Title: Internet Browsers?
Post by: SearanoX on January 14, 2004, 03:11:10 PM
So, which browsers are you guys using? I'm assuming most use Internet Explorer...but hey, there could be someone who made their own browser or something.
I'm using Mozilla Firebird right now...beats the heck out of Internet Explorer. Pop-up stopping, much better security, shows fake URLs (goes to a different site than it says it does), and will stop things from installing themselves on your computer - which IE likes to simply ignore. Tab browsing (no need for seperate browsers, as you have different websites open in the same windows) and multiple home pages are a nice bonus was well.
Couldn't be happier with it. Best part is that it's free, too, and there's no installation.

Too bad Grey Ninja isn't here to give his usual Firebird preeching- I think we all agree it's a wonderful browser, though.
I personally use a combination of Opera and Firebird, and very rarely Explorer since my Quicktime plugins don't seem to like the latter two browsers.

What happened to Grey Ninja? I've noticed he hasn't posted in a while.

Well he said he was leaving, but he's said it so many times in the past to no avail...Guess he finally went through with it...Or he could just be taking a break...

Firebird and Internet Explorer. Firebird's better when it comes to graphic intensive pages for me (my video card has about the same power as a Frogger arcade machine), and it kinda loads things faster. I use IE when I need to view Java stuff (I've never been able to get it working in Firebird), and IE seems to handle Geocities pages and IGN better. Firebird freezes my PC for around 10 seconds whenever I click a link at IGN. O_o
Oh, <3 tabs, too.

Everyone who knows me here knows what I use
And why is mouse so sad that Grey Ninja left? Is there some genuine sadness, or is it some other reason?

I use firebird for most stuff, but still have to use IE for win update. (kind of ironic that windows update uses a known exploit in IE to be able to see all the files it needs to A) shred B) mess up your computer)
Anyway, off topic, but have any of you guys been having issues with the latest update (the one for january)? I can't even get past the scan for updates, it crashes and says there is something with my clock.

Might I add in a frozen state.
I use netscape and avoid IE altogeather as I se a Mac. I don't use Maxos X enough so there is no reason for me to use Safari or otherwise.

It's a bug...change your language in Internet Explorer to US English (Tools > Internet Options > General > Languages) and it should work fine.

*hugs oohhboy* Yay! I thought I was the only Mac user here. I no longer feel alone. Safari isn't that great though. I've been addicted to Firebird since I first downloaded it. And I changed the icon to the Cheat from the USS Homestar Runner dot com because in one of Strong Bad's emails, the cheat wanted to be code named, "Firebert". That cracked me up so now he's my Firebert...bird icon.

I use IE v.6.0. I've never had much problems with it, so I'm happy with it!

...you don't know what you're missing, Caliban. IE is garbage. It doesn't block pop-ups, it has annoying hangups, it's slower to load images, and it's much easier to hack. Ever get annoying crap like Gator, Hotbar, or other stuff installed on your computer without your permission? Firebird, Opera, and other browsers block that. Tab browsing is also great...there will never be a need for you to have more than one browser open at once.
I'd at least give Firebird a try. It's less than ten megs to download, and it's free. No installation as well.

Listen to SearanoX. He knows what he's talkin' bout. I seriously have not seen a pop up since I downloaded this sucka.

Actually, I've tried Firebird before and I didn't like the experience. Mostly because it would make me change the way I already manage myself, and I'm quite fine the way I work now. The tabs thingy doesn't impress me, because normally I work with only 2 pages at a time so there is no use for that feature, what I use alot is alt+tab. I also have no problems with pop-ups, the images load quite fast (I'm on DSL and my ISP is quite reliable). Well it's just my opinion none-the-less, and I know that Firebird is good but at the time I don't need it!

New version of Mozilla out. Version 6.1 or something. Haven't tried it yet. Comes with email client. Yay.
The only complaint I have with Firebird is that there's no "copy" function. =\

Caliban: While enjoyment is the most important factor in choosing a browser, be advised that Internet Explorer has little to no security at all, and you're open to a lot of spyware and hackers while using it. In fact, if you don't already have a spyware remover, I'd suggest getting one immediately and running it- you'll be amazed how much crap is on your computer.

Indeed - for spyware and adware, I recommend download Ad-aware and using the auto-updater with it. Then use a custom scan and select everything possible. The first time I did it on my oldest computer, it found over 100 items - all of them transmitting information on your computer to other companies, while at the same time hogging system resources.

I already got Spybot-Search & Destroy!

Excellent- if you're going to use IE, having a program like Spybot or Adaware is essential.

I would also recommend using a registry cleaning tool. While it doesn't actually do any real harm to your computer, it can do things like slow down boot and load times.
And it's good that you have a scanner like that. Microsoft should really have something like that (assuming they didn't have it ignore certain things), but they never would in a million years. It's not hard work for them, but in the end, they make money off of programs like that.
