Title: Other systems mini E3 impressions
Post by: S-U-P-E-R on May 22, 2004, 12:10:43 AM
Here are a handfull of mini-impressions of some other games I was interested in at E3. Ask me if you want me to expand on any particulars, or any others I may have forgotten (maybe someone else can help fill in).
MK Deception - I thought it would be a rehash of Deadly Alliance, but it totally blew me away, it was so awesome. Movement feels so much better, and the stage fatalities didn't make it a retarded version of BIOFREAKS. Chess was okay, the Konquest looks extra awesome, it's a free-roving adventure where you meet lots of other MK characters (I think I heard a rep say something like ALL OF THEM or 40+ or something). The puzzle mode was fun and funny, and while a clear ripoff of SPF2T, wasn't quite as filled with random dumb-long comboing nonsense.
Rumble Rose - The control was a lot better and a lot more fluid than the weekly THQ mangrapplers, and also it had mud wrestling and boobies. I might buy it.
Gradius V - Good ol' Gradius, hopped it with some AWESOME graphical effects and simultaneous co-op! Hot!
DDR Ultramix 2 & DDR Extreme - Ultramix2 didn't drop frames (unlike the first one), had a really cool interface (unlike the first one) and had an ultra hot stripper-tastic version of Emi. DDR Extreme had "Move Your Feet" by Junior Senior, WITH the music video. Get that music video off kazaa RIGHT NOW if you haven't seen it (blol).
Guilty Gear Isuka - FOUR PLAYER GUILTY GEAR HOEDOWN Switching between the foreground and background works out really well, as does manually switching sides (although it takes a little practice).
That game with Nina from Tekken - Some funny but workable controls - attack in any direction by pointing the right stick in that direction. A few different weapons, and playing sniper. The non-combat parts seemed just like Resident Evil, with the documents and items and all that.
Taiko Drum Master - SUPA KAWAII ANIMU DRUM HITTING GAMU! ^___^ SONG LISTO IS NOT COMPRETO, but it had Brave Sword, Braver Soul from SC2, which fit perfectly.

I didn't see Reptile while I played, so I don't know. I didn't see toasty either.

Also, KOF Maximum Impact is 3D, but it plays like 2D! Fun!

I think GG Isuka is still in beta in arcades, right? There's at least a couple of U.S. locations, I hear.
Anyway, for the uninitiated, Isuka uses two 'tracks' - a foreground and background, like the old Fatal Fury games. Also, since it's possible to have guys on either side of you, changing the direction you're facing is done manually. (Direction switch is done with R1. Dust button is now R2 by default. To switch tracks, hit HS+R1. I have no idea what the arcade layout is.) Also, instant kills are gone, I do believe. There's a handy arrow under your lifebar that tells you which way you're facing (and team color if applicable), in case you're getting kicked around and can't tell, or something. You block stuff from behind you by holding 'back' relative to the way you're facing.
All of the 'main' characters from GGXX were selectable, and I don't know who else is in store, other than the big goofy boss. (Kliff, Testament, any new guys, who knows?)
Other highlights include team play (you can kick your partner around but it doesn't do any damage) and some pretty cool backgrounds, like a Jellyfish Pirate beach party.

Thanks I didn't even know about that game until I saw the sexy screenshots Another question, I was wondering if MK will have online stat tracking and/or a worldwide leaderboard. And if so will it include the other modes as well, particularly the puzzle and chess modes. Is Konquest strictly single player or will it incorporate online functionality?

I'm pretty sure Konquest is strictly single-player. I have no idea about the other stuff.

I hope you'll be able to meet the Toasty guy in the Konquest mode. Also, it's nice to see they've finally got some arenas that let you smash eachother off ledges and do hilarious rolls down to the next level.
I NEED MK: D AND MIDWAY ARCADE TREASURES 2 NOW, NOT LATER MIDWAY GRR ANGST.

Eh in my opinion MK is so 10 years ago! Tekken, Virtua Fighter, and even DOA are better along with SNK and Street Fighter. That whole gimmick of over the top fatalities is so lame now since lots of games have blood and violence. It got so much attention because it was really the first major game to have a lot of gore. Oh yea I forgot, Soul Calibur 1 and 2 are better than MK series.

Sure enough, but MK:D is actually good, it seems like. (And MK is still better than DOA, blol)
It seemed to me that it was trying to borrow a lot more from Soul Calibur, it definitely had an improved free-moving system over MK:DA.

Eh this is all opinion based but I like DOA better although DOA 3 had no depth to it at all and was merely a showcase of the XBox's potential at launch.
