Title: Tales of Symphonia Help!

I'm on disc one, in this Palma Costa fortress in the woods. I've learned to use the radar thing with the ring and have picked up a few items (cards and such) and rescued some prisoners. Now I'm stuck though. I can't exit or walk up the stairs at one place as Loyd mentions this Magunis or something and turns around. I've tried the teleports but they only lead me to a place with a green, transparent spiral where a single enemy and an item is. What should I do?
