By the way, when I say that we'll be adding more prizes, I'm not kidding. There is some awesome stuff coming, I just don't have full confirmation on it yet, so I didn't want to include it and then something happen and couldn't give it away. More prizes will probably added tomorrow, and some of it is awesome stuff.
Also, I will try to post some pictures of the current prizes tonight.

Quote You can’t sue us for taking part in our contest.....
hahahahahahahah Louie the cat will poop on you! =O
Anyway, I don't really like the contest. =\ The main reason is because I have absoultely no idea what I would do, but I'm sure someone could come up with something creative. But do you realize how many people can even do this? Not many (unless they all decide to do GIFs or flash [Perm's gonna win]). First, you'd need a digital camcorder or an analog camcorder and a capture card. Then, you probably need some form of editing software. Then, you need to be able to convert the files into different formats. And THEN, you'd need ample webspace to put it on, and most free ones won't allow it or don't have enough room (or bandwidth). You could use an FTP, but not many people have knowlege of how to set up one, or have a router and don't know their IP address (me =P)
If you can do all of this, than good luck. or if I'm missing something and this is a whole lot easier than I make it out to be, then please tell me. =p

We do not really expect people to shoot live footage for this contest, although there were certainly plenty of them last year. For an online ad like this, the easiest formats to use would be Flash for animated GIF. Those were originally the only formats accepted, but Ryan convinced me to allow other formats because he can convert them around and drop them into a Flash movie, which lets pretty much anyone watch them.

I have updated the contest page with more links to this thread, as well as a note clarifying that you may use animation and/or live-action footage. However, I think animation will be more tasteful in most instances, if you are planning to make this look professional. If you want it to be silly, live-action could be useful. Either strategy is valid.

Do you want this to be fully original? or can we take Nintendo art? Also, is using other, lets say trademarks, illegal? Like say, if we were going to bash said trademarks?

Flash animation raelly isn't my forte, as it is for say....Perm. Live action would be the only way to go for me. But compression is the obvious downside, so probably a 30second to 1minute thing would be ok right?
While winning this thing would be ABSOLUTELY F**KING AWESOME, I'm merely going to use this for camera-directing and script-writing experience, since this is basically what I'm doing in Uni right now.
But MY GOD! How cool is this contest! (If this was what happened last year, I didn't know about it ) BUT WOW!
Oh, and like Pale said, would we be able to use footage/images from Nintendo games? And with the Copy of MGS:TTS, if say, someone in a PAL region won it (like us Aussies), would you organise the copy to be for PAL and get the team to sign that one? Or are the copies already signed, NTSC copies?

Please do not use logos, art, screenshots, etc. from any video games...although most of that kind of material is legal to use on Planet GameCube for informational purposes, I'm pretty sure we could not legally use it for promotional purposes. You are free to use PGC's own art, screenshots from our DVD, images of the DVD box or t-shirt, old pictures of Louie sitting on top of hardware, clips from the Goombas comic...anything like that. But please don't use assets from other companies, because it may mean we wouldn't be able to use your entry, and while that wouldn't explicitly disqualify you, we aren't going to be selecting commercials that we can't use.

They will be NTSC copies, but you could play them with a Freeloader, most likely. Otherwise, it'll have to be a keepsake...and a nice one at that.

If so, can we encode the video using divx 5 codec? So the filesize is extremely smaller...

You can definitely use a 3D animator program if you then turn it into a standard movie format. DivX is fine.

Ok, sweet! I might try to work on something! It might just be your guy's logo, then says some stuff, then has like explosions and other special effects... maybe.. muwhhahhaha... Hehe.. :-/
We are allowed to submit as many things as we want right?
Oh, by the way, could I know what FONT is used for the logo? :-D
... sorry for editing it again, but, can we do parodies? Like, make something that Resembles, say a pikmin for example, or something...
EDIT 3: :-D Sorry for the edit again, but, can I model a Gamecube system and use it in the video, since it's copyrighted... Or is this just, no using Copyrighted Characters?

I sent in a video with mario music and references to gamecube. The GameCube logo appears in the background. Would this video be eligible or do they count as "copyrights" we can't use?

Check out the contest page to see all the new prizes! The total approx. prize value has more than DOUBLED!
Roger, we received your entry and it should be fine. We are Planet GAMECUBE after all, so I think using the GameCube itself is no problemo. I will talk to our staff artist, Ryan, about getting a hi-res version of the logo for you guys, as well as some of the fonts we use.

So there's X-Arcade controllers now?! Now I'm really going to try hard to win.
If I was to have an screenshots of the PGC web site in my entry would I have to remove the banner ads that appear on your site? You guys said there shouldn't be any copywritten material and I assume that would count as such. Though I'm sure the contest sponsors wouldn't mind if some of their ads made it in.
I assume that footage of me playing a Cube game is okay. How specific does the copyright stuff have to be? Do I have to blur out the "Toshiba" logo on my TV if it appears in my entry?
I just realized that the song "Five Long Years" by Colin James would be perfect background music for this except I, you know, didn't write it.

