The Wal*Mart I work at has a third party memory card (59 blocks) for $4.97 (or thereabouts).  I think Nyko makes it.

One thing I never quite understood...  How many MB = how many blocks?

no you don't really, third party memory cards, on any platform (psx, n64, ps2, gcn, dc) are usually utter garbage, usually.

That 5 dollar card sounds good enough to get me started. I can always grab a more expensive card later.

I want to get one of those mega-memory cards (over 1000 blocks), just to keep misc stuff on that I wouldn't mind losing if the card failed, like racing ghosts, playback movies, Smash Bros. pics, rented game saves, etc.

If i were u i would listen to Bill, just get the nintendo 251 its well worth it.  If not try stores that arent known to sell games like sam goody stores, they usually will have cheap 3rd party stuff on clearance.

A LOT of times you get what you pay for. I suggest sticking with official Nintendo Memory Cards. Many of the 3rd party ones are known to flat out die or lose data.

I haven't had any problems from 3rd party cards in the past so I'm not worried.

Well I don't really know any known problem with third party mem cards.  In fact the only problem I heard about 3rd party memory cards was this one 3rd party GCN memory card that has I think 1024 blocks and that it.  You can read the problem on http://gear.ign.com  Its not hard to find.  I got three PSX memory cards the same size as the 1st party for $15.  The 1st party one which only comes with on is $15.  I do admit a lot of times that I will prefer 1st party stuff because thats where I can put mos tof my trust in of course.

I would only avoid 3rd party when they try to do better with something they can totally change a lot in.  Like controllers.

I haven't had problems with any of my 3rd party memory cards.  The only thing that sucks about them is that they don't fit in the game's case.

The best deal I have seen on any memory card was 14 bucks. The card is twice the size of the 59.

Casey, what bookstore was this? A chain store or a privately owned store? I know some 'Software, etc' stores used to be located inside B.Dalton bookstores but that stopped long ago.

That's a good deal, but you can get a Memory Card 251, which is nearly 5 times the size, for only $5 more.
