Title: Couldn't a third party like Datel or Mad Catz create a harddrive for the GameCube?

Just wondering a 10gig HD that costs $50 would probably sell like mad.
Who else would buy one? (Considering Nintendo didn't release their own)

Not to mention the fact that no developers would create software that used a 3rd party-only product...

It's been a couple of years and we've never needed a hard drive. I don't think there's any need for one now. THe SD Card idea was good, but it may be a tad too late for that, unless it is one of the peripherals NIntendo is planning.

I'm just NOW needing to get a second 251 card, and I've got a library of 30+ games. Of course, I don't play memory hogging sports titles either...

Um it would work the same as a regular memory card so there would be no need to program games specifically for it. I just find it annoying to have like 4-5 memory cards laying around..
2 animal crossing cards (me and my brother) 1 251
then we have a hipgear 59block for backup or rental games etc.
its games like Pikmin and SSBM that fill it like mad with 20+ blocks.
How I love games that take up a mere 3 or less blocks METROID PRIME

The game would need to be programed to take advantage of the HD. A third party can't make it react and act just like a mem card.

Since it would only be used for storage there's no point. Part of the advantage of the Xbox HD is that it allows for downloadable content and custom made soundtracks. Those features are completely unavailable with a third party hard drive. Plus considering how unreliable third party storage is I wouldn't want to save my games to it. There are enough problems with losing saves on third party storage.
I would prefer something that lets you copy the contents of a memory card to a computer hard drive. Not only would that be more reliable (and cheaper since nearly everyone who owns a Cube has a computer) but it would allow for saves to be traded online. Actually I think this device might actually exist or has been announced.

Ian: Look at Lik-Sang, they have a 64MB USB memcard. Use the USB-plug to copy data to and from the card.

Accually there whould have to program the games to recogonize that port as a place to save games. Its not like you plop it in and it automatically is reconized. The USB.. BRB comp is about to crash.

after hearing my friend rave about the fact that he never notices when his Xbox saves, Im all for a hard drive. downloadable content be damned, memory cards are slow.

What happened to those things that allowed you to read memory cards to the pc. Miss those things...
Oh well, my nyko 1024block card still has ways to go before it is full, still another 250 blocks...
