Title: EBgames "don't open ToS right away"
Post by: Mazgazine1 on July 13, 2004, 11:57:17 AM
I had this very weired encounter with a local Ebgames employee today..

I was asking about exactly when Tales of Symphonia was coming out. (I had pre-ordered it and forgot exactly which day it was coming out, to bad its the 14! and not today).

The EBgames person said that "I should not open my copy right away"
This person started telling me that there is something going on the with the current shipment.  She also asked me if I was a collector..

So, feeling bugged about it, I called a second EBgames, and they said there was enough to cover current pre-orders (from last week at the latest), and there would be no copies on the shelf.  There wasn't going to be anything exactly "wrong" with the game.

After consulting a few friends on the matter, maybe the person at the first EB was talking about, selling my copy of the game when I get it?

Now I'm wondering what should I do? I REALLY REALLY wanted this game... But, how much would it be worth to YOU, if you were going to sell it. and wait for the second shipment?
And also, wouldn't this be considered game scalping?

P.S. I'm definitely not going to sell my copy, I'm just seeing if there are some rumors.. I mean it was kinda freaky, I've never bought and game and been TOLD not to play it right away.

Sounds like there might be a limited edition cover or a typo or something that needs to be corrected that will make the first run copies valuable.  It shouldn't matter if you're not going to sell it though.  If you want to play just play it.  Even if your copy becomes a highly sought after collector's item having it opened isn't going to totally kill it's value.  Odds are if it was only the first run it would be so obscure that few would be willing to give you serious money for it anyway.

Another possibility is if the game becomes quickly cancelled for some reason (that would SUCK) or not enough copies have been made for the initial demand (but possibly with more on the way) but then I would still open the game to play it.  In that case an open case would make no difference in the value since just playing the game would be a big deal.

This is however the first I've heard of anything like this.

It's not illegal to sell your own property.

Anyway, this news distresses me- why does it seem like companies can never ship enough copies to fill demand? Good thing I preordered.

I hope my copy gets here...

Yeah, You'd think that nearly all GC owners would WANT this game..  Its a true RPG , and all reviews are stellar... It bugs me alot when game companies don't think there is demand..

If you've read the IGN review of ToS, they talk about the first and second episodes being only in japan, because they feared failiure in the US.

But, its namco.. Which brings out some high quality stuff...  Sometimes, I just wish Japanese, and American/European markets were not seperated..

I'd actually prefer sub-titled English version, rather then a dubbed version of ANY game anyday.. (thats just my person prefrence of course).. Heck! it would be alot cheaper too!

Yeah i went to Ebgames today too and found its coming out tommorow.  The Eb guy said "Lately it seems like the rpg freaks are coming out for this one".  I wouldn't be surprised if the game's supply is lower than its demand.

Strange story. Maybe she was just trying to freak you out. We in the retail industry like the sick thrill of freaking out customers once in a while

I just hope my copy gets here okay, as well as the art book.

The EB staff must of spilt coffee on their initial supply.

"Oh Larry, that new Gaming Cube game is in, the tosser one"
"GIVE ME A LOOK?"
"Oh Larry you 'tard, you spilt coffee all over them! Now what are we to do?"
"MAKE UP A STORY ABOUT IT BEING RARE OF COURSE"
"I thought Microsoft bought Rare out?"
"... WHAT? BUT I WAS PLAYING JET PAC THE OTHER DAY"

Quite sad, my copy was delayed for two days--sad thing is I was planning on taking today off to get a few hours in (and among other stuff).

My EB games told me they have an extremely limited amount coming (they ordered 80 yet only 20 will be delievered this week).
So yeah, if you didn't pre-order you might want to check stores like Walmart.

I'm thinking about adding a few capsule toys to my order from Lik-Sang, they have many sets, one being Guilty Gear X and including Bridget (yes I'm only writing this to get Bill mad...).

wow this blows i went to ebgames and they didnt get their shipment in, i waited 2 hours (checking every 30min), and the guy finally calls some other ebgames stores in the area and said that seems like nobody has em.

Gamestop and Babages got like 10 a piece but i have it reserved at ebgames online so if i cancel i am charged $5 for shipping and i won't get any bonus items with the game!

The Eb guy told me "if you see the UPS guy kick his ass for me cause you are like the 10th guy to talk to me about this".

Officially pissed off now, cause i have no time to play this game untill next week, thats if i can get my game first!!!!!!!!!

I was just wondering if anyone else got the art book with their pre-order?

