Title: Accessories for the GC?
Post by: evilnate on February 10, 2004, 08:48:51 AM
Now that the dust has settled on this whole rumor issue, and we now know that there are several new add-ons in development for the Gamecube, what would everyone like to see?  I've come up with a few ideas that I think might work, not only from a gameplay standpoint, but from a buisness standpoint as well.  Some are more far-fetched than others, however...

1) A Headset:  With the rumors of new online-capable games swirling around (such as Splinter Cell 2), this seems like a possibility.  Not only could a headset provide voice chat capability online, but voice recognition in single player games.  This would have to come as a pack-in with a killer app, but it's worked before (just look at the rumble pack that came with Starfox 64)

2) Online Gameboy Games:  While I'm not entirely sure on this, but from everything that I've read, the GBP can access all of the GC's internal hardware, including the modem/BBA.  So wouldn't be a simple matter of releasing a new GBP disc that would allow the BBA to act as a substitue link cable?  You'd have to have some sort of ISP seach function to find other players wanting to play the same game as you, but given the software that's out there (as well as new games that could be created), this might be very popular.  A side benefit:  this could be a way to get a ton of GCs online - thus making online gaming more attractive to third parties.  Pack the new GBP disc in with the BBA and you might have a winner.

3) A Hard Drive:  While I'm not so sure about the benefits of this, if they do want to push an online strategy, then a hard drive might be a nice addition.

4) An Optical/Coax DD 5.1 output:  I'm not certain if the bandwidth of the other Serial Port could handle this, but it would certaintly complement my nice, new component cables nicely.

So what would everyone like to see?  While Nintendo has had many failed add-ons, they've had a few sucessful one, more than most other companies can claim!

1) A new Mario Paint with mouse accessory.
2) A Nintendo version of Konami's Dance Dance Revolution with special Nintend-style dance pad.
3) A voice recognition game (non-Pikachu) with microphone.
4) The release of a tilt-sensor game like "Roll-a-Rama" with appropriate accessory.
5) A new Gameboy Camera for the GBA/SP which, through the link-cable, to upload images into Gamecube games.

Basically, I think the accessories Nintendo is referring to are more along the lines of the Konga Drum than a hard-drive or 64DD-type add-on.

I would really like a light gun.  But I don't think they'll do one.
As for new gadget, knowing Nintendo, it could be anything that we don't care of.  Forget the hard drive, there is simply no need for one.  Dito for the headset, they are way too late in the online thing to get it done well.  The real question is: will it affect gameplay in any way?  I just hope that the new things they will not be GBA/GC connectivity related.

What I would really like:
Someting made by Nintendo for managing and store save game on my computer.  It's simple yet quite usefull.

Almost forgot: why not make a Voodoo doll in the shape of Mario that attrack third parties?

Optical/Coax:  Sorry to burst your bubble, but the serial port does not send enough bandwith or receive enough information from the apu to make that work.

I didn't think so, but one can hope, right?

As for some of the other suggestions, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that any new accessories are not in the Donkey Konga vein.  While that game might be fun, I want to see devices that could be useful for as wide a variety of games as possible, ya know?

Well I think I can safely say that online GBA games is not going to happen.  Nintendo doesn't even want to make online Cube titles.  Why would they make online GBA titles that can only be used with the GB Player?

On thing I would like to see is a mouse.  I don't mean for something like Mario Paint I was thinking more for an RTS.  An exclusive Nintendo RTS that comes packed-in with a mouse could be pretty cool and if they kept quiet about it until only a few months before release the competition wouldn't be able to release anything similar to steal its thunder.  Stuff like konga drums are neato but they really only work with one game.  A mouse is flexible enough to accommodate several different games.  Aside from strategy games it would work well for sim/tycoon and point-and-click adventure games.

An RTS packed with a mouse....
What a brilliant idea.  This would be amazing and would open the door to more RTS.

I wasn't thinking that they'd make "online only" GBA games.  Rather, they could take games such as Four Swords or Advance Wars that require multipak gaming and make them playable across the internet, using either the modem or BBA and the GBP.

I'm betting this all has to do with a Hard Drive addon.

Hard drives are great for custom soundtracks. I love playing games while listening to remixes of old school game music. Remixed Zelda, mario, Bubble Bobble, Sonic the hedgehog tunes etc add a nice feel to most games.