Title: RE: PGC's 5th Birthday Contest Bash!
Post by: Ian Sane on March 15, 2004, 01:35:53 PM
Here's another question.
Do you guys have a fifth anniversary related slogan you would want to use? At the end of my entry I'm planning on saying "PGC - Five Years and Going Strong" or something like that. If you guys had something specific to use for a slogan you guys wouldn't have to be shoehorned into using a slogan from the winning entry that you didn't make up yourself.

I've got so many ideas it's not funny. With the way I'm going, I've planned on 3 videos. Two are around 30 seconds, the other is longer. But there's no way I can learn to edit all the footage (if I have the courage to film any) in time for the deadline, unless I become a supercomputer and plug myself into the Matrix.

It can't be bigger than 1mb if you send it through an email attachment. It can be bigger if you have it on your own website... Right?

Sorry there is so much confusion, but this is a complicated thing, so I hope you'll bear with us. Some things are still being hammered out with the rules, and I'll try to keep you all informed in this thread and in the official rules.
1. We have discussed the matter of copyrighted materials, and we think it's probably okay if you use them, as long as you include some kind of disclaimer at the end saying that game assets are the property of their respective copyright holders, etc. Also, don't make fun of the games you are using. The publishers will probably not mind at all as long as we are acting in good faith and promoting their games while we also promote the website. This goes for game footage, game music, logos, advertising banners shown in screenshots of the website, etc. I am going to amend the official rules and contest announcement with this information today.
2. There are no hard time limits, but I think you will be hard pressed to create an effective commercial in less than thirty seconds or more than five minutes. Those are probably good rule-of-thumb boundaries.
3. You can make files larger than 1MB, but please don't attach them to your entry email. If your commercial is larger than 1MB, you need to host it on your own webspace and just include a link to it with your email and the other required information. This point is explained at least twice on the contest page, but I know there's a lot to read there and it can be easy to miss.
4. Again, your commercial can most definitely be animated, hand-drawn, 3D modeled, shot in live-action, whatever you want. If you plan to use live-action footage, keep in mind that this is a commercial, so you will probably want to stick to some kind of testimonial or using actors and a script, just like you would find in real commercials. We are not looking for the kinds of videos we had in last year's contest, with people showing us around their crazy Nintendo basements or destroying a brand new PS2. I hope that makes sense.
5. Yes, you may enter as many times as you wish (but don't send in straight duplicates, those will be thrown out). If you send in five good entries, you may have a higher chance of winning, if only because one of your entries may pique our interest whereas your other ones did not. However, I think we will stick to awarding the three prize packages to three different people, so you can't make a clean sweep.
6. Parodies are fine, but don't bash on a game or system. For instance, if you wanted to portray the PGC staff at E3 as a bunch of Pikmin running around gathering impressions, that's cool. But I don't think it would be a good idea to show Pikmin slaughtering each other, being crapped on by a giant dog, etc. You get my drift.

Ok, thanks for clearing up a lot of the details! I got a rather nice idea I want to TRY to do, hopefully i can get it accomplished!
Hey, 1 question though, what resolution should it be? Can the demo video be in 320*240, just so the filesize is small, and then if you choose the person, they could sned you a version that's like 640*480.. ? thanks!
Title: RE:PGC's 5th Birthday Contest Bash!
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on March 16, 2004, 07:30:09 PM
Why not save yourself the extra step and just send us the larger size? I think 640x480 is as big as you'd want to go though, otherwise you approach some people's entire resolution, and you may also end up with filesizes so large than it's not practical to distribute the file online.

That techie-looking font is called "abduction". I'm afraid we don't have the files for it handy, but you may be able to find it online with some searching.
I am also trying to upload a few versions of the logo and our video intro sequence, for anyone who wants to use them. I'll let you know when they are available.

You can download the PGC video intro/outro by right-clicking here and "Save Target As". CAUTION: This is a raw, uncompressed AVI file and is therefore very large, about 19MB. It's the thing that looks like the GameCube logo forming when you boot up your system, except it forms the PGC logo instead of the real GameCube logo.
I'll have hi-res versions of our logo next.

Title: RE:PGC's 5th Birthday Contest Bash!
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on March 22, 2004, 05:44:35 AM
We are still thinking of ways to distribute the commercial. Some good possibilities are a splash page for PGC, a link that you can email to your friends with a simple form, and handing out CDs at E3 and other events.
I hadn't thought of using it as a banner, because I figure the shape of most entries would be prohibitive. But if you want to submit a banner ad made with Flash or an animated GIF, we would certainly consider that on equal ground with the larger entries.

Okay this line has been added to the rules: "you insert the following message at the end of your commercial: 'All game materials are the property of their respective copyright holders.'"
I already sent my entry and it doesn't have that. All I use that is copywritten is footage of myself playing games on my TV. So am I disqualified for not having that disclaimer? Can I add that to the file and send it in again or what?
Title: RE:PGC's 5th Birthday Contest Bash!
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on March 29, 2004, 09:32:32 AM
It's not a big deal if you forgot that message at the end. You can either put it in and send us the new version (just mention that it's the previous one amended), or leave the way it is, and if we choose your entry, we will ask you to insert the message before we can use it.
