Title: Best Way to Control Touch Screen
Post by: GreyPlague on May 14, 2004, 05:47:55 PM
Hey all,
This just kinda hit me a minute ago, but I think its a great idea on what to use to manipulate the touch screen on the NDS instead of using a stylus. Basically, there are going to be games where you are going to want to switch between using your right hand (assuming right hand dominance) from using the buttons (AB XY) to manipulating the touch screen, so that means you are going to have to pick up the stylus and orient it in your hand before using it. My idea is that you put something on your index finger resembling a thimble but with about an inch of stylus attached to it and wear it while you play normally. This eliminates fumbling around for a stylus and is always ready to go. Cheap, and probably pretty easy to make. Give me some feedback on this and let me know what you think.

I have a feeling that games will be either stylus only, or buttons only. Switching between the two would be pretty silly. If their are games that use both, it will probably be in a way that doesn't require fast switching between the two.

WarioWare will use both, I bet.

Miyamoto said he likes the feel of playing Wario Ware with a cotton swab.

GreyPlague that is exactly what me and my cousing were talking about the other night. I want to be able to hold the controler with both hands and switch imediatly between the touch screen and the face buttons. Also I like being able to use the right shoulder button.
The problem though is that using the face buttons will then become difficult because you have a piece of plastic around your thumb.

Play with chopsticks! I don't think they'll expect you to change between both modes of control, eeven if they need additional buttons for selection etc., they put it into a GUI.
BTW, wasn't this guy called GrAyLaN?

Maybe, if your hand is big enough you can use your thumb to press the touch screen while keeping like a finger on the buttons. This all obviously depends on the game, and i doubt developers would want to make playing games a hand exercise.

The one game I'm suprised we didn't see was a wars or fire emblem title. Its obvious with Metroid Prime that part of what they want to do with a touch screen is simulate a mouse...and a slow paced RTS game could really take advantage of that.
