Title: Digital only titles?
Post by: jasonditz on February 26, 2004, 08:56:59 AM
I just bought a Pelican "Real Arcade" Joystick, one of those fancy arcade style thingies with the wooden base. Anyhow, its really neat and all, but what games will it work on (being the single Joystick is digital only)?

The box lists the following:

Soul Caliber 2
Capcom vs SNK EO
Godzilla: DAMM
Mortal Kombat: DA
Bloody Roar

It also works well with those Arcade compilation discs obviously...  which is the main reason I bought it. Anyhow, besides those, are there any other games I should be keeping an eye out for that don't use Analog control?

I think all the Tony Hawk games let you go digital, am I right?

Edit: others from my collection that I noted:
Pac Man Fever
Beach Spikers
Sonic Mega Collection

Can't it submit its information pretending to be an analog stick?

Yeah, but it still makes a lot of games practically unplayable.

Viewtiful Joe
Resident Evil
P.N. 03

So far Capcom is quite TEH Stoopid when it comes to analog usage.

I think FF: CC uses digital control, I don't know if you'd want to use it with it though.

Actually you may be able to answer one of my questions...does it make smash bros. unplayable?  Cause i think smash bros could be fun with a stick like that....and I can't think of a time where i ever didn't push the stick all the way in one direction....

The box specifically mentioned SSBM as unplayable.

I'll have to give it a try later on though... you never know.

Well, you'd always smash, so...

Well, it might be trying to say the joystick is ONLY mapped to D-pad controls, meaning it won't feed any analog directional data to the GameCube whatsoever, therefore you have SSBM without an analog stick, hence unplayable.

You can still play SSBM without using the analog stick. Set the stock to one life, and items on, and see who can stay on the stage for the longest. You never know when a bomb could just drop from the sky and hit you, and the stage could morph itself at any minute, resulting in movement! Fun for the whole family.

Oh yeah, and Tony Hawk Underground i think is digital.

I did a Google, and though I didn't get anything certain, I think Ikaruga might just use it. It would be logical. Once again, I'm not entirely sure of this, but it might be worth a try.

SSBM: set items to very high and only allow Pokeballs. Now you're cooking with gas.

Not if he can't move.  If the stick is mapped to the d-pad, be can't move the character.

Update:

SSBM is playable, more or less.

The Joystick on the arcade stick is by default mapped to the d-pad, but there is a mode button that allows it to function as the analog joystick (only with digital input) and also as a C-stick.

I'm not sure I like it as well this way, but I need to spend more time with it to see for sure.

FWIW, the joystick makes the Midway Arcade Gallery worthwhile, and it makes Mortal Kombat a lot more fun.

I'm definately ordering Capcom vs. SNK, and I'm also looking for Soul Calibur 2 at a decent price.

The Joystick was a great investment, I can't believe Gamestop had it so cheap (only $29.99).

Does it seem like its gonna last? Pelican stuff always breaks on me...

BTW, i just picked up Midway Arcade Treasures today and I'm pleased.  I'm kind of pissed at the unlimited quarters thing in gauntlet.  Kind of makes competition in the game pointless...

I've had 4 Pelican S-video cables break on me.  Damn that bird!

Seems solid enough.
