Title: Zelda Master Sword complete!
Post by: Coarse_Limely on March 04, 2004, 04:32:06 PM
Don't remember if I posted this here awhile back or not, but I had a replica of the Link to the Past Master Sword made. Check it out: http://www.smitesoftware.com/images/Sword3.JPG I think it turned out rather well.

That is most definitely cool. I've always wanted a replica of the Master Sword ever since I first played ALttP years ago. How much did that cost you anyway?
Title: RE:Zelda Master Sword complete!
Post by: Coarse_Limely on March 05, 2004, 04:13:24 PM
It cost around $3000 altogether. I consider it an investment. Swinging this thing around is sure to give me chisled abs and healthy biceps. Bowflex and Chuck Norris can take their excercise machines and shove 'em. www.castlekeep.co.uk is the website of the blacksmith who made it. Check out his work.

I guess it's true.

That's amazing. Amazingly expensive, but amazing nonetheless.

No, Gibdo Master. The sword is made of a plastic on the quality of the Sword of Omens toy from the Thundercats cartoon show in the 80's.</sarcasm> Of course it's a real sword! Irresponsibly sharp, at that. The only time I would actually use it in battle would be an extremely anachronistic circumstance, though, such as a challenge to the death for the love of a lady. I've got a plain old Starfire sword for practice combat.

Title: RE:Zelda Master Sword complete!
Post by: Coarse_Limely on March 06, 2004, 07:53:40 PM
Actually, I've got an Ocarina that looks a lot more like the one in the game than the Songbird ones. It was made unofficially at the Renaissance Faire, and the Ocarina maker only made a few of them for fear of legal action from Nintendo. I'll take a picture of it later.

Well, I wasn't totally sure.
Did the the guy from Castle Keep say anything about it? I mean, did he know it was from a video game and stuff, or did you just send in the pic, he made it, end of story?
You should tell Nintendo about this as well, if you haven't already.

When I grow old and gray, I think I'll just sit in a cave under a secret gravestone with the sword on the floor and say "Master using it and you can have this." to anyone who comes in. The first person who comes along and has enough Heart Containers gets to keep it. I've still got a good 60 years before then, though. Deal?

This sword is SO cool. I'm a rabid Zelda collector and anything that has anything to do with Zelda must be mine. And even though I thought I had some cool Zelda items (a 40cm tall Link statue from Germany, the WW-Link bobble head figure, a still closed box of the Nintendo Cereal System, and lots of other things I should make a website about) this is way better than the lot of them. How much would it cost for them to make another replica, seeing as they've already done the molds and such? I really want one, however I think I'd get the OoT blue one. Do they also make sheaths for them? The OoT blue and gold sheath is just too cool.

Heh, thankfully, I've kept my email address hidden on this forum. I've only received emails from the editor who asked to write up the story, and a few friends who have seen the story linked to elsewhere and popping up on other message forums. My name is known to Zelda fans in the Netherlands, Great Britain, France, Germany, and elsewhere. It's pretty cool...so long as none of them find out where I live.

Quote No, that was DoS attacks and hackers.
Hackers are people who know really well the workings of a specific medium or problem, and they develop a sort of natural intuition for it. Kids who carry out DOS attacks are called 'crackers'. Getting the two mixed up is a big no-no.

Heh. I thought maybe it was because this other guy came on and was showing off his sword, claiming to be so much more of a hardcore Zelda fan than me because he got it a few months earlier than me. The thing looked like it was rather cheaply made, complete with plastic round jewels for the eye. I told him rather curtly that mine could chop through his like warm butter. Like on the GAMECUBE Soul Calibur II commercial, remember? Slice!

The article got Slashdotted, too, and the huge increase in traffic was making the site run really slow- although I doubt it, PGC might have taken the story down to prevent the site from crashing.

I couldn't find either- I had to send manunited to this thread instead.
Also, the sword is based on the Master Sword from LttP, no? If so, then it is indeed a faithful replica- I don't think a guy willing to dish out $3,000 for a sword would arbitrarily decide on the wrong color for the hilt.
Title: RE: Zelda Master Sword complete!
Post by: Gibdo Master on March 12, 2004, 05:55:25 PM
Yeah, it's based on the ALttP sword. Who wants a sword with a purple hilt?
Title: RE:Zelda Master Sword complete!

While I do love the LttP design, I like the WW design the best, especially when it's fully upgraded.

I like the Ocarina of Time version better than the Wind Waker version, myself. The Ocarina of Time version just wasn't practical, though. Smelting the steel to obtain the blue coloration would have cost me $2000 more than I paid for the Link to the Past version. After I become a successful video game designer I'll be able to afford it, but not on the salary of a video arcade manager.

Da-- corn, you say? Frolicking, you say? Lo?! You do know me from high school, don't you? Mysterious and mysteriouser. The choice of phrases does narrow it down a bit, and the amount of hatred I've chalked up with a few of the people on that list narrows it even further. Interesting. I'll check out that PM right away.
"Never bring a knife to a gun fight," though? Someone needs to watch Cowboy Bebop. If Vicious can do it, so can I. He did have a sword, though, of course.

The blade is 28" long, 2 3/4" wide, and 1/4" thick at the thickest part. This doesn't include the crosspiece, hilt, and pommel.

