Title: Blender's 50 Worst Songs Of All Time (not pretty)
Post by: mouse_clicker on June 03, 2004, 11:46:45 AM
I was curious, so I checked out Bender's 50 Worst Songs of All Time article- what I saw was more horrible than anything you could possibly imagine. While I do agree with many of their choices, the rest only go to show how much the music industry has declined, so much so that it's at the point where it doesn't even know what good music is anymore.
#41 is We Didn't Start The Fire by Billy Joel
#26 is The End by The Doors
#1 is We Built This City by Starship
#12 is Kokomo by The Beach Boys
Those 4 pissed me off enough, but these two made me feel like I had just been mugged and left beaten in a dark alley:
#48 is Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da by The Beatles (as if I really need to say that)
#42 is The Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel
We'll just ignore Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da for now, since any Beatles song being on a list of the worst songs ever is nothing less than blasphemy. But The Sounds of Silence is one of the most beautiful and thoughtful songs ever written, rivaled, on the whole, only by Simon and Garfunkel's other work. How could it possibly be one of the worst songs ever? Go to the link if you want to read their pretentious and hypocritical explanations, but I'd warn against it.
How can Blender think they can claim they're the "Ultime Music Magazine" while at the same even suggesting a Beatles song is bad? It just doesn't make sense.

Sounds like they just want controversy. I usually just stop reading when I see something that strikes me that way.

The top 50 worst most definitely belongs to the past 10 years...Actually, I could go to say that the top 5000 worst belong to the past 10 years...

I love Kokomo. I love the Beach Boys. <3 That "Sounds of Summer" collection is awesome.
And kind of agree with Bill on the top 50, but the top 5000? =P There were alot of bad oldies, too. =p

They are only thought of as bad because they don't sit well in the current market. Probably the bad hairstyles.

That kind of underlined my opinion of this generation's music... =\

I remember seeing this a while ago and being pissed off. Here's what I would not have included on the list due to either being a really great song or a silly song that's still fun as a pop tune. If I haven't heard it I won't include it.
RIGHT SAID FRED “I’m Too Sexy” MEAT LOAF "I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” SIMON & GARFUNKEL “The Sounds of Silence” R.E.M. “Shiny Happy People” (how can ANY R.E.M. song make this list?) DEEP BLUE SOMETHING “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” EUROPE “The Final Countdown” THE DOORS “The End” COREY HART “Sunglasses At Night” SPIN DOCTORS “Two Princes” THE BEACH BOYS “Kokomo” BOBBY McFERRIN “Don’t Worry Be Happy” HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS “The Heart Of Rock & Roll” STARSHIP “We Built This City” (worst ever? This is classic 80s pop rock)
Now most of those are pop songs and although I'm not a huge pop fan really good catchy pop is great to listen to. And if you're going to rag on Kokomo than rag on EVERY Beach Boy song because all of their songs were cheesy surfer tunes. That's what made them GREAT. Rag on pop songs that are not catchy and are only popular because of hype and promotion (Britney Spears). If it's catchy it's a worthwhile pop tune.
Songs of Silence though is by far the oddest inclusion since it's a very arty poetic song. It's the sort of song that people who reject pop music like.

Jesus, a lot of those entries are GOOD songs O__o
I have to agree that they just wanna stir up controversy though.

The worst song made, ever, EVER, is the one Ja Rule and Metallica did. I can prove this on an abacus.
I checked the list and was very offended that it wasn't listed.

I'd say the worst song I've ever heard is Come Sail Away by Styxx. That song is just so cheesy and lame and goofy and takes itself way too seriously. Hell you could use that description for any Styxx song. Plus the lead singer has the most sissy voice I've ever heard.
Edit: To add to the annoyance the reasoning for "From a Distance" being included can basically be summed up as "I don't believe in God so this song is stupid". I guess that's an okay reason to personally dislike a song but it's as unprofessional as a critic bashing Star Wars because he doesn't believe in the Force.
In fact a lot of these seem to be included entirely because of their lyric content. Doesn't the quality of the music itself have any merit? I would consider damning a song entirely because of it's lyrics as idiotic as daming a game because of it's story. Is this worst songs of all time or worst poems?

I completely agree- the first thing I look for in music is the musical quality itself. Lyrics play second fiddle to the actual music, which means even if the lyrics are good, but the music itself is bad, I probably won't like it. But if the music is good, despite the lyrics being bad, I probably will like it. Obviously if both are good I like it even more.

