Title: Is Animal crossing for everyone?
Post by: yacool on January 19, 2004, 03:16:42 PM
I've convinced my 12 year-old little sister that animal crossing will be a good game (she wanted Sims) but will she be able to play and enjoy it as much as i would even though she never plays games?

I disagree its better than the sims, the sims is probably about 10x better including gameplay and graphics. Animal crossing will suit a 12 year old better than the sims. You cant do anywhere near as much as you can in animal corssing as you can in the sims.

IMO, AC is much more entertaining than The Sims, and definitely the better choice for a young non-gamer...

I have a feeling that she'll like AC. I find that The Sims just gets boring too quickly, even compared to AC.

I hated the Sims but I'm totally addicted to AC! I've made it my personal quest to get all the NES games!

I still can't really decide if Animal Crossing is actually a good game or merely an addictive one. Nonetheless you can't really put it down. At one point I had to just quit playing it because I was planning my life around it. It's like a disease.
The only real flaw in Animal Crossing is that because it uses a real time clock if you work a 9-5 it's hard to get the most out of the game because it's always night time when you play. Obviously this shouldn't affect a 12 year old as school is a decent routine schedule for AC. I say go for it because it's really a game for non-gamers.

i haven't touched AC in months, after the inital week and a half i played it, working a full time job made it sucky, i don't like a game that forces me to play, having said that i put the sims down after i drowned my entire family, zzzzzworthy (that would be sleep worthy, for the less savvy)
oh and animex, learn to not suck at forums

Well, it held my attention for over a year before I finally quit playing it, so yeah, you'll get your money's worth, especially now that it's $30... plus it's something you both can play together.

Animal Crossing is one of those games where you get exactly as much OUT of it as you put INTO it. The game is addictive, especially if you're a "collecting" type of person in RL.
The characters are memorable.....especially when they lie to your face, insult you or are pissed off, there's TONS to do and the coolest reason to turn it on every day is to see what changes happened in the world while you were gone.
Alas, after a while it does get tedious, but hey, for $30 it's awesome while it lasts....and you get a free memory card in with the deal!!!

RL?? RL?? Is that an acronym for "real life"? Have we as gamers become so detached from reality that we have to use acronyms to refer to it?

In any case, I love Animal Crossing, and in my opinion, the game is worth it for the classic NES games alone.

There's a great NES game guide for Animal Crossing on GameFAQs (NES Games FAQ). You should have gotten two free that were already on your memory card (Nintendo's "special gift").

My wife & I enjoyed our own towns on Animal Crossing, played it daily for a month and then never touched it again. We both played The Sims for about two days. AC prevents burn-out by limiting what you can do in a day, but unless you're collection-happy, there isn't a lot in the game for you. The Sims requires you baby-sit morons who can't go to the bathroom by themselves and can go on indefinately. It's fun for a little while, but gets old quickly.

I am in my 40's ! I have been gaming since gaming started and I have to say the AC is the MOST addicting game I ever encountered. It is a very soothing low keyed game. No stress out moments. it is great game to play if you have down time or a little stressed. it is very hard for me to explain. because all you do is these menial task, and get insulted by animals. I actually get attached to some animals. It is interesting if you like to collect things. Oh and sometimes the glitches are good. Like today I saw one of the animals walking on the railroad tracks. Get the game, but be warned the adults might become more addicted to it then the kids.

Well, it depends on if your sister has got some patience or not. Animal Crossing is truly I game that demands patience of the player (not everyone seems to be okay with fishing, talking and doing errands, knowing that there actually isn't much more to it, than that).
Animal Crossing is also a game that really should be played quite regulary; otherwise cockroaches move into your house and stirr things up a little.