You really shouldn't carry a knife into any combat unless you're skilled at and willing enough to using it. Most attackers will probably be able to take it off you and use it against you if you aren't.
Title: RE:Zelda Master Sword complete!
Post by: Coarse_Limely on March 21, 2004, 09:01:32 AM
Yes, but how likely are they to be more skilled at using it than you are, since you actually own the blade and they just took it from you? Besides, I've had some broadsword and kendo training, so I at least have the basics of "How to not chop off one's own foot," and "Dropping your sword in combat is the last mistake you'll ever make. Have a man's grip or die."

you can make the steel blue? Why not... paint it or something? I didn't think the handle of the master sword was metal, too
Title: RE:Zelda Master Sword complete!
Post by: Coarse_Limely on April 08, 2004, 10:32:08 AM
What did you think the handle of the Master Sword was made of? Anything other than metal would be too fragile to handle all of the bashing, slashing, chopping, and other impacts that Link puts it through, all magic aside. It does look like a stone of some sort, though, doesn't it?
Anywho, yes, you can make metal blue, but it's a complicated process that's costly and can also weaken the metal to a certain degree, as I understand it. Painting it would look ugly and/or require constant touch-ups.

I have a few questions for you.... First off, did you get the tri-force symbol just forged into the sword, or did you get the actual dimensions and the sword from nintendo? (or whoever owns the rights) If so, how did you get the legality part of the project taken care of? I wanted to get some "authentic" work from some anime done myself and just wandered how I could go about doing it. Thanks for the help!!
Title: RE:Zelda Master Sword complete!
Post by: Coarse_Limely on April 08, 2004, 02:25:58 PM
The TriForce was engraved into the metal after the blade was finished.
So long as the item isn't being mass-produced and sold on ebay or anything like that, legality really isn't an issue. It shouldn't be a problem to have your replicas made.
As for the dimensions, I extrapolated them from the games within a certain margin for error and scaled them to my own height vs. Link's (I'm a bit taller).

Say, Coarse_Limely, I've got a question for ya: How heavy is that (really nice) sword anyway? I just got Narsil in and that thing is about 10 kilo's. Here are some measurements: Overall Length: 52-7/8" Blade Length: 40-5/8" Blade Thickness: 1/4"
Title: RE:Zelda Master Sword complete!
Post by: Coarse_Limely on April 10, 2004, 05:15:29 PM
My sword is around 14 pounds. It already feels a lot lighter than when I first received it. I managed to find a swing that doesn't intercept any of my furnature and I've been training with it every day.
I like the replicas of Narsil that are circulating, myself. My favorite is the Shards of Narsil one, though, where it's still in its shattered state. Not very useful, but a great-looking display piece.

Gack!! It's just as I thought, it's way too dark, it has no silver metal band with the triforce and the swirly engraving, it's a bit too long and pointy looking, and the mouthpiece is too square!! I don't think I'll ever find a person with an actual decent replica.
That is the closest thing I've found and unfortunately it isn't real (I'm pretty sure that's an official picture also). Thank you for posting your pictures though.

That is the closest thing I've found and unfortunately it isn't real (I'm pretty sure that's an official picture also). Thank you for posting your pictures though.
That still looks pretty close to a real ocarina. It's sweet.

It saddens me to know that no one seems to be able to make an accurate replica. I guess I'll just get a songbird one if I can't get a better one made. I'll try the rednecks my friend knows. Wish me luck people.

This is gonna be one of my summer projects. Task 1: Make up some songs and lyrics to audition for this band Task 2: Make a tuned Ocarina Task 3: Make an accurate replica of the Zelda Ocarina.

Jale, are you really gonna make an ocarina? o_O That's such a cool idea. Sounds like a lot of work. Good luck.

Well I've read several things on it. Shouldn't be too hard. It's a pretty simple instrument. The hardest part will be placing and tuning the holes.

Making up songs and lyrics is going to be hard too. Well good luck Jale! You're going to need it...

As long as I get the holes right I should be fine with tunes. An ocarina can play an octave and I'm a pretty adept composer so I should be fine.

I know where to go to learn all of the songs. Well, most of them anyway.

One time I was in Seattle in a place called Pike's Place Market with my friends for some activity or something. Anyway, we didn't want to be there, but we had to so we walked around looking at stuff. Then we walked right passed it. A booth. I caught it with the corner of my eye, but as I turned back, I swore I saw a statue of Link and Zelda. Then the sales lady asked me if I wanted to buy an exact replica of the Ocarina of Time. She took it out of a green, velvet pouch and handed it to me. It was perfect. It was the same blue color, with the gold band with the Triforce on it. I couldn't believe it (please forgive me on making this a life story, but it's simply for dramatics). Before I knew the outragous price, I told her that I'll take it. I have it in my room right now, and someday I'll put a picture in here (my printer/copier/faxer/scanner is down at the moment...it always is...stupid hp printer).

I once got a whole bag of look-alikes of the ocarina of time, but without the golden band, they were made of plastic and half of them were red! I will trr to get a picture of one in here(and on a side note, it plays like a recorder instrument).

The band is supposed to be silver, not gold. With little swirly engravings and an embossed Triforce emblem.