I'm guessing it will be an expansion pack sort of thing. That would be real cool.  It makes sense too. I'm all for better graphics capibilities.

the best accessory they could come out with is........

variety - where are the light gun games?  how about the flight sims?  a broader selection of fighters would be nice.  it appears we are slowly losing the supports franchises.  am I the only one seeing that GCN is heading down the path of the 64?

It's been said for quite a while that a GC version of Fire Emblem is in the works at IS, so you just may get your wish...

RTS games just dont work for me on consoles.  much like the Sims dont work for me.  Consoles are far too limited in scope to acomodate a game like Command And Conquer with all the bells and whistles in tact.  still, for the sake of broadening GC's horizons and the fact that if one gamer wants, there are more that agree, I say bring on the mouse.

Ohh.. I wonder what that would look like.  Whether they would continue going with high-quality 2D or use 3D models...

I wasn't much of a RTS fan, but i did somewhat enjoy Advance Wars.  Fire Emblem just takes that fun formula and puts in fricken dragons and magic and what not.

I was never a fan of the overly complicated strategy games.  Thats why i think a console strategy game is the best solution for my tastes.

I really think that mouse idea could work. Does Pikmin2 fall into the RTS realm?  Remember the GameEye, GBA camera thingy. SD adaptor. I am sure that one of these things is a wireless GCN-GBA link. Does anybody remember that Motion-Capture video device from 2001. Maybe they could combine the GameEye camera and said device and allow the player to ...I don't know Motion-Capture stuff.

Mefinks it will be something to greater uber-ize the handle on the back of the GC.  Think of it.  A mega-ton handle.  Ooh.  Aah.

As many people have stated before in previous posts about similar topics, the GCN Limited Edition Waffle Iron attachment is my guess.  Think about it, playing one of Nintendo's excellent games while smelling the light aroma of your waffle cooking to golden brown goodness ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!!  mmmmmm, waffles.....

lets think about this rationally before we get ahead of ourselves and ou hopes for the NGC.  lets speculate for a second that it is a hard drive.  you've got your broadband adapter plugged in along with your GBPlayer.  that leaves only Serial Port2 open.  and the only access would be a cable run out the side.  so, i really think any accessory that would require plugging into the bottom is out of the question.  i'm thinking more peripherals.  different controllers of some sort, that kind of thing.  if they make me sacrifice my GBPlayer for a Hard Drive, someone is going to have some explaining to do.  does this seem rational?

Online GBA?  I would rather have it that it worked like a wireless phone and you can see a list of people who have their phone on and choose who you want to play.

I would sacrifice the GBPlayer for a harddrive.  GB is mainly for outside the house and when you're free of wire.

they could make the hard drive capable of being a pass through for the GB player, you know.  Basically, the hard drive plugs into your GC and the GB player plugs into that.  wouldnt be that tough to pull off.

I for one would never shell out more than 25$ for a GC harddrive.  I don't see any benefit for such a thing.  Custom soundtrack???  Yeah....  My brother he have a XBox and we seriously think that while cool, the Hard Drive could have been sold as an add-on to lower the XBox price.  This things is not mandatory and he don't use it much except for saving his game.   And I don't think that publisher will jump on the hardrive this late in the GC life.  A hard drive = N64 DD.
I even bet that MS will not include the HD in their next gen system.

I bought my GC today!! and to be honest, the only thing that has annoyed me, and annoyed me plenty, is no way of saving my games in the box!  I'm used to Pc and XBOX so I guess It's just that memory card whatsits is a new concept to me, but I had to get a Game memory card and second controller for £15 which in itself is not a bad price, but I hear I may have problems with the memory card overheating as it's not a Nintendo one :/

Hard drive add on will make my life easier but should of been included as they are cheaper than a night on the town nowadays.

I'd much rather of paid £30 for a hard drive add on, than £6.99 for a third party 4MB!!!!!????  memory card :/

Hi.  Newbie posting here.  Have a 6 yr. old with both a 64 and a Gamecube.  Problem is that OI have to unplug one to let him play the other.  Anyone know of where I can get a switching box that will aloow both to be plugged in at the same time??  I'd appreciate any info you might have about name, where to order, etc.  Many thanks.

GameStop and EBgames stores tend to have "system selectors" that typically run for $20, supporting up to 5 systems.

Target and Wal-mart will also have selectors/switchboxes (different brands, but identical functions) in the same price range, usually for up to 4 systems.  You'll have to find these in the Audio/Video cables section, not the video game section.