Once again, I feel inclined to inform people who have "figured out" what the "worst <subject> of all time" are that they, in fact, have no idea what what bad examples of that subject are.
Take for instance... Captain Sensible's "Wot." Listen for a minute or so and see if your cerebrum doesn't implode. Repetitive, stupid crap.
Or how about Macho Man Randy Savage's album "Be a Man." Is that better than Kokomo?
Such attention seeking behavior.

If it was lyrics, then what were they complaining about The Sounds of Silence for? I love the lyrics of that song, I guess they were to though provoking or something for the person who decided to add the song to the list.

Heh heh. That at least is pretty funny for about 30 seconds or so. I urge everyone to listen to the album's song samples on Amazon for a good chuckle. Just don't buy the album. Laughably bad music is like alcohol. In little bits it's a lot of fun but too much can ruin your life.

True. STYXX does in fact kick ass.
I wouldnt put many of those songs on the list. I would however put any American Idol/Backstreet Boy garbage, and any clones of them, on the list. I mean every song on the radio today, basically.

I agree with Mouse_Clicker in wondering how The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel made the list at all when there are so many incredibly bad songs to put in their place.
Another one that I don't get is Ebony and Ivory. Not a huge fan of the song myself, but there are some Paul McCartney songs out there that would have been a better choice. Jet or So Bad perhaps?

"#41 is We Didn't Start The Fire by Billy Joel"
Well, I am a big fan of this song, but considering Billy Joel said himself that he didn't really like the song I guess I can understand why it is on the list.

Yeah, I heard about this a few weeks ago, and I thought it was ridiculous. You could never really do a worst of list unless you did it on the radio because nobody would know what you were talking about.
I worked in radio for several years. I know what bad music is because people would send it to us to try to get it on the air.
Pretty much all of the songs on their list were hit songs at one point, and I can't see how they could ever be considered the worst 50. I agree that it's just to get them attention, publicity, and controversy.

What is this? I mean they managed to list 50 songs as the worst of all time yet couldn't find room for that awful Milkshake song that came out this year. What the hell! They called "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" bland? They obviously have never heard anything by radiohead, the epitome of blandness.

I like We Didn't Start The Fire, but most of the others I'm pretty neutral about.
It seems to me that they were picking songs that were popular at one time, that some people like, but that they hate for one reason or another. It's not necessarily based on sheer horribleness.
I saw the show on VH1 (Blender and VH1 cooperated) and the list was different, as I recall. The Beatles weren't on it, I believe, though I'm not positive, and the ones that are on there were in very different order (I'm Too Sexy was more like number 11 than 49). The show was better, in my opinion, and funnier because of the commentary.
And I like Styx, though I certainly prefer Suite Madame Blue to Sail Away. And that awesome idea for a flash animation of Mr. Roboto. My friend already made one, but he and I collaborated in thinking of another idea.

Come guys. I can't believe no one has said this. The worst song of all time has to be, drumroll please,........"Must be the Money" by Deion Sanders. I mean my brother downloaded it for laughs and when he started playing the song I couldn't believe that was the real song. It was SOOO bad I thought it was parody. It was funny at first....but then you realize this was supposed to be music.

All really good tunes on that list. First off.. Styx.. RULES! You listen to the CD, and you get a good laugh through it. You get to Mr. Roboto and Renegade, and those are the tunes of Styx. Like I said though, a lot of their CD is a joke to me, but I still like a certain amount of their songs, and for that they get my credit. I thought Shaq trying to make a rap CD was horrible. It seems like they stuck to a certain generation and style of music to choose from. They have to be tryin to get attention or something. Not many people I know HATE these songs, and a lot love them. I'm a fan of older Hip-Hop, but a lot of rap that comes out is just crap. Then again, if they added rap to the list, they would definatly need to widen it from 50 to 500 worst songs. I love my old school Hip-Hop though. Nothing beats the CLASSICS though, like some or most they listed. It's kind of like they took the 50 most popular songs that all the generations have all heard, and put it into whats worse than the other. When they are all good songs, and you put it in terms of one worse than the other, they are all still good. Thinking they are just attention grabbers with the headline of 50 worst. I don't think thats what they were tryin to get at, but I like to tell myself that.
