Yeah, it's looking a lot better now -- not as bulky.

I'm glad they decided to keep its original code name. I couldn't amagine it being called anything else. The new design is awesome, more sharper and slick, just like the SP.

indeed, the 'DS' allready has name recognition, which is a plus from a marketing standpoint, and acronyms seem to be all the rage now (top two most selling consoles? PS2 and GBA, real names? nono they fail)
Also it looks damn hot.

Keeping the name was an excellent idea....by now many people idenitfy the system as the DS so changing the name would be inviting confusion.
Now, onto the redesign...
WOW. Im liking the streamlined, more sophisticated look. I didnt have a huge problem with the prototype's look, but Im a helluva lot more happy to see this one.
More importantly however, we have larger more tactile looking D-pad and face buttons (and, apparently, triggers as well). No analog stick, but that concern was secondary to me over having buttons that were just too damn small. And over 140 games in development....outstanding.
The DS's future is starting to look as bright as its shiny new exterior...

I'm a happy boy Nintendo decided to keep the "DS" name, however.......
....I do not like the new design. I prefer the original design we saw at E3. The new design, to me, looks more bulky, too edgy and not as slick. It looks like my opinion is in the minority..........so flame me all you want!
EDIT: but I do like larger face buttons.

They always beat me too it. Why is that?
Though I'm glad we'll still be referring to it as the DS, I don't really understand why...
And it looks very sleek, actuallly...I'm wondering, though, does anyone feel that it's still behind the PSP in the design department? I think they're both top notch, especially with the sexy finish Nintendo's put on it...

I'm not a big tech junkie, and I've always tried to figure with this option on my GameCube, but I hear no difference between stereo and mono...what the hell is teh difference?
Title: RE: New DS Design
Post by: Zach on July 28, 2004, 11:27:07 AM
stereo is 2 speakers, mono is 1, the thing about stereo, is that one speaker can do different stuff than the other, if done right it can make you think a sound came from a certain direction. stereo is pretty much useless with the 2 speakers so close together. The stereo option is great for headphones though.

I'm not an audio junkie, but I do know that mono is a prefix for "one," and hence in audio terms it means "one speaker"...

READY. AIM. FLAAAAAAME!!!!
No, j/k. Actually Im surprised you think its bulkier....its clearly quite a bit more shallow than the prototype unit, and the redesigned top is an improvemet...make for less of a 'brick look', and more importantly, it closes on the screens more securely than with the prototype's. I would like to know its exact length, however....keeping in mind they have enlarged the D-pad and face buttons (thank gawd), the redesign is looking the same length if not a bit shorter....

Actually, if you ask me, that's a pretty nice design. Very similar to what Nintendo already has, but not bad at all.
I'd make a joke of the artistry, but I couldn't make something half that good if my life depended on it.

Post by: StrikerObi on July 28, 2004, 04:24:05 PM
Mono is short of monoraul. Meaning the same sound comes out of all speakers. Stereo has two distinct channels. Surround sound has anywhere between 4 and 7 channels, usually 5 or 6 (front left, front right, front center, back left, back right, subwoofer - or for 5 channel both the back left and back left speakers output the same channel of sound).
Just incase anyway asks 5.1 is not a channel designation, it's a speaker designation. It means 5 speakers and a bass module (subwoofer). a 5.1 system outputs in usually 5 or 6 channels depending on the source.

kurst, that's a nice design and decent drawing.. but you're handwriting sucks. nah, j/k. but get a better eraser..
the thing about the new design is that it looks really sharp and sophisticated now, so it doesn't really look like a toy / gaming platform anymore.. looks like a cross between a "game and watch" and shiny toaster/grill.. it looks like it should be more expensive now too.. hope that won't be the case of course..
/crazy on. did someone say monorail? ... "is there a chance the track could bend?" "not a chance, my hindu friend." "i've heard these things are awfully loud." "it glides as softly as cloud." "the ring came off this pudding can." "use my pen knife, my good man." mono.. oh wait. nevermind. /crazy off.

well unfortunately looks of a system are becoming too big of an issue. If nintedo really wants the ds to compete, they need to pimp it up a little bit, and they have done a great job of that

I meant bulkier in terms of look, not actual size. Also, I said I like the fact they enlarged the buttons. Looking at the new design again, it's not terrible (far from it). The base where the d-pad, face buttons and touch screen look okay, but I really don't like the design of the flip-top cover. Too curved and when closed, it makes it look bulky.
I'll stop my bitchin'. The desigin won't stop me from buying one. And my eyes are fine, thank you very much!

I see Nintendo's pushing that whole "we MADE it, so our name deserves to be in the title" deal again.
"Nintendo DS" "Nintendo GAMECUBE"
This is in contrast to other simple brand name presentations like "Game Boy Advance" or "Game Boy" (not "Nintendo Game Boy Advance I'll kill you to death with such a long name"), "PS2," and "Xbox."

Looks like that post was deleted....and for good cause. It aint fair to call people "Stupid" based on their personal observations or opinions.
If they ask questions about what "mono" means, thats a different matter. No, Im j/k.
About the dimensions guys, definitely check out the thread entitled...um, "Dimensions"....a forum user had a really great observation that makes the DS seemingly not much thicker than our beloved SPs....

The Nintendo DS´ new sleek design is so good, that it will quite rapidly land the little handheld wonder at the top of the sales worldwide for handhelds, leaving the Sony PSP eating dirt by the roadside! I don´t hate Sony, mind, but Nintendo´s the King of videogaming, so they belong at the top!
Sony may claim to have made it cool to play games (actually it was SEGA with Sonic who originally made gaming cool in the eyes of people in the beginning of the Nineties, according to EDGE Magazine), but Nintendo makes it cool to own and show off a gameconsole, in particular their handheld ones! I am going to be so proud of my little NDS and it supercool touchscreen!