My EB Games told me they only got 2 of them in with the shipment of games today.  In addition to that, they didn't even call me about my pre-order!  So I missed out on getting the art book, because I figured they wouldn't get the game till later today or something.  Unbelievable.

I pre-ordered mine from EBgames.com, but I haven't gotten a shipping confirmation yet, nor has my credit card been charged. I'd better get that book, it's the main reason I pre-ordered. If not I'll more than likely be paying some inflated price on eBay...

EDIT: I logged on to EBgames.com and found it was shipped yesterday. I wonder why they didn't send me a shipping confirmation?

Yes, I got both the art book and the poster at the same time I preordered it at Gamestop.  This was about two weeks ago.  I also just picked up the game a few hours ago, but have yet to play it.

Maybe it's such a limited release thay they're thinking it might end up like Skies? Demand seems to be pretty high, though. If Viewtiful Joe was any indication, that meansd we'll get te sequel, too.

weird question time, I'm trying to figure out when my store will be getting the game and I need the dumb upc code...  Can anyone give me the numbers of the upc code including the number on either side of the bars?  A scan would probably be easiest.

if by UPC you mean the barcode, here's the one on my copy:

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| 00100
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| |||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| |||||||||||
7||22674 || 30002|| 5

Like my skills?

I have a bad feeling its going to end up taking a lot longer to get to me than it should.  Thats the price i have to pay for being greedy and getting it for free I suppose...

Maybe namco will surprise me and for some reason pay for overnight shipping. @_@  (Yeah, right?)

How about a ToS tale of woe?  My bro pre-ordered it from EB, as he usually does.  And the pre-order bonus was a weird look from the clerk when asking about those special, special prizes that others seem to be getting.  Man I hate living in the damn sticks.

Edit: Oh and what I think of Tales?  It is truly a treat.  I wish this, along with Mario and Luigi and Megaman Battle Network, was the standard of the genre, instead of those blasted push-button movies some developers pump out.   I find myself looking forward to fights instead of dreading their existance.  Good show, Namco.

I preordered my copy like on May 13, 2003.  It has been shipped already and I will get it today, it is on the FedEx truck as I type on its way to me.  I got free two day shipping so it actually shipped on the 13th.

I got the free art book yesterday, why it came in a seperate shipment I don't know.  It's rather neat, lots of good drawings.

Both EBgames.com and Gamestop.com have gotten very bad about sending confirmation about shipping.  I usually get my order before I get an email shipping confirmation.

I think i might do what someone else mentioned, I want the game so badly...
I'll just go buy a new copy from a store, then when namco sends me one, i'll sell that version...  It'll end up costing a bit more, but at least i'll get the game sooner...
Title: RE: EBgames "don't open ToS right away"
Post by: Ian Sane on July 15, 2004, 07:10:17 AM
I didn't pre-order so I guess I'm not getting the artbook but I don't really care.  Since few who did pre-order are getting the artbook I might as well not tie myself down to EB (the only store in my area that pre-orders) and get pissed off when I get screwed out of pre-order bonus.  I'm going to hunt around the stores today after work and hope that I'll find it.  I never have to pre-order in my area to secure a copy.  If I don't find it it means the stores don't have it yet.  It's nice living in an area big enough to get lots of copies in on release day but small enough that they don't all sell out.

Are there voice acting in all dialogues ? I'm starting to think my copy might be a dud as it seems like voice actings were inserted randomly in some of the dialogues only.

I pre-order with either EBGames.com  or Gamestop.com and I think 100% of the time if a pre-order bonus is made available after I have already placed my order, it gets applied to my order, so I get the bonus.  Unless it's free shipping, they won't give you that unless it's availabe at the time the order is made.  I have cancelled several orders only to preorder the game again to get free shipping.

I got my artbook.  I almost happy.

