Title: I got to play Metroid Zero Mission! (Tiny Spoilers?)
Post by: MysticalMatt517 on January 26, 2004, 04:28:54 PM
So Zero Mission is supposed to be out Feb 2nd right? Well today I'm at Target and I'm wandering through the GBA accessory section looking for a headphone kit for my SP. I look down at the GBA-SP demo display that they have out and notice that there's and advertisement on it for Zero Mission. I look down at the screen and well... It looks very much like Metroid... So I went to the title screen and sure enough... They've got Metroid Zero Mission on this thing!

I got to play through a lot of the first level before I had to go and let me tell you... This game is B-E-A-UTIFUL! The graphics are simply gorgeous! I would venture to say that they're some of the best on the GBA so far. You start out with like next to no abilities and you gain them throughout the game. In the time I played I got the morph ball and the long beam. There's also these huge statue like things that have their hands extended. You morph into a ball, roll into their hands, and get recharged along with occasionally getting told where the next point on the map you need to go is. Super cool!

Anyway, everyone go check your local Targets. I don't know if it was just mine or if all of them did this... It was an unexpected treat though!

If you got the missiles can you explain how the controls are setup? I've been curious if they work the same way they did in Fusion or if they've been modified for this game. How was the difficulty of the game? Also how much information did the Chozo Statues give you? Was it just a little hint or was it more like Adam in Metroid Fusion where he would tell you exactly where to go and what to do?

When you first start the game you have two options: Normal and Easy. I chose normal and felt it was about the same difficulty as Fusion. The statues give you a point on the map to go to, but don't tell you what to do when you get there. I didn't get missles so I can't comment :-(.

I read the review in Game Informer and it really backed up everything I thought it would be.

it got a 9.5 and a second opinion of a 9.75 which shows how high it was thought of. They even go over the extra content

Yeah i've got it and i'm playing on normal
As for missiles it's the same as fusion
The only differences i noticed is you seam to walk a bit quicker, there is map rooms to expand your map, morph bombs seem to go off quicker (you can still get super high) and all the expected differences like energy balls and missiles instead of the "X" things and you have ice beam rather than ice missiles
Also, with regards to the statue things, some of them give you power ups and the others show you points on your maps where have to go next, but most of the time they're off the map so you have to work out how to get there on your own.
Also finding your way around is a nice challenge because it isn't completely straight forward. I've had a pretty lucky run, finding alot of things by accident
I've fought one boss and he was not too hard not too easy

Bombs explode really quickly in this, which allows for infinite bomb jumping. (did SM have this? I can't remember) Should be interesting to see what kind of sequence breaking that allows.

The game is extremely easy on normal mode. Especially the bosses. Even Ridley, who is generally regarded as one of the Metroid series' toughest battles, can be defeated within literally 30 seconds. (but he was also easy in the original, so I guess it's okay) But hard mode, which can only be unlocked after beating the game, is a lot harder. Upgrades give you less, weapons do less damage and enemies do more. And apparently bosses are affected by your item completion, so the more items you have, the harder it gets.

Oh, and there isn't any text conversations like in Fusion. The story is delivered completely visually, except for the occasional Samus monologue which only pops up 2 or 3 times in the game.

So yeah. This game kicks ass. The UK isn't getting it until april though. =/