well, if someone will ever say that there isn't much to do on a day in Animal Crossing and you like the sims more because of that, its bullshit. What you must do in a day of the Sims : you wake up, you'll give your Sims all your orders, hit the superspeed button, wait for them to finish and do it again for a few times a day. After a few days, you'll have enough money to buy some new things. That's it. The animations of your Sims or fun for a day or two but that's it. The only thing that remains is making your house look cool. That's were the game's quality lies if you ask me. Don't get me wrong, I like the Sims but the same actions (eating, showering, sleeping etc.) are just so boring and the conversations aren't much better either. In Animal Crossing it's much better I think cause you are actually the one who is interacting with the animals by making choices to do errands they ask you to and pick answers, writing letters etc. The furnishing of the house is kind of the some as the Sims, only a bit less complex but that doesn't really bother me since there are a lot more things to collect and you have to get can't buy them from the catalog straight away. The best part of Animal Crossing is the real time clock and all the little things that make Animal Crossing to what it is. And it is great.
So I think Animal Crossing is better as the Sims because you do everything yourself and the because of that things don't boring so fast (BTW: I've been playing the game everyday since 23rd January with my first character, and played it +- at least every three days with my other three characters (! I couldn't get enough of it LOL !)(theline continues->) and because of the real time clock instead of some kind of speed up tool (which is totally neccesary in the sims to prevent you from falling asleep yourself ).
And another tip: Buy both games so your little sister learns a new lesson
Laterz, Edward (back to SkaTown - Holland)
PS: I guess that was a long difficult post for someone who doesn't speaks English that wel

Well, I just have to add something.
See, when I first got AC and for a long while after it was my most played game. It holds the record for continuous playing time (12 hours srtaight). But I grew tired of it after a while because there was nothing to do. I am ashamed to say it, but I cheated and used universal codes to get lots of items to finish sets and many NES game.. It just became too boring for me after that.
Now, a year later, I've come back and now play it everyday again. Why? Because I gave up most of my material possesions (in the game, silly). Kinda like a Buddhist 'find inner peace' doowab. There were some things I just couldn't let go of (<3 Balloon Fight) but for the most part I started over. Of course, there were ALOT of weeds to clean up when I got back, but now things are running smoothly again. (excpet for the fact that the villagers can't undertand anything i write to them. I tried using simple words they would undertand, too. I said, "Hello. You are my friend." and they sent stuff back to me like "What are you saying? I couldn't understand one word you said. Please stop sending me letters.")

they always seem to understand me if I'm talking in decent English words. OF course not exactly, but they happen to understand some really lil things. but I agree that the letter system sucks. do you happen to know how I can get more NES games? I only got soccer from the AC site but I can't find them anywhere in the game. And Soccer isn't that great

Usually for NES games you just have to wait untill they appear in your town somehow. Just keep checking your bulletin(sp?) board for a message like "Donkey Kong/A special prize is buried in D-3."
I think soccer is pretty fun actually, but not as fun as Balloon Fight. Balloon Fight kicks ass.

Is Animal Crossing for everyone? Most definitely not. I'd say gamers that crave constant action, blood, gore, and instant gratification aren't going to like it. But if you are one of the ones that is ends up appealing to, then be prepared to be addicted for a long time.
I'm 31 and bought this game when it came out. I knew I'd like it before I bought it but had no idea how great the game was going to be for me. I played about 4 months straight (almost every day), and then finally kicked the habit for about 2 months. Then, one day I decided to play again and ended up getting hooked again for another 3 or 4 months. I finally forced myself to quit playing it because I couldn't get any play time in with my other games, it was all going toward AC. I'd buy a new game and then have to play AC for an hour every day before playing my new game.
My wife and daughter both loved it also. I wish the game had a timer that showed how long someone has played because I know I'd be right around 400 hrs. To this day I won't play it because I don't want to become addicted again. However, I consider the greatest game I've ever played and I've been gaming since Atari/Colecovision. I can't wait to see what Nintendo does with this franchise although I also dread it too

I hope they will put some cool new features in the next game. A furniture creator would be awesome. Just with a simple concept, like the with, height and length of a object, then you could choose a mesh for it (maybe editible) and then just draw the 4 (or 8) sides of the object. That would be really cool cause then you can really make unique homes. And the patterns may have a lot more pixels if you ask me. Also a online feature would be cool, in the form of a shop or something where you can start your own (market) stand and show of all your cool stuuf you've made to sell it. And an online happy room academy would be cool to. Online towns (I mean towns where different players live) shouldn't work I think. But online visiting should be cool to (and that you can set limitations for visitors, like you can't visit if the 'owner' isn't around, put on a password or choose if visitors can take stuff out of your town and take it as they leave etc.) And more facilities in a town, where you can relax and enjoy little things or just hang out with some animals. But not to modern cause it still has to be a forest.
