Title: "Whats all the hype about?"... The Harry Potter 3 Review Thread
Post by: Oldskool on June 03, 2004, 08:45:24 AM
Well, I saw it last night. (Sneak Preview showings at the cinema.)

By the way, that quote was from someone I heard as I entered the cinema.

I've read all 5 books, though I'm no Potter fanatic. Thus, I understand why a lot of changes were made. While the first 2 movies tried to be visual versions of the book that were cut to 2.5 hours, POA instead is an adaption BASED on the book. Because of this, it is a better film.

I ain't gonna spoil anything, so no major details. The (in my opinion) superior directing is not noticed right away, but you eventually notice things are a lot less "by the book" (literaly)  and convential. Lots of clever shots, scenes, and even a few blink-and-you-miss-it gags.

The castle looked more like a medievil castle, rather than a pristine disneyland castle. (I know about castles, living in Scotland.) The "darker" feeling gives the film a more tense feel. The CGI is still as extravigant as in the first 2 movies, but its put to better use. The dementors were well done, as was Buckbeak the Hippogriff.

The acting was good all around, with Alan Rickman as Snape once again shining. Lupin, although not quite how I imagined him, was excellent. Kudos to Gary Oldman as Sirius Black. The kids are good, especially Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

This is my fave John Williams score in a long time. I felt in the first two movies his music didn't match the scenes. Here however, the score matches what you're watching excellently. Which, after all, is the point of movie soundtracks.

I had a few gripes. Many subplots were completely taken out, notibly the Hogwarts Quiddich Cup. Those who haven't read the book may have difficulty following certain parts of the plot.

Overall, this is an excellent movie. AND I SAW IT BEFORE MOST OF YOU...

heh heh

Overall, this is a superior movie

The above statement makes no sense whatsoever.

Well I was hoping that this movie would be good, so far I've only heard good things about it so looks like I'll be heading off to see it.

I'm sorry, but it blew.  I haven't read the books since the first one, but the plot was utterly simple to me, and the acting, well it was acting, not much more to say good about it. I just have a different taste I guess, and ya, that's all I really have to say.

I was talking to a friend who had seen it and her biggest gripe for some reason was the Dementors flying, she was so pissed that they flew.
She also said that it was very disappointing and was not very true to the book, which I think they would have to.  I
can't believe they dont have the Quidditch playoff things, I mean isnt this the first year Gryffindor wins the Cup?  Another thing, she said that they didn't have the match when Draco and crew dress up as Dementors and scare the bejesus out Harry.  I probably wont see it, I didnt bother with the second one, and I dont think Ill bother with this one.

What makes me really mad is how the directors always seem to have to change things from the book or adding things that weren't even part of the book. Harry Potter is an excellent book and I hate seeing them changing things. They seem to cut a lot out. They didn't even say how Harry's dad was an animagus and how he could turn into a stag or how Professor Lupin knew how to work the Maurderer's Map. Oh yeah and Wormtail, crap I'm not going to be able to sleep at night anymore! He's so freakn ugly!

Loosin up, man! I read and liked the Harry Potter books, but I can bear to see slight changes to things. Who the wants a visual version of the book, anyway? I'd prefer an actual movie.

I loved it.  I just think it gets old when someone goes whiny "Oh the book was better."  Its so damn old and I'm always like "DUR!"  I don't watch to a movie thinking about comparisons to history, books, originals, games, shows, etc.  I simply watch movies for my entertainment.  Also since when has there ever been a movie based on a book that was better?  I also love the books too but again I'm no whiny bastard.

Heh. I never really got down with Harry Potter to much. I think it's funny the Perm said the Shinning. I think it was better than the book (From the half or so that I read) though I can't faily judge two things until I've fully read the Shinning. I just thought it was funny becuase under the Steven King Thread people have been talking bout The Shinning. I was always a Lord of the Rings fan. Those books are amazing. In the back of my head, I always thought Harry Potter was a kid's version of Lord of the Rings. I never really fully beleived this, becuase they do have their major differences, I just like to tell myself that. =)