WHERE THE FORK IS MY LITHOGRAPH!?

~~~~~
I've played this game for 2 hours coming-to-grips with the combat system.  I love it.  I haven't even entered the *place where Collete/Colette/CallCollect is supposed to go in the beginning* yet.  I just run the little tract of field between the town and the *place* running into generic slime and beast blobs and getting used to battles.  IT'S FUN.
I wouldn't really call it a lithograph.
It's a crappy piece of cardboard that measures about 8x14.
The one I got had a whole bunch of scratches on it, but I never saw it in the store when I got it.  And to reiterate from my last post, I didn't get the art book either.  So I was screwed out of one pre-order "bonus" and got a crappy one for the other.
Heh I got basically the same problem. I phoned EB and asked if they had any in(I know, I should of pre-ordered but I didn't think the following would happen) and they me that they got only so many copies to give to all the EB stores and the particular one I was at got 5 copies. So, they were all gone. And the guy said that all the other stores like futureshop is probably sold out too. And then he said(this is when I freaked) that they will probably not be getting anymore copies in because its a limited game!! NOW IM GOING KRAZY! I WANT TOS SO BAD!!
you NEEED to understand that ebgames employees job title is "bull sh_t artist"  Don't believe a thing you hear from any of them!!  I remember back when the cube launched and they were talking me into buying an x-box by saying that the only games that would be available on the gamecube until after christmas were luigi and monkey ball.  That is when I demanded my pre order money back and told everyone in the store that the place is run by morons.  Since then I've heard nothing but lies.  Do you honestly think that Namco thought it would be a good idea to make a great rpg on a system that has next to none, and then only release about 250,000 copies in all of north america and then stop releasing anymore?  BULLSH_T!  Its just eb trying to come up with a good reason why they only got 5 of them......
God I hate that store.  Thats why I bought my lovely copy from the nice people at Toys R Us.
Title: RE: EBgames "don't open ToS right away"
Post by: matt oz on July 16, 2004, 08:47:19 PM
I love Toys R Us.  I almost exclusively buy my games there, unless there's a pre-order bonus at another store.  And there's always a bunch of games on sale that I wasn't aware of.
To stay on topic, I e-mailed EBGames.com and tales@namco.com to see if I could get the book being that I pre-ordered the game (and up to this point, am not exactly thrilled with the game itself).  No answer after yet after 48+ hours.  Ouch.
I got my copy in the mail yesterday, complete with art book and "lithograph" (which really is just a picture printed on cardboard. I was hoping for something along the lines of the Soul Calibur 2 litho). I've had little time to play the game, but what I've played so far ain't half bad. I'm sure I'll enjoy it better once I have more time and I actually figure out what I'm doing!
I've read the thread and I must at this time do something that I never thought I would ever do....defend EB.  Yes, you read that right. Defend EB.  Its probably just my good fortune, but the EB I go to kicks a lot of @$$.  The manager is more knowledgeable than me AND is female.  Thats just downright strange.  Anyway, UPS (read: b@$t@rds) screwed up the pre-order bonus (artbook) but the game came in on time.  EB was very good about calling me and I picked up my game after work and went in the next day and got my artbook.  The game rocks!  Some camera angle/zoom problems on the overworld, and yes, the voice acting sometimes is there and sometimes isn't but it is generally of good quality when it is there.  It gets quite complicated after you can begin using the unison attack and ex-skills, how important these things are to the game, I dont know yet.  I'm about 18 hours in to it, but im taking my time.
I seriously don't know why people get so steamed about EB. It's a shop, they sell games. Who CARES about the staff? You go in, and you buy GAMES. You're not there to have a tea party with the store manager. Though if you were, that'd be cool. If the staff don't know crap all, then don't listen to them.
"I'd like a copy of Tales on GameCube, thanks"
"Oh but I think that's only on Xbox, you should buy an Xbox"
"I'd like a copy of Tales on GameCube, thanks"
".... Oh. That'll be (INSERT MONEY AMOUNT HERE)"
The end.
In case anyone cares I found a copy at Toys 'R' Us on Monday and finally got round to playing it last night.  I'm not very far but I like what I've played.  The battle system is really cool.  It's not perfect but it's something different and unlike most attempts to make a new battle system it doesn't play like crap.  The fact that my brother and I can play through the whole game together really adds to it.  We normally don't have enough time for us both to beat an RPG so beating it together should solve that problem.
Well the battle system isn't exactly new because Tales of Phantasia (SNES) uses a similar battle system.  The multiplayer is a blast though.  My two bros and I are playing hard mode and the fact that we have a common enemy has brought us closer than we've been in a long time.
Wait.  In the US is it actually called "EB"?  It's Electronics Boutique here in Canada too.  I just always write EB because it's an easy abbreviation that everyone knows.
It was known as "Electronics Boutique" in the U.S. up until the current-gen.  They quickly cut things down to "EB Games" everywhere here.
Here ingermany it's EB Games. Though that might not be the rule, I have only seen one of them so far and Media Markt still beats them when it comes to prices. Shouldn't a games store give you a reason to buy there instead of a general electronics store? I don't see EB doing that.
