idea of buying another DS (i just got the silver) and I don't like the idea that a true successor would come out in another year because that would create a tier of games I never liked it when Nintendo did it.
I would still want one though. I hope they don't call it the DS Advance.

In the past I've read comments from Nintendo always acknowledging the merge of tools and functions into devices and the word was that they weren't very interested in branching off- this was in relation to a phone by Nintendo. So this seems sort of weird in that this new product would be packed with functions that make it appealing.
I don't know what to really believe, but I have a feeling I should rely on this because NO ON E has mentioned a camera and music playback for functions to a new model DS and if I know Nintendo they will come from the farthest path of left field and spin us on our heads causing people to flip out and debate about all new topics about gaming.
I sure do hope it's legit. I had the Game Boy camera and printer and Nintendo's use of sending game screens via the Wii seems like an intro to a camera and well since everything's got a camera in it already- well, why not?  As for the music play back- Nintendo has really gone far to deter people using home brew methods to make the DS do things it wasn't meant to. Nintendo has a service in Japan that allows info to be transferred over to a SD card that fits into the DS slot. Players are able to download anime and manga- I forget the name of the service. That means they can use the tool in the states to let us store files and I guess listen to whatever we want.
I guess we will find out (hopefully) come Thursday.

Looking at the screens I see a lot of the GBA GTA and that game was awful. While I'm sure that Rockstar is taking this game more seriously I will just wait until footage comes out before I come to a conclusion because I don't want to have memories of playing a game that couldn't be beaten because of a glitch.
My issue of NP still hasn't come yet :/

Can't wait for this sucker to come out!  Kind of strange how its the only Wii/DS piece of software I'm really excited about...

Not at all- Korg makes everything else look like Wii Music.

Any chance of this being at Nintendo's Fall Conference?

I wouldn't think so, but the next issue of Nintendo Power is supposed to have a feature on it.

What they should do is stream it through the Nintendo Channel.

NOA is having their own event too on the same days http://wii.ign.com/articles/911/911159p1.html

All I hope is that it isn't another peripheral or a new colored anything. I want to see something that hasn't been shown off.

I'm hoping for one of the two if not both to be announced:

1. The storage solution will coincide with the SD Card Association's new standard that will let people boot info right from the cards.
2. A new DS system.

I'm sure neither will be mentioned at all, instead a Wii in different colors will show up and people will lose their minds for another year trying to get the best color.

I have yet to listen to it, but Diplodicus has made and released a whole album made with Korg
http://mp3death.us/diplodocus.html
At this year's Extra- Hyper Game Music Event Nobuyoshi Sano and some others are going to perform using Korg
http://www.siliconera.com/2008/09/06/tokyo-hosts-extra-hyper-game-music-event-in-october/

Today on my birthday quest for a silver DS, I stopped by my non corporate game shop for one, but they didn't have it and so I got to talking with them and got them to order two copies for me, I was told that there is no language in the game so playing a Japanese copy would be fine. I haven't heard anything about a US release so ordering from them seemed like the good thing to do. It's nice to see the press that the game is getting though, it could be the best reason to own a DS if at all.

I know of no release date at all, when I asked the guy at my super duper game shop a few months ago he laughed at me and said it would never come to the US, BUT I'm sure it's coming because it's selling like hot cakes in Japan and a release date has been set for the UK. It couldn't come out any sooner in my opinion.

What form will the files be in after you've recorded them?  MP3s?  I suppose it could be any kind of audio file that you want.

All of the files I've dealt with have been mp3, but I'm sure if you can get it onto a smaller format it will be fine. The other thing is that you have to put your file somewhere so people can play it from their computer or download it.
If anyone wants a bunch of custom stages you can check them out here.
